Korean Snacks Box April 2019 "Lotus Lantern Festival" Review

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Info Card

Every month, we have an info card that lists giveaway information and a link of the theme curation (check it out at here!)

This month's theme is the Lotus Lantern Festival, a beautiful, traditional festival where we decorate the streets and the Cheonggyechon recreation space with colorful rice paper lanterns. In honor of the Buddhist culture, KSB has packed colorful snacks of various types and flavors for a festive mood.

Let’s dig in!

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Goraebap Bag Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Goraebap Pcs

Goraebab / 고래밥

I’ve never tried these whale crackers before, but according to my mom, she remembers the taste from her childhood! These delicious savory sweet snacks have a kind of BBQ sauce flavor-- delicious! The texture of the snacks is the best, with a really light cracker that melts like butter in your mouth. Best. Snack. Ever!

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Sourgummy Bag

Sinjjuri Gumi / 신쫄이구미

These sour gummies are a new trend in Korea! I haven’t seen these before either, but they’re delicious and unlike many other sour gummies, they have a sweet filling inside.

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Sourgummy Cola

The cola gummy inside jelly texture almost had a fun fizz in them (but it must be my imagination :D) The sour gummy outside surprisingly matches very well with the sweet inside, and I loved the refreshing cola taste. Just for fun, I put them in the freezer to make them cold (like cold soda!) but I wouldn’t recommend (*^^*)

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Sourgummy Strawberry

These gummies had a nice, sweet strawberry-jam type of taste that went well with the sour powder. It gave a lovely tart strawberry feeling!

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Frenchpie Pcs Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Frenchpie Strawberry

Hooraenchi Pie / 후렌치파이

Personally, I don’t like these pies as much, but they have been around for a long time and are a classic Korean treat. These mini pies mimic French style laminated dough with a lovely flaky crust. The pie is topped with a squirt of jam, strawberry or apple, and topped with a crunchy sugar crystal glaze. Pair it with a beautiful floral tea for the best snack!

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Jelly Straw Pcs Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Jelly Straw Open

Jelly Straws / 젤리스트로우

I’ve tried jelly cups before (they are SO good, they’re sold in large plastic tubs at your local Asian supermarket) but jelly straws?! The delicious artificial orange and grape flavors aside, I enjoyed the convenience of the packaging - a quick rip and slurp. These jellies are best eaten cold, but beware, as they squirt!

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Indivcandy Pcs Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Mychew Peach

My Chew / 마이쮸

We’ve all eaten and loved Japanese manufactured Hi-Chews, but are you ready for the Korean take? My Chews are fruit flavored caramels with a chewy, gum-like texture. They’re less sweet than Hi-Chews and tend to be a bit sour because of the added Vitamin C. These soft caramels are the perfect burst of sugar to wake that afternoon drowse!

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Sunkist Orange

Sunkist / 썬키스트

These candies were so refreshing! Sunkist’s famous fruit candies are hard candies with a perfect mix of sweet and sour and have jam in the center! Grape was the best-- it’s my favorite artificial candy flavor 😉 I received lemon, orange, and grape flavors.

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Egg Biscuit Box Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Egg Biscuit Bag

Gyeran Egg Cookies / 계란과자

Aww, it’s Molang!! Molang is an adorable, chubby white rabbit with an enthusiastic personality - he and his shy best friend Piu Piu are together on a farm.

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Egg Biscuit Pcs

These sweet and crispy cookies are similar to Nilla wafers, but with a softer texture and less sweetness. The vanilla and egg fluffiness really pair well in this snack, which is a longtime favorite for all Koreans-- my mom loved these when she was a kid!

Korean Snacks Box April 2019 - Candy Bag

Korean Fortune Bag / 복주머니

Every Korean Snacks Box gifts a beautiful 복주머니, or a lucky fortune bag made in Korea! Fit for spring, this month’s silk bag is a lovely golden yellow color, with tight and well-knotted accessory balls, and fits the candy pieces well*

Verdict: I was SO excited to receive this box - there are a lot of Korean grocery stores around me, but there are still snacks local to Korea I’ve always wanted to try! My favorite snack was goraebab. They just melted right in my mouth with a beautiful, almost BBQ-like sweet and savory flavor that was so tasty!! It was fun to have a variety of colors, tastes, and textures, from jellies to savory crisps, to lovely egg cookies. The candies I’m saving for testing times, so they’re scattered across different pencil cases.
