Elephant Books is a children's book subscription box for ages 0-6. They specialize in recently published books and new discoveries, so they don't send anything that's movie tie-ins, have re-purposed characters, or are "classics." Their goal is to send books that are original, literary, and appeal to both boys' and girls' interests.

This is a review of the Picture Books subscription for children 2-6.

Chimpanzees For Tea - Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $12.50)

I love the art in this book. It's very whimsical and breezy. It's about a boy whose mother sends him to the store to pick up a few items ("a bunch of carrots, a box of rice, some China tea, a big, firm pear, and a tin of peas"). However, along the way the boy gets distracted and as he tries to remember the list of things his brain basically plays telephone with itself and morphs the things he was supposed to get into ridiculously silly things ("tin of peas is replaced by a trapeze; a big, firm pear becomes a big furry bear; and a box of rice transforms into a box of mice!"). It's a cute story that got a few giggles out of my son!

I am the Mountain Mouse - Retail Value: $16.99 (found here for $13.80)

I liked this book least of the two, but it's still a cute book. There are three sub-stories, all giving different examples of one mouse friend thinking he's being braver and better and more daring than the other three, brazenly overcoming any obstacle in his way. He tells his friends to worry less and have more fun but he ends finds himself in some predicaments (swimming in a cat's water bowl, climbing a mountain that ends up actually being a camel, climbing a tree to get in an eagle's nest...). There's not much of a real moral lesson in this book but it's a cute story that held my son's attention.

The Verdict: This was my first delivery from Elephant Books and I'm happy with it! I really love that they don't send books with movie tie-ins or reused characters and that they promise a free replacement if you get a book you already own, and a 30-day money back guarantee. My son and I both enjoyed reading these two books together and I'm looking forward to future boxes.

Cady

Hi there, my son just turned 3 and has a growing love for reading so I really would like to get him a sub box for books! I can’t decide though between this one and Lillypost. Which do you think is best?

Cady,
I looked at all the options and ended up choosing Elephant Books because I thought their books seemed to be the highest quality. We have a 6 month subscription and I think I will renew. We have been happy every month.
