Two Pink Balloons April 2019 “Earth” Review
This is the parent guide that we received with information on the items in our box. This month’s theme is “Earth” and each page provides useful information about how to use the included activities with your child. They also included a coupon code for 20% off in their shop as well as a spoiler for next month’s theme which is Spring Garden.
In your first box, you’ll receive a felt lap board to use with various felt activities that they send each month. We received this bright green one in our March box.
Recycling and Sorting Felt Board Activity Set – Estimated Value $18 (based on similar sets in their shop)
This first activity is perfect for an Earth-themed box. We received four separate cans to sort our recycling and several pictures of items that need to be recycled. The pieces are nicely made from eco-felt and wool felt.
This was a great activity for my daughter who was able to look at the pictures and sort them somewhat independently. I love that this activity had her looking at pictures and thinking about what they were made of and where they belonged. I was actually surprised at how quickly she took to it and had her pieces sorted. This is a great way to teach her about recycling too! I love that the learning is happening on so many different levels with such a simple activity and one that really engaged her.
Bee Counting and Hive – Retail Value $16
This little beehive is adorable! It features a little hole in the center and came with several cute bees stored inside as well as some numbers.
There are ten bees to go along with our ten hexagonal numbers and the quality of this set is really nice! The detail of the little bees is great and I love the way that bright yellow thread pops!
This set really appealed to my son and he loved playing with the bees and tucking them into the hive and taking them out, but my daughter was the one who was able to get a lot out of this one educationally. First I had her pull a number from the hive and then count and place the correct number of bees next to it.
She was also able to use the numbers for sequencing and then for some free play by adding the shapes together to make her own unique honeycomb shape. I love that there are so many ways to play with this simple set and I especially love that the bees and numbers get tucked away neatly inside the hive for storage.
Earth Color Match Wheel Busy Bag – Retail Value $11
This next activity came in its own storage bag and included a wooden circle with an Earth and several colors around the edge. We also received eight clothespins that had been colored to match our color wheel. This doesn’t quite have the same quality feel as the other activities, but I do think this is a great idea and it definitely appealed to my kids.
The activity itself is really basic, but it is great for teaching fine motor skills and perfect for my 2.5-year-old son. He knows all of his colors and is great at sorting and matching, but he definitely had trouble manipulating the clothespins, so this will be great practice as he tries to clip the clothespins to the coordinating colors. They recommend just keeping this one in your diaper bag as a busy activity that will help develop their muscle memory by doing it over and over again.
Our bag had actually split apart a bit at the seam on the side, but fortunately, a piece of packing tape was all it took to fix it!
Plant a Tree – Sequencing Felt Board Activity Set – Estimated Value $18 (based on similar sets in their shop)
This last activity is a great one for learning sequencing and also for some free play fun. These felt pieces also go with our felt lap board and each piece features a different stage of planting a tree. Another great Earth-themed set!
My daughter and I worked on this one together and she found it a little bit tricky, but having such a visual, hands-on activity was a fun way to talk about sequencing and I see it also leading to a great chat about nature!
Verdict: I love that Two Pink Balloons went with an Earth theme for April and the activities all went really well with the theme. The activities all had a real handcrafted feel and were quality materials. They were also very educational, but in a fun and engaging way that allowed my kids to learn in an enjoyable way. I love the idea of quiet activities that can travel with us to occupy the kids and these ideas were all so creative. Handmade activities such as these can get quite pricey and after researching them a bit on Etsy, I think these retail values are pretty comparable. I estimate the total value of the items we received to be around $63 which is a pretty rough estimate, but I think that’s great for a $42/month + free shipping box full of creative handmade activities!
