Birchbox Man Sample Box January 2019 Review

I'm having my husband, John, give me his rundown of this box since he is the expert in being a guy. 🙂 Just a quick snapshot of his skin and hair so you can see how these items work for him:

  • Face - Smooth, clear, and in great shape considering he does nothing to keep it that way. He had acne as a teen but took Accutane, so no more active breakouts but some scarring. I'm currently trying to convince him how important it is to work on preventing aging before they start.
  • Hair - Course and wavy.

Each box comes with a card detailing the month's theme, items included, and some tips on how to use them. Now, on to the items!

Baxter of California Daily Face Wash, 1oz - Estimated Value $2.75 (Buy an 8oz full size for $22)

This is a nice basic face wash that leaves John's skin clean and fresh but not squeaky feeling. It lathers up to a nice soft foam and is easy to work into his beard. It's also easy to rinse out of his beard. It has a slightly sweet honey-like scent, but it's pretty subtle. John would buy it again but he really prefers face washes that are minty.

Duke Cannon Big Ass Brick of Soap, Jr. - FULL SIZE 4.5oz Jr! Retail Value $5 (Buy a 10 oz. soap for $10.50 here)

For being a half ration of their regular size, this Jr. is still quite a big chunk of soap. I really like the scent of this; it's herby and fresh and lingers a little on the skin. There a little texture to the bar that you can feel in your hands, but it's not scratchy on the skin. Actually, the lather this soap creates is super soft and creamy. John says this is his favorite soap bar he's ever tried.

Kiehl's Facial Fuel Moisturizer SPF 20, .5oz - Estimated Value $5 (Buy a 2.5oz full size for $25)

Yay for SPF! This is a wonderful facial gel-lotion. It's very lightweight but very hydrating and the dimethicone base dries down to a velvety feel and seals in moisture. John loves that it works into his brows and beard easily without turning them white. I've even reached for it a few times and love it!

Oars + Alps Shine-Free Lip Balm - FULL SIZE! Retail Value $5

I've never seen anyone go through lip balm like John. He must have it with him wherever he goes. He says this one reminds him of one of his go-tos, Burt's Bees, but better. It's smooth, minty, and really shine-free. He says the moisturized feel lasts for a while too. This balm has now risen to the top of his list.

Ursa Major Fortifying Face Balm - Estimated Value $5 (Buy a 2.5oz full size for $36)

I'm not really sure why this is called a balm; it's much more of a gel-like lotion. It sinks in fast and leaves a shine-free finish while hydrating and soothing skin. John prefers to use something like this to soften his beard rather than oil since it's easier to apply. The lavender/spearmint/rosemary scent isn't his favorite though and I agree that it is a bit strong for the face.

Verdict: John's January Birchbox Man included lots of great products that he is really enjoying. He has a thing for lip balm and soap, so those are certainly winners. But he's surprisingly keen on the SPF too. He received two full-sized products which is awesome! I estimate a value of about $22.75 for this box. That's about half of the value he has previously received, but if he finds great products he will use (and that will help him in the long run), I'm counting it as a win.
