Foodstirs Baker's Club: Cutie Cupcake Review
I love that Foodstirs conserves paper and always includes some sort of fun activity on the back of their Nutritional Facts sheet. This Tic-Tac-Toe game is too cute!
This is the included recipe card with a photo of the finished product for reference. It also tells you how long it will take and everything you will need from home. They provided all of the dry ingredients, but we needed to provide an egg, butter, water, and some plain yogurt. This recipe makes about 8 cupcakes.
The directions are broken down into six steps with pictures to go along with them. They were very clear and easy to follow, which means the process is usually pretty smooth!
Foodstirs Organic Ultimate Chocolate Cake Mix - Retail Value $5.99
This month we received their ultimate chocolate cake mix and eight of these red and pink silicone heart-shaped cupcake molds. I have always wanted a set of silicone cupcake molds so I was excited to receive such cute ones!
We dumped our mix into a bowl and I added one egg, then my daughter poured in the water and vegetable oil for us. Then we all took turns stirring it up.
I lined up the molds on a baking sheet and then sprayed them all with nonstick cooking spray before filling them with batter. I first filled them to the little fill line, but the recipe said to divide the batter so I kept going. I still had a little extra batter after filling them all close to the top, so I really probably could have gotten another cupcake or two out of this!
Foodstirs Organic Vanilla Frosting Mix
While the cupcakes baked in the oven, I mixed up the butter and plain greek yogurt and then added the frosting mix and stirred it until it was smooth.
Next, I added my pink packet of powdered food dye. This is a plant-based dye made from beets and I thought it actually had a slight berry flavor, but I don't know if that is just my brain playing tricks on me since it looks like a berry frosting!
They also provided a piping bag which I filled up and placed in the refrigerator until it was time to use it.
Then, I poured the chocolate chips into a bowl and added some vegetable oil before heating them in the microwave. Then I stirred them until the chocolate was completely melted.
The cupcakes baked up nicely, and even though I probably overfilled them and turned them into more of a traditional cupcake shape, they still looked cute since they were in the molds. I used a teaspoon and scooped out a little bit of the center of each cupcake.
I filled each hole with frosting and then placed the little top piece back on.
Then, my son helped me cover each of the cupcakes with the melted chocolate by just dripping it on top. Then I placed them in the refrigerator so that the tops would harden before decorating them.
After ten minutes, they weren't as hard as they should have been, but since we were decorating them as a family and it was getting close to bath time, we went ahead and added our designs anyway. The tops were cool, but I didn't think to put the pink frosting back in the fridge while we were waiting for the chocolate to harden, so it went on a little drippy. The kids helped me pipe some designs by squeezing the piping bag with me and the bottom is the one that my daughter "designed" on her own.
Despite being a little melty on top still, they were delicious and the kids just ate them right out of the molds.
Here is what one looks like after the chocolate hardens. They came out of the mold a little better when they were cold, but it was still much easier to eat them right out of the molds than to remove them like you normally would!
Verdict: This month was such a fun sweetheart themed Foodstirs Baker's Club box! I love the heart-shaped cupcake molds and am super excited to have them to use again in the future. The cupcakes were delicious, the directions were easy to follow, and I only had to provide a few things from home. Overall, it was convenient having this set delivered to our door and the result was a cute and delicious treat. I love that I can also feel good about the ingredients since they are fair-trade, organic, non-GMO, and free of chemicals! It does look like the cost of these kits recently went up and the total cost is now $32.98 ($24.99 + $7.99 shipping) which seems like a lot, but when you break it down, that's about $4.12 for each organic cupcake and I know I've paid at least $3 for a grocery store cupcake before that was nowhere near as delicious and made from who knows what. I think it makes a nice treat and a fun experience every other month to receive these kits!
