KnitCrate Membership December 2018 Review

Knitcrate Yarn Subscription December 2018 - Booklet Cover Top

KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet, December 2018 - Retail Value $40.00

The pattern booklet included a download code so that you could add the PDF version to your Ravelry library. When I used the code it listed the booklet as having a value of $40, but as of publication, the booklet is not currently for sale as a separate item.

Knitcrate Yarn Subscription December 2018 - Theme Pages Top

The theme for this month was “Handmade Holiday,” and the inspiration page in the booklet is just adorable! I love this crafty take on the holidays and think it’s great that the theme this month feels festive without being too overly Christmas-y. Bring on all the cozy yarn that reminds you of twinkle lights and homemade cookies!

The yarn featured this month is a super bulky weight one, and is 100% Peruvian Highland wool. There were four colorway options you could have received - Blue Spruce (a cool toned evergreen), Clementine (a soft orange), Triple Lux (a pale icy blue), or Black Cherry (a deep magenta).

The two patterns included embrace the idea of making a cozy accessory for the holidays! The knit pattern is a textured cowl and the crochet pattern is a fun hat. Both projects are designed to be quick to make - perfect for a last minute holiday gift!

The booklet also contains a third pattern for knitted socks to go along with this month's Sock Membership box.

The booklet also has bios for the designers behind both of the patterns. I always enjoy reading these behind-the-scenes descriptions!

Knitcrate Yarn Subscription December 2018 - Blue Skeins Top

Vidalana Heathered Chunky by KnitCrate, in color Triple Lux - Retail Value $48.00 ($24.00 each)

How gorgeous is this yarn? I love that KnitCrate sent a super chunky yarn for this month. This yarn is 100% wool, and it feels much more rustic than other yarn that I’ve received from the company. I could tell right away after holding it that I wouldn’t be able to wear something made from this yarn super close to my skin, as I tend to be sensitive to super wooly yarns. The benefit of this type of yarn, though, is that anything made from it will be extremely warm!

Each skein is 60 yards for 100 grams. You can see in this photo how thick each strand is!

Knitcrate Yarn Subscription December 2018 - Pin Top

KnitCrate sent a cute enamel pin out to all subscribers this month as a holiday gift! This yarn ball and needles pin is perfect to add as decoration to your knitting bag!

Because of the rustic wool properties of this yarn, I knew that I personally would not be able to wear a scarf or cowl made out of it, since my skin is fairly sensitive. If you are lucky to not have sensitive skin, I think the knitted cowl pattern this month is very cute and looked very simple to follow! I always suggest to newer knitters that they start with bulkier yarns, also, since they are easier to work with. This would be a great box for someone who is a beginner knitter!

Knitcrate Yarn Subscription December 2018 - Prepaired Headband Top

I thought this yarn was perfect for one of my all-time favorite patterns, the Basic Headband by Little Red Knits. It’s a free pattern on Ravelry, and it makes for a very quick and adorable project! I know the basics for crochet, but am by no means an experienced crocheter, and I find this pattern very easy to follow!

I’m so happy with my finished headband! I loved this icy blue-gray color so much, and I’m glad I was able to come up with a pattern that would allow me to wear something made out of this yarn even with my sensitive skin. This headband used up about 2/3rds of one of my skeins of yarn.

Knitcrate Yarn Subscription December 2018 - Orange Skeins Top

KnitCrate also sent us one of the other possible colors, Clementine, to show in our review. It’s a beautiful warm orange color. Each box will contain two skeins of one of the possible color options - all four of the colors for this month are so beautiful, it’s hard for me to pick which is my favorite!

Verdict: I thought this was the perfect winter KnitCrate! I loved that they sent a super bulky yarn for this time of year - it’s perfect for quick knits as gifts or for yourself! I thought the colors offered this month were all so gorgeous and went really well together. Although the patterns included in this month weren’t exactly right for me, I was still able to make a project that I loved and will get a lot of use out of.

A few other things that are good to know: if you follow KnitCrate on Instagram or join their Ravelry group, they reveal spoilers at the end of each month (usually around the 20th) before the subscription renews on the first. If you are pickier about what fibers you like to use or want to avoid certain colors, these would be great to check out. Otherwise, you won’t know what the theme, yarn, or patterns will be before they renew your subscription for the month. (But if you sign up during the month of November, you’ll see the November yarns and patterns before you join, so you WILL know what your first box will be).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes - if you sign up anytime during the month of December, your first box will be the December box (while supplies last).

Value Breakdown: For $24.99, we received two skeins of yarn and three knitting and crochet patterns, with a total retail value estimated around $88. I think this is a very reasonable price for what you receive, since the high-end premium yarn is usually around $25-35 per skein in a local yarn store, and most patterns on Ravelry are $5-10 each.

At $24.99, here’s approximately what you are paying for each item (not including the pin):

  • Vidalana Heathered Chunky Yarn - $13.64 (or $6.82 per skein)
  • Pattern Booklet - $11.36
