Be Kind by Ellen Summer 2019 Review

This box comes with a large fold-out card and a note from Ellen. It also gives details of all of the items included this month.

Now, on to the items!

Drunk Elephant The Littles Set - Retail Value $90.00

Woo! I have been wanting to try this brand but I haven't pulled the trigger, mainly because they are pricy! This kit contains a month's worth of product so you can try 8 of their most popular formulas for yourself. So often I get samples of higher-end skincare that only allow me to try it out for a few days, so 30 days feels like a real treat! All arrived packaged into a cheerful blue zip pouch.

Here is what's inside:

  • 1 oz Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser - An innovative jelly cleanser that removes all traces of makeup, excess oil, pollution and any other grime from the day.
  • 0.27 oz C-Firma Day Serum - A revolutionary vitamin C serum packed with a powerful antioxidant complex of l-ascorbic and ferulic acids to reveal a brighter, firmer and more even-looking complexion.
  • 0.27 oz B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum - Like a cool drink of water for your thirsty skin, this ultra-hydrating serum replenishes the complexion and improves the look of skin texture and tone.
  • 0.27 oz T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum - A high-tech AHA/BHA gel that resurfaces dull, congested skin by gently lifting away dead skin cells.
  • 0.27 oz Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil - Rich in critical antioxidants and omegas 6 and 9, this Marula nourishes and balances while restoring a youthful glow.
  • 0.16 oz C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream - A rich and restorative eye cream featuring a brightening combination of eight peptides, five forms of vitamin C, and cucumber extract for firmer, stronger-looking skin around the eye area.
  • 0.5 oz Umbra Tinte Physical Defense SPF 30 - This tinted, physical sunscreen delivers UVA/UVB protection and is loaded with potent antioxidants to minimize the appearance of photoaging for a more youthful-looking complexion.
  • 0.5 oz Protini Polypeptide Cream - This breakthrough protein moisturizer combines an unprecedented array and concentration of signal peptides, growth factors, amino acids and pygmy waterlily for visible and immediate improvement in the appearance of skin’s tone, texture, and firmness.

Look at how cute! So even as a skincare addict, I was kind of stumped at where to begin. There is a ton of variety in this pouch! Luckily, the Drunk Elephant site has a ton of helpful info, including a suggested routine, especially for this kit. I followed this to the letter for 4 days, forsaking all of my other favorite products.

Morning: C-Firma mixed with B-Hydra. Followed by C-Tango Eye Cream. The eye cream didn't sit very well on top of the other products and did have some dreaded pilling issues. I recommend moving it to your night rotation or using solo. The first two products played very well together and left my face a little shiny, but after a thin layer of the Umbra Tinte, a little powder fixed that pretty quickly. The Umbra Tinte is a little darker than I need, but it was so sheer that I wore it anyway.

Evening: Cleansed with Beste Jelly Cleanser. Nothing super remarkable here, but it is a solid cleanser. A little goes a long way! Followed up with a mixture of Framboos Night Serum and Marula Oil. (I loved this oil!). Finally, A thin cover of the Protini Cream.

My thoughts? This is a SOLID routine. Between all of these formulas, your skin gets a ton of high-quality ingredients. My skin looked beaming just after 4 days. I wish I liked this kit less, because now I am really tempted to buy another one when this one runs out. $90/month for a well-rounded, high-quality skincare routine might be more affordable and make more sense for some people than buying full sizes over time. I am really thrilled with this kit.

Also included was a highly informative booklet with even more info on each and every sample.

Reusable Straw Kit - Listed Value $12.00

More straws! Reusable straws have been one of the subscription box darlings of 2019! I am still really excited about them. I have them stashed all over my life, from my car, to my kitchen, office desk, everywhere I might need a straw. In the US alone, we go through 500 million straws in a single day! Are there bigger environmental issues? Certainly! But a reusable straw is something simple, stylish, and easy! This set of 4 is especially pretty, with two coated in a multicolored finish and the other two are a coppery tone. There are also 2 straight straws and 2 curved. Worried about keeping them clean? Included is a handy brush.

30 Days To Happiness: Daily Meditations and Actions for Finding True Joy Within Yourself by Rhonda Sciortino - Retail Value $12.50 (found on sale for $11.08)

I don't love books like this and I am generally self-help-book-phobic, but I can't deny that this sort of thing totally fits inside an Ellen box. Cheerful and positive, this is a short and very easy read, focused on the power of positive daily meditations.

Vunder Tahiti Candle Holder - Retail Value $21.00

This is kind of cool. It is a votive holder with a waterproof sealed bottom, so you can fill it with anything you want, then let the gentle light of a votive shine through. Of course, I filled mine with crystals! I have tons in my office and thought there was nothing prettier I could choose. The effect was actually very pretty and I like this piece a lot more than I thought I would.

