Hikewize September 2019 Review

When you first sign up for a Hikewize subscription, you'll fill out a short preference survey with questions like gender, favorite color palette, sizing, and food allergies. I know first hand as a subscription addict that having preferences is a big deal and really appreciated so that I will actually use the items I receive.

I received a booklet full of info with my first box from Hikewize. It introduces us to Hikewize's mission, which is to get people outside and going on adventures! You'll also find descriptions of each item with their retail values, and tips for the trails (make sure to bring plenty of water!). They've also sent a pretty branded sticker featuring a mountain sunset- which I'll be putting onto my new Nalgene water bottle, ASAP.

Gobi Gear 30L Free Spirit Backpack - Retail Value $56.99

Right out of the gate, I'm impressed with the first item! The only backpack I had previously is heavy nylon and pretty small. I brought it to the last hike I went on but it made my back a little sweaty and wasn't really built for the outdoors. This backpack from Gobi Gear is made with super lightweight nylon and is water-resistant as well. It has a ton of little pockets and loops to stash things including two large side pockets that fit a water bottle perfectly, a small zipper pocket at the waist, and more. This thin pack also folds up into a small triangle so it's a great bag to pack on a trip! On the inside, there are lightweight nylon dividers with velcro and elastic to keep things organized. The shoulder straps have light padding and two chest straps to help distribute any weight I might be carrying in the pack. I also love that Hikewize used my preferences from when I signed up and sent me the pack in a black and grey colorway which I prefer.

Farm To Feet Lightweight Technical 3/4 Crew Sock: Appalacian Trail Collection, size small - Retail Value $23.00

Well, these have to be the world's most comfortable socks! They're nice n' warm without being too thick and are made with 100% merino wool right here in the U.S. I received the "Harpers Ferry" variation from their Appalachian Trail collection which has a design in a nice peach color on the back. They sent them in a size small which matches my size 6 size preference, which again I find helpful since some one-size socks are much too big on me. What I especially like in these socks is the cushioning and compression around the arch of my foot which makes them fit so snuggly and ultra-comfy. These will be fantastic when going for a longer hike in the chillier months that I prefer.

Buff Fastwick Headband - Retail Value $16.00

Next up, I got a wide fastwick headband from Buff. It's made of polyester and elastane knitted fabric that is light and wicks away moisture to keep my sweaty head cool. I am prone to overheating when doing any sort of activity, so I can appreciate an accessory like this one. Again, I'm happy to have it in black to match my goth-even-while-hiking aesthetic. The logo and design on the back are reflective for safety, but I am missing some sort of grip on the inside of this baby to keep it more securely on my head.

Nalgene 32 oz. Widemouth Bottle (with Easy Sipper) - Total Retail Value $14.95 ($11.54 + $3.41)

Another hiking essential when staying hydrated is a classic Nalgene water bottle. It's made with BPA-free plastic, comes with a wide mouth (so you can easily add ice), and has an attached cap that screws off. What I find especially handy is that Hikewize included an Easy Sipper accessory to drop onto the opening which means I won't spill my water all over my face when taking a huge gulp (it happens a lot to me...). I received a blue variation based on my color preferences and this baby holds 32 ounces of refreshing water!

Split Nutrition Pack x2 - Total Retail Value $4.98 ($2.49 each)

I was wondering why they asked for food allergy concerns when I signed up and now I know that it's because they send snacks as well. I showed up first on a recent group hike led by one of my friends who just became a park ranger and as our other friends slowly trickled in, hungover, I was quickly asked if I had brought any snacks. Luckily, I did and now know that having something like this little nutrition pack is super helpful. I received two flavors from Split which are gluten-free and contain a total of 5 grams (or 4, depending on the flavor) of protein from a divided pack of nut butter and berry spread. I busted into the peanut butter/blueberry version by folding the pack in half and ripping off the top. They suggest squeezing it onto toast, fruit, or even directly into your mouth (my preferred method). Not surprisingly, this gave me the perfect PB+J flavor. There were even fruit chunks in the blueberry spread. I'll be saving the almond butter/raspberry spread for later.

Clif Bar, 2.4 oz. x2 - Total Retail Value $3.58 ($1.79 each)

In addition to the Split packs, Hikewize has sent two Clif Bars as well in Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Raisin Walnut. I'm very familiar with these dense protein bars and often grab them before heading on a hike or camping trip. They fit well into one of the little pockets of my new backpack and will make a fantastic boost of needed energy before or during an adventure.

Verdict: I'm super pumped on my first Hikewize box! As a newbie hiker, they hooked me up with basic essentials that will get me out and onto the trails in one go. I love that I was able to set color preferences to get items I'll want to use and it's good to know that they try to cater to dietary needs as well with the snacks they send. I received nine items in this box that have a total retail value of $119.50 which I think is incredible for a $55.00 box. I can't wait to use my new gear since my favorite season is here and it's cool enough for me to get outdoors more without being miserable. The backpack and socks were my favorites this time and I'm excited to see what comes in box two!
