Little Bookish Wardrobe April 2019 Review

Mary Had a Little Lab by Sue Fliess - Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $11.65)

This book is the inspiration for the rest of our box, and I think it is such a fun one! Both my four-year-old daughter and my (almost) 3-year-old son really enjoyed this book and we had a lot of fun reading it together. My son even made up his own version of the song based on this story which involves a girl named Mary who loves to invent. One day she realizes that she is quite lonely and she sets about making herself a pet.

Through rhyming text, we learn how Mary created her very own wooly pet sheep and once she took it to school, everyone else wanted one too. Mary began making pet sheep for everyone until things got a bit out of control and sheep begin multiplying at a much faster rate than she expected. In the end, Mary finds a solution to her abundance of sheep problem and makes some friends in the process. It was a cute story with great illustrations and it made for a perfect box theme!

Included in our box was this card with several questions to ask the kids about the book. This was great for checking their understanding and engaging them in some critical thinking about the story.

On the reverse was a Magic Milk experiment, which we will get to a bit later in the review!

Lab Coat

Since Mary is a "budding scientist" it is only right that we received a white lab coat so that we can dress up just like her. This lab coat was really cute and the quality was decent with buttons down the front and several pockets for storing your scientific instruments. I loved that the sleeves actually had elastic in the cuff for a nice fit!

Safety Goggles

To keep us safe while we are experimenting, they sent us a pair of safety goggles. They were slightly big on my daughter, but they still served their purpose well!

Syringe Pen

To take notes on our observations, we received this fun syringe pen filled with a green liquid.

Curly Brunette Wig

The last part of our costume was this fun curly-haired wig so that we can look just like Mary with her wild scientist hair. The funny thing about my daughter though, is that she already has some wild hair just like this! But this was still a cute idea for those kids with "ruly" hair.

Here she is with her fun costume on. Now she just needs her sheep to go with it! But first, we decided to get to our experiment.

We needed to supply some blue dish soap, food coloring, milk, a shallow pan, and some cotton balls for this activity. I had my daughter check off each item with her new pen as we went down the list of materials we needed.

I added some milk to a shallow pan and then we added a few drops of blue and green food coloring.

Then we dipped a cotton ball into the blue dish soap and added it to our milk and observed the effects. My daughter loved seeing how the colors swirled around as we added the cotton balls.

She really enjoyed the experiment and we are definitely going to try it again with some more colors next time!

Sheep Sock Puppet Kit

The last item in our box was this kit to make our own sheep sock puppet. We just needed to provide some glue from home.

First, we had to fold up the little felt pieces for the ears and glue them onto our sock. They recommended using a hot glue gun, but I managed to break mine in the process, so we had to improvise when white glue just wouldn't suffice. I took two safety pins and pinned on our ears, then she used the white glue to stick on the googly eyes.

Then we drew a nose and my daughter added some cotton balls to the top to give him a nice wooly look. While they provided some cotton for us, we ended up using some of our own as well since we had some left over from our experiment.

Here she is with her sheep sock puppet (and her natural hair). Sorry it's so hard to see, but she was excited to move him around. I think he turned out pretty cute! Once I get a new hot glue gun, I'll have to permanently attach his little ears for her.

Verdict: This was our first box from Little Bookish Wardrobe and I thought it was adorable! Everything revolved around our book, which I thought was a great pick and, although it was a box designed for a girl, this could easily please any child! I like that not only did we get an outfit to dress up in, but we also got a little craft to do. Plus they provided a fun experiment and even some questions that were perfect for discussing our book. While this box was incredibly engaging, I'm not sure that all of the items we received quite added up to the promised value of $65. That being said, I do think it was worth the $40.99 ($32.99 a month plus $8.00 shipping) cost of the box for such a great curation and an enjoyable experience!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Your first box will be the May box.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

Your little scientist is too cute, & I love the idea of there being both activities & something to wear related to the book.
