BloomsyBox March 2019 Review

BloomsyBox bouquets arrive with their blooms wrapped in paper and then in plastic for protection.

The stems are secured to the box with a zip tie so they don't jostle around and protected by styrofoam. They usually have a BloomsyBox-themed ribbon wrapped around them, like they did this month. And, except for on rare occasions, they don't have any sort of moisture system for the tips of the stems, so you really want to open your box and place the blooms in water as soon as possible when it arrives!

The blooms on each flower this month had a protective netting around it. It was kind of satisfying to pull off, though from what I can tell it's plastic netting, which struck me as being very wasteful.

There was no card giving information about this month's flowers, but I recognize them as gerbera daisies. It's typical for this type of flower to have a straw-like support slipped onto its stem since they droop easily. I love the bright yellow hue!

I only received one packet of flower food this month instead of two. As usual, I filled my vase about halfway with room temperature water and added the entire packet of flower food.

Then I snipped the ends of my stems at an angle. Gerbera daisies have very soft stems, so these were quite easy to trim!

So beautiful! I took some of the support straw-things off the stems so that they weren't so visible when you look at the arrangement. Some of them fell to the bottom of the stem when I placed the bunch in water. I wasn't worried about it—I figured some natural drooping would give my arrangement an effortless feel!

My box arrived while I was at work, and I didn't have the opportunity to unpack it until the next morning. Considering they sat in the box without being in water overnight, I thought they looked really nice on the first day. They're soaking up the sunshine here!

On Day Two, I trimmed the stems and changed the water. I didn't have a second packet of flower food to add, so they were on their own. They're already browning a bit when you look closely, but I still think they look lovely. On Day Three, however, a few of the outer-most flowers started to noticeably droop. This was disappointing, but not entirely surprising given the flower breed. After removing the droopy ones from the vase and giving the remaining flowers another trim and fresh water, the bouquet still looked nice for a few more days!

Verdict: This is my fourth month receiving BloomsyBox and while I'm always delighted and impressed with the flowers when I first unpack them, I've found they don't often have as long of a vase-life as flowers I might buy locally. Another wish I have for this box is for it to consistently include information about the type of flower, where they're sourced from, and care specific to the genus. This box costs $49.99, and I would say other months have been a better value than this one was.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you'll receive the April bouquet. Boxes ship between the 16th and the 23rd of each month.

I still don’t know where Walmart gets their bouquets but they last me two weeks and I don’t change the water as I don’t want to lose the flower food. I just keep adding fresh water as needed. I also use filtered water so there will be no chlorine or “Neuse River Mud” in the flower water.

I’d rather go to Trader Joe’s and get these for $5

Wow. If I had spent $50 for gerber daisies I would be very sad.

I have found that flowers live much longer out of direct sunlight.
