Beauteque Mask Maven September 2019 Review
The number of sheet masks out there for sale must be incredibly large. Mask Maven almost never sends repeat items, and I discover something new every month:
The box came with this information card. This month has a “Girls' Night In” theme. The themes used to bear little relationship to the masks, but I really feel like they’ve been stepping it up lately and that there’s a better connection. There were two masks from every product line featured so you could share with a friend if you wanted to.
Purederm Galaxy 3X Multi-Mask: Oily Skin - Retail Value $3
The part that goes in your t-zone was a bubble mask, the part that goes under your eyes is a wash-off mask, and the part that goes on your chin is a peel-off mask. The bubble part did actually bubble and the chin mask turned out to peel off pretty well -- not in one piece, but close. There was so much product in this that probably you could get by using half each time if you could manage to close off the bubble part (which seems to be activated when exposed to air). I am not sure what to make of the ingredients list because the ingredients for each part are obviously different but they are all crammed together on the product page. I do note there is a lot of bentonite, which is an absorbent clay that probably does help deal with excess oil.
Purederm Galaxy 3X Multi-Mask: Dry Skin - Retail Value $3
Even though one mask was for oily skin and one for dry, I used both. (My skin is actually combination so I guess that's OK?) The chin part seemed almost the same in each case. There's kaolin here but no bentonite, as far as I can tell (kaolin is a clay that I would expect to be similar to bentonite, but maybe there are some absorbance differences). The t-zone and under-eye parts were both wash-off masks; there was no bubble mask here. There are quite a few amino acids in this mask. I'm not sure how effective they are, applied to the skin. This one is supposed to help with skin elasticity but I don't think you can really tell after one use (OK, *I* couldn't tell after one use).
The Face Shop Real Nature Green Tea Mask - Retail Value $2.20
This one seems to have changed packaging and I note it also costs more than the other mask from this product line. Perhaps that has something to do with the price increase over the next item in the list? Green tea is an excellent source of antioxidants. Other than the green tea, this one didn't all that different compared to the one below.
The Face Shop Real Nature Cucumber Mask - Retail Value $1.99
I have always found cucumber to be soothing (as a skincare ingredient) so I was happy to see it here. This also has sodium hyaluronate, a polymer that holds on to water molecules near the surface of the skin, so it is moisturizing (but probably not vegan since the overwhelming majority of sodium hyaluronate used in industry is a byproduct of poultry processing). This also has allantoin to soothe rough skin and some other standard moisturizing ingredients.
Sally's Box Loverecipe Carrot Mask - Retail Value $2
I don't honestly remember if I've seen this brand before or not. Carrot is full of vitamin A and other antioxidants and as a root vegetable, it also has compounds that hold on to a lot of moisture. This also has grapefruit extract so it is most likely rich in vitamin C as well. Although I'd never recommended going out without sunscreen, I would think this one would be especially good if your skin is irritated after a long day in the sun (and the vitamins would help fight free radical damage from sun exposure).
Sally's Box Loverecipe Peach Mask - Retail Value $2
This one was pretty similar to the one above although I think this one had a slight peach scent, while I didn't notice a scent from the other one. It may not have quite as much vitamin A but it may very well have a little. This is supposed to make the skin softer and I think it helped with that. Peach extract may also have a little more sugar than carrot extract; carbohydrates tend to hold on to water and may also be moisturizing for that reason.
Renardeau Core Essence Centella Asiatica Mask - Retail Value $1.50
This has Centella asiatica, which is also known as gotu kola and by several other names. It is a popular ingredient in K-beauty preparations. I guess it's good this is inexpensive because the product page recommends it be used twice daily! (I don't have time for that...) Centella is supposed to boost antioxidant activity at the site of wounds, which should promote healing. I thought this one and the one below were pretty similar, to be honest.
Renardeau Core Essence Baobab Mask - Retail Value $1.50
This was a new brand for me. Baobab is an African tree and its extracts are full of vitamin C. This did not have a noticeable scent. I would recommend this one based on cost alone, especially if you are looking for something with vitamin C. This did not interfere with putting on makeup later and it didn't drip all over my shirt, which is two more points in its favor.
Purederm Avocado Collagen Mask - Retail Value $2.90 (found here for $2.32)
Collagen is a big protein and probably can't pass the skin barrier. However, it should hold on to moisture near the surface of the skin and that may help diminish the look of fine lines. This also has avocado, which has lots of lovely moisturizing oils. This also contains witch hazel, which is used in a lot of toners, and green tea leaf extract, which is full of antioxidants. This one is just a good general-purpose mask, though it is on the pricier side for this subscription.
Purederm Coconut Collagen Mask - Retail Value $2.90 (found here for $2.32)
This one is pretty similar to the avocado one, although with a coconut-type scent (not too heavy or cloying). Coconut oil is pretty moisturizing. It doesn't always get along with my skin, which is already oily, but the coconut here was at a low enough level that I managed! Other ingredients are pretty similar to those listed for the other mask from this product line.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $22.99 for the September 2019 Beauteque Mask Maven. A lot of the masks were inexpensive this month, but there was an extra one, which kind of makes up for that. I thought to get multiple masks from each product line was great - I used them all, but if you are so inclined, you can share them as well. I think my favorite was the peach one and the 3X masks were fun to try as well although not as different as you might expect, based on the distinction between "dry" and "oily."
