Slay Glam Box August 2019 Review

Slay Glam sends an info card each month with an itemized list of what’s in your box, including retail values.

If you follow @slayglambox on Instagram, the box curator enables subscribers to choose certain items each month by DMing or commenting your item choice; I love this feature! This month I was able to customize which color lipstick and eyeliner pen I received.

Rasha B. Cosmetics Matte Liquid Lipstick in Slay - Retail Value $24

Rasha B.'s lip products smell so good! I was able to choose the color of lipstick I wanted this month, and it only seemed right to choose the color Slay. This dusty pink applied boldly in one swipe, and I was able to use just the doe-foot applicator to perfectly shape out my lips. This color felt comfortable on my lips for about an hour or so without feeling super dry or bleeding (not an issue I typically have, anyway), and I was able to touch up with a lip gloss without having to remove any color.

Manna Kadar Blush in Paradise - Listed Value $21

The subscription box champ, Manna Kadar, in yet another box! I've seen this brand across the scope of many different sub boxes, and I've never been wowed by any of their products. This is your typical flushed cheek pink, strongly pigmented with just a hint of shimmer. The packaging of this blush is just awful; I've reached for it a few times since I've had it, and trying to get it open is such a hassle that I am definitely passing this on to one of my more patient friends, haha!

Chella Eyeliner Pen in Purple - Retail Value $21

Here is another product I was able to choose this month; I love the color of this inky purple liner. If you are someone who is stuck on black eyeliner but is tempted to ease your way into using more color, this would be the perfect stepping stone! This liner glides on easily and seems to stay put throughout the day without any running or transferring. I've grown pretty lazy in my beauty routine, but recently, this easy-to-use pen has inspired me to go the extra mile in the AM.

Swatches top to bottom: Manna Kadar Blush in Paradise, Rasha B. Liquid Lip in Slay, Chella Eyeliner in Purple

Amorus USA Bubble Pop Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $15

I am typically one who prefers quality to quantity, but I was thrilled to see this sea of color in this month's box. There are several different finishes tucked into this giant palette, and a lot of them swatched very nicely! There are two beautiful foiled shades that felt like a luxury brand's formula, but there are also mattes that require a little more effort to build up any pigmentation.

Amorus USA Bubble Pop Eyeshadow Palette swatched left to right, top to bottom.

There are a few pressed glitter shades in this palette that I swatched without using any glitter glue; I was impressed by how they swatched and stayed on my arm! All in all, I think the quality of this palette is okay if you're looking for a pop of color, but it isn't a palette I'd reach for daily.

Gourmande Girls 3D Fiberlash Mascara - Retail Value $23.99

Gourmande's 3D Fiberlash Mascara is infused with vitamin E to nourish lashes, and it also contains green tea micro fibers to lengthen. This mascara promises to give you "longer, thicker lashes that look natural" so it was probably never meant to be loved by yours truly; I just haven't had any luck with mascaras recently! I am really picky when it comes to my lashes because I love volume, length and separation, and there are few formulas that can deliver. This mascara is one of the worst I've ever tried! It is a sticky formula, and by the time I was working on a second coat, I had it all over my lids and streaked under my eyes. Warning: extreme close-up below!

Here is the look I created using all the makeup products from this month’s Slay Glam Box.  The pale green and pale yellow eyeshadows were calling to me, and I also used the emerald shade to line my eyes. I had to touch up a lot of my eyeshadow, thanks to the Gourmande Girls mascara, so to try to blend it all back together I pressed a little of the blue sparkle from the palette on top of the eyeshadow look. I am also wearing the Rasha B. lipstick in this photo.

Extreme close up! Here is the mascara/eye look, up close and personal. I made a horrible mess of the mascara! It was all over my eyes, and I don't really know how or why! It wasn't building for me, and the curl I stamped onto my lashes completely wilted under this heavy formula. This photo was taken after I cleaned up the unwanted mascara from my face.

Verdict:  Slay Glam Box had a great array of makeup products this month. I love the colors featured this month in the palette, liner and lipstick, even though the mascara was a total wash for me. This box has a retail value of $104.99 - all for under $25! I think it is a good box for anyone who likes to try products from brands that can often be overlooked or anyone who is looking to build up their makeup arsenal.

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.

I would be wary of this company, I ordered in August and never got my box , tracking says it was lost , contacted for replacement or refund in September and still waiting. Very poor customer service 😒

The packaging is cute! Sadly I wish I didn’t compare this to the bigger subscription box companies but it’s impossible. Seeing MK in the line up really kills it for me too. The Instagram DM option is a nice idea though.

What a mess! You are beautiful and obviously did your best with what they gave you but wow. Those swatches are awful-the formula not your swatches-and look like a chalky smeary mess! I do love the MK blush though. I got it in another box and love it. The packaging is a pain though.

Anyone else think this looks like Lola beauty box with a new name?

Reply ButtonReply

Nanci

No I don’t think so but definitely the same type of overpriced low quality makeup that Lola had.

Nanci

No but definitely the same type of overpriced junky makeup that Lola used to send.

Looks like makeup that is comparable to Dollar Store

Msa please release my comment on eye safe glitters.

Drminniecooper

If you read the ingredients list of the eyeshadow, it refers to the glitters as “face glitter”, which is the sneaky way that cosmetics companies are getting around the fact that their glitters are not eye safe and could lead to injury. Just probably worth noting since this has become a common trend lately.

They do this with intense pigment colors too. They say eyeshadow palette with a warning not to use on or near eyes lol

Jo

Colour pop does that.

Drminniecooper

I think the pressed pigment warning is because it stains your skin so they can’t call it eyeshadow, but the issue with non eye safe glitter is possible damage and infection to eye tissue if the glitter gets in there.

I think this sub has lots of work to do if they want to compete with Ipsy, Boxycharm, Glossy, etc….Thank you for reviewing this though. 🙂
