Pearlesque Box January 2019 Review

This month’s featured brand is Modicum, started by Monica Behan after harnessing the power of plant chemistry and essential oils to heal herself.

We work directly with many farmers and are committed to using raw materials that are free of pesticides that are not only harmful to our health but the health of the planet. We are dedicated to doing small batches with great care.

They also contribute to organizations 40Ocean who helps clean the single-use plastics from the ocean every day, as well as the Jefferson Country SPCA, a non-profit no-kill animal shelter.

The opposite side of the info card details the included items, how to use them, their price, and a #pearltip.

Modicum Essential Cleanser, 0.34 oz. travel size – Estimated Value $9.52, Listed Value $13.00 (Buy a 1 oz. bottle for $28.00)

My my my, I really like this cleanser! I wish it were full-size, but you can’t win them all. As you can see above, there is the slightest bit of somethin’-somethin’ in this clear liquid cleanser and let me tell you, it smells DIVINE. Honestly, has to be one of my favorites in a while even though I can’t put my finger on it while reading through the ingredients. Maybe the Sea Buckthorn?  Maybe the Black Cumin? It has the slightest tingle to it and after rinsing, I feel incredibly clean and my skin is velvety soft.

Modicum No. 3 Essential Serum, 1 oz. full size – Retail Value $65.00

While I can’t lie about suffering from a bit of serum fatigue, I also think it’s a great “problem” to have. I simply adore trying different skin care items and about two years ago I never would have thought I’d use so many oils and serums on my face! Now I can’t live without them. This one is packed with ingredients like helichrysum essential oil, sea buckthorn berry oil, black cumin seed oil, and rose. I am excited about some of these that are super new to me! They were all chosen (along with the others) for their medicinal properties. I’m lucky to naturally have pretty great skin, but this is supposed to be great for common issues like acne, psoriasis, and eczema. I will say that this one is quite oily and a little bit goes a looong way. It has a light scent that is held up by the pumpkin and sunflower oil. It took my skin a little longer than normal to soak this up, so I think I’ll be using it more at night although it can be used in the morning as well.

Modicum Birch Tree Water Spritz, 1 oz. full size – Retail Value $22.00

Strangely enough, I got this exact product in another clean beauty box this month as well. I ended up really liking it due to the fine mist it sprays as well as the benefits it says to have. The birch tree water doesn’t come through at all int he scent and I can mostly just pick up the rosewater it’s mixed with. It also includes aloe and all of these things feel lovely on my face and should help protect and rejuvenate it when it’s dry and dull.

Verdict: This month’s Pearlesque Box featured new-to-me brand, Modicum and while I wish the cleanser was full size, I really enjoyed it along with the birch water spritz. I’m still on the fence about the serum as it’s a little much for me, but the unique ingredients sure piqued my interest! This subscription continues to be a favorite of the clean beauty boxes and I always look forward to the next brand!

  1. This is one of the very first subscription boxes I subscribed to and is still a favorite of mine. Month after month, I have NEVER been disappointed. I have NEVER given any products I received in this box, to someone else. And I have NEVER considered canceling this subscription. (although I did pause it for 3 months because of financial reasons, I came back to this sub as quickly as I possibly could). I will continue to subscribe to Pearlesque Beauty Box for a LONG time to come.

  2. The great scent is the Sea Buckthorn! I love it too. I’ve had another product with the same natural scent and a bit of an exfoliating effect and it was similar but not as high quality.
Pearlesque is my favorite skin care sub box, because the products they select are always so great, the sizes are generous to full size, and I love trying new things as well. 🙂

Really fun box this month, and your review showed that. 😉

    • That’s wild because I recently got a lotion with sea buckthorn and was not into it. Maybe it was just too heavily scented?
      Thanks for reading, Lily!

  3. Marne, the great scent is indeed the Sea Buckthorn! I bought a bottle of shower gel on Amazon with Sea Buckthorn as a main ingredient. It was also a botanical product with ” clean” natural ingredients. Same scent, and I truly loved it. I think the little scrubby texture may be a part of the Sea Buckthorn, as both products I’ve had featuring the ingredient both had a teeny bit of natural exfoliant in them.

I thought this was a great box, and I think all the Pearlesque boxes are extremely good values and the curation is tops.

  4. Very nice, descriptive review. I was so sad to miss this box. I subscribed and will start with February. No more missing out for me…! 🙂

    • I just subscribed, too! I am excited for the Hawaiian skincare products coming next month.

      • Me, too! 🙂
