High Strung April 2019 Review

high strung april 2019 - Information booklet Top

This is a review of the package for electric guitars. This is the only literature that was included in my package. This month's box features Dunlop products.

Dunlop Electric Nickel Strings - Retail Value $6.71

My strings are in great shape at the moment, so I did not restring my guitar, but these are the strings of the month. It is so important to have a full set on hand - guitar strings break really easily! And they take a lot of abuse. These are nickel wound and range in gauge from 10 - 46. I have never tried these, but I have heard good things about them.

Dunlop Variety Pack of 12 Picks - Retail Value $6.18

The only thing a guitarists needs more of than strings are picks! They are impossible to keep track of. Unless you are married to my husband, in which case you can just go get them out of the clothes dryer, haha! I am happy that they sent me medium/heavy gauge as I play hard and will break light picks. You can see that some of them have grips and some do not, which makes a difference. I like having the option of trying all these different kinds out before I commit to a specific pick.

Dunlop Lok Strap - Retail value $4.46

These are locks that you can put on your guitar strap to keep it from slipping off your guitar, possibly causing the guitar to crash to the ground. That's never a good feeling. You should be able to theoretically slip this over your strap button and strap once the strap is attached, twist it, and lock it into place. Unfortunately, my strap button is too big for this, so I passed it on to my husband. Dunlop does sell buttons that have their own locking system, but since mine is bigger, it is unlikely that my strap will ever fall off. It was hard to get on.

Jim Dunlop Advanced Capo - Retail value $6.89

This is the first time I have ever seen a capo with a fabric strap, they are usually more like a clip. But I like it! I like it mainly because a fabric strap will not scratch up my guitar neck! A capo is a bar that you secure to one of the frets to change the key of your strings uniformly. It is often used when you need to play in a key you are unfamiliar with or that has difficult finger positions. I feel like the fabric strap will eventually be too loose, but it has a winching action so you can tighten it up as needed.

Dunlop Glass Slide - Retail Value $6.42

I have always wanted a glass slide, and now I have one! I know, I could have easily just bought one, but it's one of those things that I just don't buy unless I need it for something specific. Now I have one just to play with! I don't really have a frame of reference, but it fits and works well from what I can tell. This may be obvious, but you put it on your finger so you can slide up and down the strings as you play. I was at the Allman Brothers Museum in Macon, Georgia once and saw a slide Duane Allman used to use. It was a glass aspirin bottle! This is similar, but both ends are open.

The Verdict: My first package from High Strung was really fun! I love having the opportunity to try out all kinds of new toys with my guitar. I am especially happy to finally have a glass slide! The total value of this box is $30.66, which is only slightly higher than the $29.99 cost of the box (including free shipping to the Continental US). I think this subscription would be a lot more of a no-brainer if they could offer a bit more of a discount (make sure to use our MSA20 code to save 20% off your first box!.

I ordered this subscription for my son as a birthday gift and now found out that it has vanished and he never received it. I paid for 6 months worth in advance any idea how to get my money back?

And just like that, HighStrung has vanished. Went to check on my June box shipment and *poof* the website is shuttered. Still had 2 months left on my subscription. Just as well anyway, the quality of the items in the boxes I did receive was ok but not great.
