Green Kid Crafts "Rainbow Science" Review
This is the included booklet that we received which tells us our theme which is Rainbow Science. The first page included a table of contents as well as an introduction to the topic and some fun facts about rainbows.
Inside the booklet were several fun pages including a maze, a comic strip and a few fun experiments such as making a traveling water rainbow.
It also included a recipe for a rainbow salad, some recommended rainbow-themed books, and their social media information on the back.
The next item is a sticker chart for us to collect our Green Kid Crafts badges. This month we received the Rainbow Expert badge. We can also color in our chart to personalize it and continue to add badges to it.
Kit 1: Color Games
Our first kit included two color games for us to play.
To play our color scavenger hunt we received these six pieces of colored cellophane paper and two dice.
The first die had six different colors while the second was a typical numbered die. The object of the game was to roll the dice and then find however many objects in whatever color you landed on. This was a really fun activity for us and the kids and I had a good time roaming around the house finding different objects to match our colors.
Once we found our objects, we started to form a rainbow with them on the ground using our cellophane sheets as a guide. My only complaint is that there was no orange, but instead, we received pink. It didn't really affect anything though other than not being a true rainbow!
Once we finished our rainbow, I got us some Tupperware lid tops and we used them to see how the colors of the cellophane changed when a different color was underneath. This was a great visual learning experience.
Our second game ended up becoming more of a collaborative drawing. We used the colored die from the first game and this really cool stacking crayon (although I think it was more of a pencil) to draw something that was the same color that we rolled. Fortunately, this time our pinkest crayon was actually red so it matched the colors on our die.
We took turns rolling and drawing and adding to our picture. That's my purple ball and then my son added some green grass (and something red?) while my daughter added the yellow sun, blue clouds, and pink flowers. We had fun brainstorming what we could add while using the appropriate color and making it fit into our picture. I think that overall these color games are great rainy day ideas that we can use over and over again!
Kit 2: Rainbow Prisms
The second kit involved exploring rainbow prisms which my kids thought was really cool. We received this nice teardrop prism with many different facets and a hole at the top.
We actually started with project 2 this time so that we could explore how the prism looked in different lights. We used a flashlight and a glass of water and a piece of white paper to see how the light would reflect. We were even able to find the tiny rainbow in the light that we cast.
The other activity in this kit was to make a suncatcher using our prism, some beads, and a pipe cleaner.
I attached the pipe cleaner to the prism and then the kids took turns adding beads until it was complete.
Now we have this nice suncatcher hanging in our window to catch the light!
Kit 3: Rainbow Mobile
Our last kit involved painting some rainbows using the paints and the brush that they provided. We had to provide our own paper for the second part, but they included some pieces for the first project.
The first project was to use the wooden rainbow and string to make a rainbow mobile. I set my daughter up with this one since it was really only big enough for one person. While I wish she had painted in the lines instead of blending her colors together, I had to step back and let her be creative! While she worked independently on that, my son and I started with the second project.
This one turned out beautifully! I painted his hands with a rainbow of colors and then we stamped his hands along the paper to form a rainbow. We did this a few times, but then it turned into a free paint session. While it got a bit messy, the paint did wash off very easily, which I was grateful for!
They really enjoyed painting their hands over and over again and applying it to the paper. It was a lot of fun and I think this will make a great outdoor activity if we can get our hands on some large paper and use the washable paint we already have!
Verdict: I thought the idea of rainbow science was a great idea for our Green Kid Crafts box this month and I love that there are a variety of activities and a range of materials in each box. I love the STEAM aspect and that they have sustainability in mind with their packaging and materials and that it is well organized. My kids really love the activities and they are age appropriate, but I just can't help but feeling like we need one more activity to really set this subscription apart and add to the value of this $25.90 ($19.95 + $5.95 shipping) box!