Lovely! As a side note, if you are also a crystal addict, you should 100% check out the Enchanted Crystal box. Most of these pretties are from that subscription. 🙂

At this point, the rest of the contents of the box are more promo-code based, which can be a huge value or none at all depending on your preferences.

Boxed Water Sample and $20 Promo Card - Listed Value $20.00+

Along with the reusable straws from earlier, this is a product that is focused on reducing plastic waste. Boxed Water is packaged in paper, and its square shape makes it utterly stackable, something my pantry appreciates. Fun Fact: every time anyone posts an image of a Boxed Water and use the #BETTERPLANET they plant a tree!

Spotify Premium, 60 Days for Free - Listed Value $19.98

Who doesn't love commercial-free tuneage? This promo card gifts you two months of the Spotify Premium service. It is worth noting that if you have tried a Premium trial before, you are ineligible.

Aaptiv, 2 Months of Unlimited Workouts - Listed Value $30.00

I have tried this app before and really enjoyed it. Basically, it is a service with tons of audio workouts (over 2500!) led by world-class trainers and paired with music to get you moving. I used this while running, something I despise and am terrible at. The trainer guidance and cues did help me make the best of my short run. Not a runner? They have tons of different workouts to choose from, everything from elliptical routines to weights and yoga. At $14.99 a month after the trial, it could certainly be an economical alternative to a traditional gym membership.

Verdict: This box is likely going to be a little polarizing because so many of the "items" are promo codes. If you love skincare, you probably enjoyed this box. If you don't, you might be less enthused about the overall value. I personally liked all the items, even the ones offered in promo code form, mainly because I was already either using or have tried both services before and had a positive experience. As someone who really doesn't care that much about candle holders, I was surprised at how much I liked the one in this box. Filling it with crystals was just really enjoyable! I am always down for more fancy, reusable straws and metal is my favorite straw material. The book is a little lost on me, but is very "Ellen". The overall value of this box lands somewhere around $205.48, which is great for a $54.99 box, with about $135.50 of that being in physical goods that actually arrive inside the box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  Yes! This box is still available.

ACTIVE DEAL: Only for Quarterly & One-Time Purchases
CODE: MSA25

Value Breakdown: This box cost $54.99. Here is approximately what you are paying per product:

  • Drunk Elephant Littles Kit $24.09
  • Reusable Straws Kit $3.21
  • 30 Days to Happiness Book $3.35
  • Vunder Candle Holder $5.62
  • Boxed Water Promo $5.35

For everyone there is an unboxing for the new box on you tube

Reply ButtonReply

Sonia

Kate, mine is arriving on Thursday! Please update us with the contents as soon as you receive it!!!!

Reply ButtonReply

Michele

I still haven’t received a confirmation of shipping. I don’t want to cancel before I receive the box in case that were to make it more difficult to complain. But I will surely cancel after.

Reply ButtonReply

Sarah

No shipping notice. No spoilers. No response from customer service.

If, by some miracle, I actually get the Fall box I paid for, it will be my last from them.

I get sub boxes to add a little fun in my life not more stress.

Yay! I see on Fedex that I have a shipment from be kind by Ellen. They’ve created the shipping label which is why it’s showing on Fedex, but I have not received an email from Be Kind saying it’s shipping. Spoilers would be nice but at this point I’m up for a surprise. I’m curious about what the “custom item from Ellen just for me” is from their email a few weeks ago. I assume it’s an Ellen branded product. Once this box actually ships, I should have it in hand within 7-10 business days. Thanks for the updates from everyone else on here.

Reply ButtonReply

Kate N.

What???? A shipping notice???? One month after being billed? Well, will miracles never cease…

Of course, it hasn’t actually shipped yet….and, I’m sure it’s coming Smart Post, so it will be another 2 weeks, but still….

Ugh…

Reply ButtonReply

Sonia

Got one too! No spoilers……scary! I am guessing the gummies she has been advertising will be in the box.

Reply ButtonReply

nancyisshopping

Oh no, I did not get a shipping notice yet. 🙁

I wonder how many other people have received their notice.

Reply ButtonReply

Carol Pickersgill

I’ve not received anything yet. No response from Customer Service to over half dozen requests for info. No shipping notification. And… the promised spoilers / updates on social media have also not yet occurred.

Danielle

I live in Fl as well, and also have a package coming that I believe is the Ellen Box. Really not sure though.

Reply ButtonReply

Kate N.

I received an email from the Ellen Shop asking me to how I liked my recent purchase, and to please review the Fall Box. Boy, did I review it. 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Courtnnn

I didn’t get this email. Also, I can’t even log in to their site. I paid Sept 9. Almost a full month ago. And if they’d just show some spoilers or communicate honestly with everyone, I think most people would be a little more patient and a little less skeptical.

Reply ButtonReply

Holly Newman

Hahaha!!! Did you say, gee, I haven’t received it… nor has anyone else?

