Knit Picks Sock Yarn October 2019 Review

Knit Picks is a fantastic online store for knitters and crocheters, and it’s always been one of my favorite places to shop for yarn and tools! They launched a line of subscription boxes that feature different products from their in-house yarn and pattern lines.

A card is included in the box that details the contents of this month’s Sock Yarn Box. The description reads:

Discover the convenience (and fun!) of knitting with our Stroll Mini Packs! These color coordinated samplers feature 5 individual 20g hanks, making them perfect for both sock AND shawl patterns.

KnitPicks June 2019 card two

There was a second card in the box that goes into more detail on each of the different boxes available. MSA plans to review a different box type from Knit Picks each month, and we are leaving the choice up to you! Please let us know in the comments below which box type you’d like to see reviewed for November!

Now, onto the good stuff - the yarn!

KnitPicks Stroll Fingering Yarn in Navy - Retail Value $10.98 ($5.49 per skein, and currently on sale for $2.74 per skein)

Opening this box was such a wonderful experience - all I could see was a pile of bright yarn, and who isn't excited about that?! While the tools and notions are always great to receive in Knit Picks' boxes, I'm definitely excited about a yarn-heavy box this month.

The first yarn I pulled out were these two full-size skeins of Stroll fingering sock yarn in navy. Stroll is one of my absolute all-time favorite yarns, because it is oh-so-soft and comes in such an amazing variety of colors. This navy is such a classic, and could be used in anything from a pair of socks to a shawl to a baby sweater. Each skein contains 231 yards in 50 grams, which means we received a total of 462 yards with the two skeins. The yarn is 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% nylon.

Knit Picks Stroll Tonal Mini Pack in Radiant Reds - Retail Value $20.49 (currently on sale for $12.29)

I love the mini pack bonanza in this box! Each mini pack contains five separate skeins, each containing 20g of yarn. The pack as a whole contains 462 yards, which means that each mini skein contains around 92 yards each. I love gradient mini sets such as this set of reds and pinks best - I think it is so fun to use these in an ombre effect or faded in a project.

The yarn is also Stroll Fingering, which means it is the same fiber content as the skeins shown above - 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% nylon. The minis are just as soft as the full-sized skeins!

Knit Picks Stroll Tonal Mini Pack in Wildflowers - Retail Value $20.49 (currently on sale for $16.39)

The second mini skein set we received is in the bright "Wildflowers" colorways. The pink in this set is one of the same colors as included in the set above, and there is also a purple, blue, green, and yellow mini skein in this set. While these colors are lovely together, they scream springtime to me. I'm in such a cozy, fall state of mind right now that these colors aren't calling to me to knit them up right away. I'm being super picky here, but I would have loved to see Knit Picks include one of their autumnal or winter color sets in this box.

Phinney Ridge Sock Pattern - Retail Value $4.99

The first pattern included in the box is for a striped pair of socks. I think these are super cute, especially when paired with a gradient set like the Radiant Reds mini skeins that we received. I didn't love the pairing of the navy skeins with the pinks and reds of that set, however, otherwise I would have made these socks. I guess I'll have to order a couple more skeins of Stroll in a coordinating color soon so that I can cast these on!

Breakers Shawlette pattern - Retail Value $4.99

The second pattern included is for a striped shawlette. This is such a fun pattern, because you can complete the entire thing just with one mini skein set!

I decided to use my mini skein sets to make my absolute favorite mini skein project: baby socks! A 20g mini skein is the perfect amount of yarn to make a sweet pair of baby socks, and they are such a quick and easy project that I love making them. I know a lot of people expecting babies right now, so it's great to have a stash of quick gift knits at the ready for when those babies are born! The wildflower set especially reminded me of a great pastel baby palette.

Here are some photos of my in-progress sock! I found the yarn to be very soft and easy to work with while I was working on this project. I love the variation in the colors from light to dark and think it gives the finished product such a fun, handmade look.

Here's my finished sock! Isn't this adorable? I want to make a whole set in each of the colors of minis from this box!

Verdict: I thought this was a great Sock Yarn Box! I liked that we received enough yarn to knit both of the patterns included in the box, and that we received a lot of yarn compared to some previous boxes that I've gotten from Knit Picks. For $48.00, we received two full-size skeins of fingering weight yarn and two mini skein sets of fingering weight yarn (for a total of 400g of yarn!), as well as two printed patterns, for a total retail value of $61.94. Knit Picks advertises the boxes as having a $60 value, so this valuation is right on the mark. If you know you are a fan of Knit Picks products, or you want to try new yarn and knitting/crochet items at a discounted price, I think this box has a great value!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box will be the December 2019 box.

Value Breakdown: At $48.00, here’s approximately what you are paying for each item:

  • Knit Picks Stroll Yarn - $8.50 ($4.25 per skein)
  • Knit Picks Stroll Tonal Mini Packs - $31.76 ($15.87 per pack)
  • Sock Pattern - $3.87
  • Shawlette Pattern - $3.87

I love your baby sock! Is the pattern available on Ravelry? What a great way to use up leftover bits of sock yarn! So sweet…❤️

Thank you! Yes, the pattern is on Ravelry! It’s called the Perfect Newborn Socks from Hey Sister Yarn Company – and it’s a free pattern! The cabled version is super cute too, I’m going to make those next!
