Tea Box Express February 2019 Review

You can usually expect one tea (sometimes more), one accessory, and one edible item (sometimes more) in this box. Occasionally there will be other tea-themed items as well:

There was a card asking you to share your box contents on social media. This subscription typically does not have an information card with it. Sometimes there are product literature inserts relating to brands from the box.

Unna Bakery Brown Butter Cookie – Buy 6 Pouches for $11.95

One thing I love about this subscription is finding out about all kinds of small companies that I never would have heard of otherwise. This brand is totally new to me. I am not normally a huge fan of hard, packaged cookies, but these had a rather addictive texture and just the right level of sweetness.

Unna Bakery Raspberry Cave Thumbprint Cookie – Buy 6 Pouches for $11.95

These were great, also. The filling part kind of came out of the cookie in one piece, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  (I do tend to like desserts with a bit of fruity flavoring which is probably why I enjoyed these.)

Tea Box Express February 2019 - Caramels 1 Tea Box Express February 2019 - Caramels 2

Big Picture Farm Goat’s Milk Caramels – Retail Value $7.99

These are kind of spendy for caramels but I guess that’s how it goes with artisanal products sometimes. I was a little nervous about trying goat’s milk caramels as I have not really liked other goat’s milk dairy products I’ve tried in the past, but these were wonderful. The taste was great and the texture was almost melt-in-your-mouth soft and not at all too sticky.

Tea Box Express February 2019 - Chocolate

Nunu Chocolates Solid Chocolate Heart Lollipop – Retail Value $2

Sorry, no second picture of this unwrapped but it was kind of falling apart. This was just milk chocolate and I was happy with that (milk chocolate is sort of underrepresented in subscription boxes these days, seems like everything is dark, but I’ll be honest, my sweet tooth prefers milk chocolate). It was a nice inclusion for Valentine’s Day.

Beach House Teas Coastal Cleanse Facial Steam – Retail Value $6

This smells really nice and it is beautiful to look at, as well. I like to do facial steams with eucalyptus oil when I am congested but rarely do them with other ingredients so this was a nice treat before some other pampering (i.e., a clay mask; I think this helped open up my pores and made the mask more effective).

Beach House Teas Rose City Dark – Retail Value $12

This is black tea with peppermint and rose petals. That sounded super weird to me at first, and I expected it to taste like black tea with mint, but it was surprisingly good (good enough to buy again) and more complex than expected. I like black teas but have been getting a lot of overly sweet flavored ones lately, and this was not too sweet and I’m a fan.

Verdict: I couldn’t calculate a total value for the January Tea Box Express since some of the food items aren’t available for individual purchase. The subscription costs $31.99 (including shipping) and if you add up the tea, facial steam, caramels, and chocolate lollipop, you get $28.99, which leaves about $3 for all the cookies together, so you come out slightly ahead in terms of retail value. More to the point, all of these items are from small companies and you’d have to find each company on your own and then pay for shipping and/or make a minimum order to get all of these items, so I think there is also some value in the curation and ability to sample items before buying in full size. I was happy about all the food this month, I won’t lie, and the tea was a nice surprise as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your subscription would start with the March box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $31.99 (including shipping).  Together, the tea, facial steam, caramels, and chocolate lollipop are about $28.99, leaving $3 for both packs of cookies together.
