July 2019 Birchbox 'Ingredient Conscious' Curated Box #1 Review

back of info card info card with product list

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them.

Finally, included is a card with a 20% discount code to use on any Birchbox Kit or Limited Edition Kit in the shop.

Let's dive into our items!

DERMA E Overnight Peel with AHAs, 0.25 oz - Estimated Value $2.34 (Buy 2 oz for $18.75)

I have tried this peel before and it is a good choice if you are looking for an affordable AHA overnight formula. The acids are very effective at exfoliating your skin while you sleep, though I find a good moisturizer especially important with any AHA product, as well as sunscreen since your face can be sensitive!

Beautaniq Beauty Blush Serum in 'Sunset', 0.35 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $16.00

I have such mixed feelings about this product. It is more like a cream than I expected from the "serum" description and it is really easy to use too much. The coral color is beautiful, but made me look more sunburned than blushing, and it was very difficult to use without disturbing the texture of my BB cream underneath. Maybe my skin is too cool for this shade? I thought I would try it as a lip gloss (since sometimes these two products are multiuse) and it looked like it had a weird chalky base on my lips.

W3LL PEOPLE Bio Bronzer Loose Powder – Buy a full-size 0.32 oz for $21.99

This sample-sized product was another dud for me. I found the loose powder really messy and orange on my face, though I will say it was quite sheer. It settled into my larger pores and just made me look grimy.

Lavanila Pure Vanilla Eau de Parfum, 0.04 oz - Estimated Value $1.13 (Buy 1.7 oz for $48.00)

Yay! Perfume! This vanilla scent smells like sugar and soap, with a little booze in there too (as all good vanillas should have, IMHO!). This is the same scent as this incredibly popular Lavanila Deodorant and though I prefer something a little more complex, it was a sweet and cheerful scent that I did like very much.

Beautycounter Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, 1 fl oz - Estimated Value $7.35 (Buy a full-size 3.4 oz for $25.00)

Next, we have a staple of all summer boxes: SPF. This formula absorbed just fine and smelled clean. It might be a little heavy for someone with an oilier face, but my skin was fine. Interestingly enough, it didn't specify on the box if this is for face or body.

Davines SU Hair & Body Wash, 2.5 oz - Estimated Value $7.40 (Buy a full size 8.45 oz for $24.00)

Our last product is described as an aftersun shampoo and body wash, which I thought was interesting. I have never used a specific shampoo or wash after getting sun. I absolutely love the scent, a mix of sugar, citrus, and fresh air. It made my skin feel really clean and soft, and was fine as a shampoo. I can't speak to its burn calming powers because I have yet to burn this year (YES!).

Verdict: This box has an approximate value of $34.22, without the W3LL People bronzer that I couldn't figure out an estimate for. That is a little lower than my normal Birchbox value, especially since I didn't really like the $16 full-size item. The perfume and Davines wash were by far the highlights for me, but I feel like this Birchbox wasn't my favorite assortment.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

The Beautycounter sunscreen is for face or body. And while it has consultants and uses a direct sales model, you can also shop from them directly, without using a consultant. They also have 2 physical shops, as well as pop ups. Target also partnered with them about 2 years ago.

Beautycounter is a MLM brand. I’m disappointed to see Birchbox partnering with them.

I actually have that blush on today! I have no idea which box I got it from but I’ve had it probably a year so it lasts forever. I love it but it is definitely way too easy to get too much. I feel like I’m wasting a bunch every time I use it but like I said it lasts forever either way. I have medium skin tone so it works well for me. I tap it on to my cheeks and then use a beauty blender to tap & blend it in better.

I am also wearing this blush today- except mine is the Sunrise color, which is more of a bubblegum pink! I use the little mini Beauty Blender (for blush!) to apply it. It is easy to do too much, but I can usually blend it out. I have very pale skin, but I think this looks like a very natural blush on my skin. I really love it and honestly didn’t expect to when I received it. The sample I received is a pretty tiny tube, but you need so little that I can’t imagine running out anytime soon.
