Gobble "From the Range" September 2019 Review

Meal #1: Sirloin Steak with Smashed Yukon Potatoes & Three Peppercorn Sauce

Gobble’s main selling point is that they do the prep work for you so that you can get a nutritious, semi-homemade dinner on the table in 15 minutes. This means many parts of all these meals are pre-done for us (marinated meats, partially prepped potatoes, pre-caramelized onions, etc).

The potatoes were already roasted so all I had to do was press to smash them, and fry them up until crispy.

While the potatoes cooked, I seared the steaks, washed and added the mushrooms, and also added the already caramelized onions. Then, I put the pan in the oven and let it cook more.

The last step was to sauté up some spinach, plate the meal, and add the three peppercorn sauce and onions over the steaks. We loved this meal. It was so flavorful and the steak was cooked to exactly how I like it. I loved how quick it was to put together - the process was really as simple as just crisping the potatoes, searing and roasting the steaks, and tossing in the vegetables.

Meal #2: Thai Red Curry with Beef & Brown Rice

This recipe was fantastic. And, honestly, my favorite part about this meal was that I learned how easy it could be to make a delicious red curry with steak again on my own in the future. This meal was very quick to toss together.

The first thing I did was slice and prep the vegetables. This was the longest part of this quick meal. The package of flat iron steak was already sliced for me so all it needed was to be tossed in a hot pan and seared.

Next, I added the vegetables and let them cook for a couple minutes, and then add the pre-mixed red curry sauce.

The coconut brown rice was already cooked and I just microwaved it, with a little water, to get it ready.

I loved this meal! The flavor was well balanced and the vegetables were very fresh. Some pieces of the meat seemed a little fatty or chewy, but most of it was just right. Bonus: It was really a one-pot meal (except for the bowl to warm the rice) so clean up was minimal.

Meal #3: Salisbury Wagyu Beef with Sweet Potato Puree and Onion Gravy

The first step is to mix together the beef, steak seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and whipped eggs and form four patties.

Then I cooked them for three minutes per side, and drained the excess fat.

Next I just added the pre-caramelized onions and the demi-glace to the pan with the beef, covered it, and let it cook for another 4 minutes.

While the beef cooked I simply cut up the carrots and cooked them in a pan with the peas.

The last step was to place the pre-mashed sweet potatoes in a bowl and microwave them to warm them up.

This meal was delicious. I loved all the flavors! I'd never had Wagyu beef before. I will say, though, that the sweet potatoes tasted pretty much like just normal potatoes, but with the demi-glace sauce mixed in it was still really good.

Now for the side add-ons!

Okay, I first have to tell you that I was a little confused when I opened my box and found the add-on-able sides. There was a recipe card for the Macaroni & Cheese, and then there was some kind of garlic bread and a container of soup that weren't referenced on any of the other meal cards - so I assumed they went with the Macaroni as a fourth meal. After clarifying with Gobble, what really happened was that they sent 3 add-on sides and they just happened to go together well enough to make a sort of fourth meal together. However, they also said they're an easy way to build up the 3 actual meals and help stretch them to feed more than just two people. Now that that's clarified - let me show you the rest of the box!

Black Truffle Macaroni & Cheese - Add-On Price $8.49

This macaroni and cheese was easy to make and tastes great. After boiling the noodles and combining the ingredients for the sauce in the sauté pan, you toss in the noodles and top with bread crumbs! Pop it in the oven to broil & brown on top. It was cheesy, creamy, crispy, and had a nice complex flavor from the black truffle.

Tomato Bisque - Add-On Price $5.99

Tomato bisque soup is a classic, and one of my favorite soups in general. This soup was already made and all it required to prepare for serving was to warm it up! I was happy with the flavor, too. It didn't taste like a canned or store-bought soup or anything.

Garlic Parmesan Bread

This bread was so quick to toss together that I realized after the fact that I didn't take any process photos! The bread was pre-cut so all I did was butter it with a garlic parmesan butter and topped it with cheese and baked!

Do you see what I mean about how the three add-on sides all went together really well?

Verdict: All things considered, I really enjoyed my first Gobble dinner kit! I've tried a couple meal kits before to try and simplify dinnertime and while it helped a little, there was still a lot of prep and time involved. Gobble really does everything they can to make their meals ready in about 15-20 minutes and with as few pans to dirty as possible. I thought the flavor and quality of each meal were good! They were different than what I normally grab for a quick dinner and I liked learning how easy it could be to make some of them again on my own in the future. Once I realized that the add-ons were add-on sides and not a fourth meal, I realized they could be a good way to add something to either stretch the meals to feed more than just 2 people, or maybe things like the soup or macaroni would be something your kids would enjoy if they may be dubious of some of the meal components. Considering the convenience, quality, and flavor of everything in our box, I think the $71.70 box cost to be fair, at least as a nice help once a month or something.

I’ve tried so many & do think blogs have incentives to be positive. Gobble has sent me kits missing ingredients & nearly every kit requires some microwaving (not healthy). Also, all meals come in plastic bags with just enough ingredients for that recipe. Truth is, for 12$ per meal you can do better & healthier. My absolute fav is hungry root service. They actually send you recipes but all the ingredients are healthy & are actual groceries. The rice is a box of rice – the meatballs are a pack of meatballs – the guacamole is a container of guacamole etc. so you can follow their recipes or play around & still have food left over. I like having actual groceries. Plus , they cater to all diets & recipes are super fast & No microwaving. They also come in at around 8$ a serving. Win win

Just sub’d thank you for the review! I too have tried all of the kits out there and ended up pausing too much due to time constraints. I like the simplicity of this and how they list out the possible allergens as my husband has an intolerance for gluten so we try to avoid too much wheat. Looking forward to the meals and I did add on a breakfast for myself 🙂

I am going to give Gobble a try. I’ve tried all of the other services – Plates, Blue Apron, Home Chef – and you’re right, they all require way more prep work than I want to be doing.

This seems promising! Thanks for the review!
