This box always comes with an amazing instruction manual with easy to follow instructions. I love that each instruction has a picture – it is really hard to mess up any project thanks to the detailed instructions and pictures. This month, I was pretty stoked to try and make my own woven baskets. The next items in my box are the supplies needed to complete this project.

Doodle Crate Handwoven Baskets August 2019 - Set out the Crafts Top

This project I did on my own but I did save the other two baskets for Bella to complete. I set out the supplies for my project.

Doodle Crate Handwoven Baskets August 2019 - Stretch out the T-shirt Yarn Top

The first step was to stretch out the T-shirt yarn. At first, I didn’t understand why because the material would curl up, but that was what we wanted per the instructions. I pulled the material as I unwound it from the cardboard piece.

When I was done, it looked like a big pile of fabric spaghetti.

I chose a color I thought Bella would like least: yellow. I took it to the kitchen and filled up the bottle with warm water.

Then I took my fabric and also ran it under warm water. I made sure when I strained the water out to get out as much as possible.

I poured my yellow mixture into my cup and started to feed my material inside. I pushed it down with the craft stick to make sure it all stayed under the color.

Once it was all inside, I had to let it sit for 20 minutes. I kept it in the sink because things tend to spill when the cat is around and went to the living room to start season 2 of Working Moms.

Doodle Crate Handwoven Baskets August 2019 - Dry Yellow Fabric on Paper Towels Top

As soon as my 20 minutes (and first episode) was over, I went to the kitchen to check out the fabric. I rinsed it out under warm water and strained it so that all the extra water was out. I carefully laid my now yellow fabric on paper towels and let it dry overnight.

Doodle Crate Handwoven Baskets August 2019 - Weaving Dry Yellow Fabric Front

I knew I wanted to make the pencil/pen holder so that was the frame I grabbed. I taped one end at the bottom and started weaving. It was pretty simple: first, I started by weaving it on the inside, then the out then worked my way to the top of the frame.

When I got to the top, I wrapped the fabric around and clipped it with the clothespins.

Then I took the end of the fabric and threaded it through the needle. I then took the needle and weaved it around the top. At this point I was done and just had to un-tape the end from the bottom of the frame and tuck it under the woven rows on the bottom. It is perfect for my desk!

Verdict: Doodle Crate is not just a box that my daughter enjoys, but one I really enjoy too, obviously since I decided to this one solo. The projects are so neat and genuinely fun for those with an artistic flair. These kits are great for bonding with my kids, fun when she has friends over and fun for me too. Doodle Crate sends enough materials to do more than one project, so I am able to get away with doing my own craft and still can leave a lot for Bella to do too. For $19.95 this box is well worth the value. It teaches us new crafts that are fun and pretty simple to do.
