This is a review of the large dog box for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies. My dog, Nyx, is an 84-pound Rottweiler who is definitely a power chewer; she also has inflammatory bowel disease so we avoid pretty much all grains and most animal proteins.

VetPet Box Dog March 2019 Review
Please note: This subscription is somewhat customized based on preferences you select when you sign up. So, what you’ll see below are treats for a food-sensitive dog and toys for a heavy chewer:
Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box. Note: there are some variations based on sign-up preferences so you will not receive every item on the card.
And the last piece of literature was this educational brochure. There is always good information in there about a particular doggie-related health topic. (This is considered one of the benefits of paying for a subscription so the content is not reproduced here.) This month the information related to pet ideal weight.
This dog weight chart was provided along with some questions for you to answer and discuss with your vet. There was also a walking program. Unfortunately, Nyx can’t walk for these lengths of time because she has bad knees (she has lost muscle mass due to her IBD medicines). But they’re a good starting point if you have a healthy dog.
I’m not sure where I would put Nyx on the ideal weight chart. She has what my vet calls “prednisone belly” so her weight is distributed a little oddly. But honestly, I think she is a reasonable weight for an IBD dog.
On to the items:
Orbee Tuff Recycle Ball – Retail Value $14.95
This has a hole so you can insert a treat (for Nyx, we used peanut butter). These are pretty durable from past experience with the brand. And as you can see, there are holes in both ends so there are not going to be any suction issues. This also apparently floats, although Nyx hates water so we weren’t able to test that.
Scented Waste Bags and Dispenser by Earth Rated – Retail Value $3.99
I have never understood the principle behind scented dog waste bags because you can still smell the dog waste over the bag scent, but they *are* functional dog waste bags so they will get used. (We are familiar with this brand from past dog subscription boxes.) Nyx has to take a lot of fiber for her IBD so she has a lot of, um, output, and this will last us maybe 3-4 days. Good times.
Wild Earth Good Protein Dog Snacks with Koji – Retail Value $9.99
This is a new brand for us. Unfortunately, they are not grain free (have oat flour), although they are free of animal proteins so they will work for a lot of food-sensitive dogs. Koji is a mushroom-based ingredient that includes all the essential amino acids that dogs can’t synthesize themselves.
Orbee Tuff Snoop – Retail Value $20.95
This isn’t a chew toy; rather, you put your dog’s food in there and they have to figure out how to get it out. It’s supposed to help dogs eat more slowly. Now, Nyx only eats wet food (trust me, we’ve tried *everything*) but she can sometimes have a few small treats, so I put some in here and she actually did try to get them out (usually she gives up, so her effort was a pleasant surprise).
Luxury Leash from Frenchiestore – Retail Value $19.99 (found on sale here for $9.99)
A leash is a perfect inclusion in a box dedicated to dog exercise and weight loss. We were looking for a new leash. We are still trying to decide what we think of this one as it does seem to be sturdy enough for a large breed dog, but it is a little shorter than the one we had been using, and that takes some getting used to. I like that the pattern is very girly because Nyx always gets mistaken for a boy dog (even though I got her a hot pink collar with crystals embedded in it).

This didn’t make for the best pictures, but rest assured this toy was keeping her active and occupied for a longer time than most toys of this type do.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $69.87 for March’s VetPet Box. That’s about $20 over the month-to-month cost of the box, which I think is a good value. Once again, all the items were currently on the market from major retailers (no closeouts) and everything seemed high quality. I also thought everything really integrated well into the healthy weight theme.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Due to customization (dog size/chewing habits/dietary issues), boxes may vary from month-to-month. New subscribers typically receive an introductory box first. However, if you’d like to get a repeat of a past box, contact Vet Pet Box – if your dog has major dental issues, as an example, they want you to be able to get the dental health box and the items within more than once if it will be useful to you. And the same goes for any other theme.