Reply ButtonReply

In early August, I received a promo email of BOGO summer box. I signed up right away, but didn’t have a chance to redeem the coupon code as I went away on long vacation. I tried to redeem the code and it was sold out. I reached out to the customer service and they said the code was only valid for 72 hours, but nowhere it was indicated in the initial promo email nor the email with free box code. I finally received my free box today after going back and forth with the customer service who responded about a week later to my email each time. I wasn’t in a hurry to use/gift any of the products, but I wish customer service response was quicker. I just wanted to share my experience with customer service.

I got an email stating that it is going to become part of their standard operating procedure to process payments a month in advance. With no spoilers and paying a month in advance that’s going to have to be a no-go for me, this will be my last box I imagine.

Reply ButtonReply

Sonia

Actually I subscribe to Box of Style and PSMH. I live in Florida. For the first one I always get charged 4 to 6 weeks before I get the box. PSMH has me waiting at least 3 weeks. So , for me there is no big difference. I received FedEx notification fora package arriving Tuesday. I believe is Ellen’s box since I already received my other subscription boxes. Has anyone else received a notification?

he Fall Box will be headed your way in early October! We heard from lots of you that you wanted more time to update your account information before the box ships. So, starting with this box, and, going forward,

you will be billed quarterly a month before the seasonal box ships. We will always alert you before the charge hits your credit card and allow you enough time to update your shipping, billing, and credit card information before the box makes its way to you.

You’ve secured your Fall Box already, so you’re good to go!

Ellen is SUPER excited about her Fall Box and even designed a few CUSTOM items just for YOU!

Reply ButtonReply

Talya

I still have not gotten that email, but I think it is going to be a no go for a lot of people. It’s absurd…I have never heard of a company charging you a month before they deliver a product (unless you are custom ordering something).

Also, their overall lack of communication regarding it has been concerning in general.

Reply ButtonReply

Carol Pickersgill

Completely agree. A month in advance is ridiculous – unless they are offering discounts for payment in advance. Normal is to charge when sent – or in very close time frame. The expectation that you are to look at social media for updates is also unrealistic. That is not customer service:( I’ve still not received single response to all my requests for an update. Unreal and just poor customer service overall.

Carol Pickersgill

Any updates on the Fall box? My payment was taken from my account couple weeks ago – and just shows as “unfilled”. Anyone getting any response from Customer Service?

I finally got a customer service reply…
Super frustrating!!

Hello,

Thank you for contacting the BE KIND. box.

We are very excited to announce the Fall 2019 box in the next few days! It has not shipped just yet, as soon as it does you will receive a confirmation email along with the tracking information.

Please stay tuned and keep an eye out for our email and our social media accounts… 😉

Thank you and BE KIND.,
BE KIND. Customer Service

Carol Pickersgill

And… I’ve still not received a single response from Customer Service. And no movement / update on tracking. Plus nothing on social media. And we are heading into October:(

Kate N.

I received the exact same email yesterday. Not particularly helpful….

Carol Pickersgill

Thanks for sharing! Bit crazy the lack of communication from their CS! Glad that you received a reply! Thanks again!

Talya

Thanks for sharing! I cancelled my subscription earlier today but figured I would try to be patient for another few days for my last box to ship. At least now we know it’s actually going to ship!

Kate N.

I was charged on the 9th. I’ve reached out to CS multiple times now and haven’t received any response at all from them. Very frustrating…

Reply ButtonReply

Carol Pickersgill

Frustrating – and concerning…. I’ve also sent multiple inquiries to Customer Service on box status (mentioning that I’ve already been charged) – and absolutely nothing in return. Other boxes that have this poor of Customer Service would be getting blasted – but it is weirdly quiet. There is no phone # either – just email that they don’t respond to… @liz_cadman have you heard anything on status? Has this sub box been cancelled?

Jen

@Liz_Cadman Shouldn’t we have spoilers for the Fall box by now?

Reply ButtonReply

Holly

@Liz_Cadman It’s the 23rd of September and on the BeKind site, I am listed as PAID but UNFULLFILLED. As in, the box hasn’t been sent. So why is that?maybe Liz has some influence on finding out?

Reply ButtonReply

Courtnn

I agree!! I don’t think we should have been charged so long ago and still no box and no spoilers. ??? 😞

Reply ButtonReply

Shannon

What’s going on with this box? You can’t sign up for Fall on their site. Thats not a good sign.

Reply ButtonReply

Sonia

I read it was sold out. They had a BOGO offer for new subscribers. Buy one get one free!!! I agree it would be nice to see spoilers. I was charged on Sep 9. It sucks that the offer was only for new subscribers

Reply ButtonReply

Sam

Hi Sonia! Where did you see this info? Thanks 😁

Renee'

I wish I knew, they have already charged me for the fall box. Some spoilers would have been nice.

