Sweet Sparkle August 2019 Review

Each month Sweet Sparkle includes an info card with an intro to the theme, products sampled, and their retail values. This month’s theme is “Gleam and Beam” featuring 5 makeup products.

Starlooks Luxe Longwear Gem Eye Pencil in Brown - Retail Value $19

I am not sure where Starlooks came up with the name Gem eye pencil since this has a matte finish, but this eyeliner glided on smoothly and stayed put all day long. I'll always prefer a mechanical liner compared to the pencils that always seem to need sharpening, so this was a good fit for me. I don't think I'd pay $19 for this pencil, but I'll use it now that I have it.

Sorme Natural Blotting Paper - Retail Value $7.50

Here is an item that you don't often see in subscription boxes, yet tend to be useful! This little box has 100 oil-absorbing sheets which will last me an eternity. I rarely use blotting sheets since I have dry skin, but I find them handy when I am wearing sunscreen that tends to make my T-zone shiny. Natural green tea extracts protect your skin while tea tree extracts heal and soothe skin. These sheets absorb just as well as any other blotters I've tried, leaving me with a fresher feeling and less shiny face.

Cailyn Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in Apple Pink - Listed Value $19

This tinted balm provides a sheer layer of moisture as well as a natural tint to the lips. Typically I am not someone who loves products in a jar, but this lippie has a built-in brush to apply the product with, so no need to dip your finger in the product to apply. Regardless, I find this packaging to be too bulky to carry with me and this product's retail value is definitely overpriced. The color is a neutral peach, swatched below.

e.l.f. Cosmetics Lip Liner and Blending Brush in Natural - Retail Value $3

I always love trying e.l.f. products! This lip liner matches perfectly with the Cailyn balm above, which helped create a cohesive, neutral lip look. This liner went on smoothly and felt comfortable over my lip balm. I lined my lips and blended the product out with the brush at the other end, then applied the balm all over. They matched seamlessly and my lip color lasted all afternoon.

LA Girl PRO Conceal HD Highlighter - Retail Value $4.99

I am not very familiar with LA Girl's products, but the price is definitely right! Some of my very favorite highlighters are liquid formulas, but this frosty white version is a little too intense for me. I was able to make it wearable by applying it very sparingly and just tapping it onto the skin, but I wasn't wowed by the effect. I wouldn't mind trying this formula in one of their many corrector or concealer shades, though!

Swatches of the makeup (left to right): LA Girl PRO Conceal Highlighter, Cailyn Lip Tint in Apple Pink, e.l.f. Lip Liner in Natural, Starlooks Eyeliner in Brown

Here is the look I came up with using all of the products from this month’s box; not much of a look to show off! I went for a natural look using the basics sent out this month like the lipliner, tinted balm, brown eyeliner and highlighter.

Verdict: Sweet Sparkle sent out another very basic box this month. I didn't find any of the products particularly exciting, even though I will use a few of them again. If you love neutral colors and looks, then this month's box would be perfect for you! This month’s retail value came to $53.50, which I think is okay for a $24.50 box; I just would have liked to see something more colorful or newer this time around.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Your first box will be the current month’s box. So if you sign up in the month of September, you will get the September box, etc.

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.

I think this box was missing a hero item, like a eyeshadow palette.

Aw, the theme “gleam & beam” sounded really cute, but darn the products are almost the opposite of that, especially a matte eyeliner & blotting papers!

I know LA Girl concealers are a cult fave, & I’ve been wanting to try the flat white for a while.

I love the LA Girl color correctors for my undereyes. They are really good at covering up my dark circles, definitely a find for $5, that’s for sure!

For the price; this box is consistently not with it.

I agree. That’s quite a few really cheap brand items. I pay less for Boxycharm and get much better items and brands. I pay the same for Ipsy Plus and it’s much better also. This box will never be on my radar.