Reply ButtonReply

Amy

Also, they have not replied to my multiple requests (starting on the 6th) to cancel…so I just did a chargeback. Agreed that I don’t want to be subscribed if they charge us before revealing any spoilers

Michelle Jaquish

The box with the diffuser was amazing but other than that I haven’t seen one that’s been all that great. This one seemed very light and just very boring. A box of water? I guess I could get a glass and fill it with some rocks add water in a tea light. Just ewwww.

Reply ButtonReply

C02

In order to get the $20 credit for the boxed water, you need to email the company to get a code.

They do not respond to emails.

Anyone else have this problem?

Reply ButtonReply

Sonia

I just put the code in the card and it worked for me. I actually used it 3 times.

Reply ButtonReply

C02

Update: I got a response from Boxed Water and they told me my email didn’t match my Be Kind By Ellen subscription. Which is not true. They need to fix their system because now I hate BoxedWater.

Reply ButtonReply

C02

Update: They again told me that I was not a BEKIND subscriber so they asked to see my subscription receipt. I did and they finally gave me the code with no apologies. I used it for a $20 T-shirt (free shipping).

Ariana

I recently tried the C-Tango Eye Cream and found it to be really good on top of my moisturizer (not DE brand) and under my makeup. I almost wish I had this box just for the littles!

Reply ButtonReply

HB

What a great review! I have a better appreciation for the items after reading this. For me, this box was worth it for the DE products and for introducing me to Aaptiv, which has really kickstarted my workout routine. I’m definitely going to subscribe on my own after this free trial sub runs out.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Loved the DE kit so much. Probably going to be an issue for my bank account when it runs out..

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

Cm anyone tell me how long after you order this sub box ships? It’s my first

Reply ButtonReply

DanielleL

I was billed May 31st and it hasn’t shipped yet.

Reply ButtonReply

Sammee

I ordered on the 9th and it shipped on the 11th.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

One thing I really appreciate about this box and why I decided to purchase after reading the review, is that it emphasizes quality. After two months of made in China beauty and skincare thrown into boxes to inflate their value I appreciate getting a box of things I can really use. But I will totally try those ptomo codes. Free stuff is free stuff to me 😁

Reply ButtonReply

Jenn

I’m really torn on this… if it just had another rites or two instead of the codes, I’d get it for sure.

Reply ButtonReply

MizzMo

I filled my votive holder with cheap coffee beans. Looks super cute and I have been getting lots of compliments!

We actually like this box – however, the promo codes were totally lame and I said as much when I did the satisfaction survey that they send each month. I would recommend subscribers pay attention to those emails and take the time to let Be Kind know your feelings regarding the box received.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

So cute! I keep trying to decide cool new things to fill mine with. Glitter? Beads? So many things!

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

I love this idea !! I couldn’t decide what to put in the votive , but I think I might try this 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

SquirrelyGirl

I love that you filled the tealight holder with crystals. That is exactly what I would do!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

It was my first thought. LOVE little crystals. 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Amy

Do you know if the straws are dishwasher safe?

Reply ButtonReply

Virginia

I would have loved to receive this box. I am all for conservation and there is so little I am able to do to help—-having reusable straws (and definitely a brush to keep them clean) and water in a paper carton are small things we can do. The only time I have ever used bottled water was when on a trip. Liz, if you drink from the tap I hope you use a filter. Have you ever seen the results your city puts out as to what is in the water not to mention the pipes the water is running through? I also have no use for the trial gift cards.

Reply ButtonReply

Mary

I read the water report and in my area it is excellent quality. Much cheaper and better for the environment than packaged water.

Reply ButtonReply

Liz

Yes, of course I use a filter. I try to implement the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” mantra. Reducing waste is actually the most important step! Hence why I drink tap water and use my reusable water bottle.

Reply ButtonReply

Michele

The last box was terrible. And I, stupidly, purchased it before spoilers. As for this box, the only great thing is the Drunk Elephant. But since I have full sizes in all the products I like, there was no point getting this box. But the littles are a great way to experience the product and find what works for you. On a side note, their marula oil is ridiculously expensive. Go on Ebay or Amazon and you can find organic 100% pure marula oil for about $9 to $15 and get much more oil for the money.

Great review. Disappointing box. Definitely glad I skip this one.

Reply ButtonReply

Renee

Yeah, I bought the last one without spoilers, and hated it. But there were two broken/damaged items, and their CS sucked. Never again.

Reply ButtonReply

Christina

Renee
Did they ever replace your broken items? I had a missing code and broken candle holder and it’s been three weeks and said they were “working on a replacement”; however I have a feeling they aren’t going to 🙁

Linda

Love the crystal idea! I’m going to do that.

Reply ButtonReply

Jt

The last box was great but glad I skipped this time! Happy to see your review
