Field to Cup Tea Discoverer December 2018 Review
The information insert includes a description of each tea, steeping instructions, and a place for you to record your thoughts on each brew
Also included were 9 lovely disposable tea bags for the perfect steep!
Ginger Bark Black Tea, 20g- Buy 85g for $8.48
I love anything with pink peppercorn and love that it was blended with ginger. This brew was good, but I would have enjoyed it more without the cocoa shells. They mellow out what would be a really bright and spicy tea. There is absolutely a finish with a significant ginger heat and since the ginger in this blend is sugared, it has a barely-there hint of sweetness. I added just a wee bit of raw sugar and nothing else.
Mmmm. This is my type of brew! Mild, toasty, and natural. The bag remarks on its floral notes, but it is more grassy than flowery to me. I love both so this suits my purposes just fine. I highly recommend letting this delicate Oolong go solo in your cup, sans sweetener or cream, which would easily drown out its flavor.
Smoky Keemun Black Tea, 20g- Buy 85g for $31.79
This is one smoky tea! I like this type of thing, but do find I prefer it with a little sweetness. This tea brewed strongly and was a rich amber color and had an almost malty fragrance. It is bold enough to also have the cream/milk of your choice added, along with your favorite sweetener. I chose raw sugar. Be sure to not over brew this one, it would absolutely go bitter.
Cacao Spice Chai Herbal Blend, 20g- Buy 85g for $23.74
This bag was quickly snatched up by my chai loving husband, Will. He enjoyed the blend of chai spices with the warm cocoa shell finish. He recommends adding a splash of milk and some raw sugar. He also tried it cold, though he loved it much more steaming hot. He described the flavor as complex, which I would credit to the rooibos, which gives this tea a fantastic backbone.
Organic Irish Breakfast Black Tea, 40g- Buy 85g for $18.99
I love a highly caffeinated breakfast tea and this is the big bag in our box this month. It will certainly go to good use! I am not a coffee drinker and I have been actively giving up energy drinks, so tea has become my new morning lifeline. This tea brews up fast so be mindful not to leave your bag in too long, or prepare for bitterness. Feel free to add in your favorite milk and sugar because its super bold flavor is not masked by additives but, in my opinion, enhanced by them.
BONUS: Organic Vanilla Matcha Green Tea, 7g – Buy 85g for $15.88
Matcha is one of my favorite scents as well as tastes! This little bonus sample was a home run for me. It is a presweetened ready to drink powder that you simply add hot water to (or almond milk in my case). It is mild, delicious, and just sweet enough! I would love to see this in future boxes.
Verdict: Field to Cup always has a good mix of familiar tastes and new exciting flavors. The only tea I wasn’t totally in love with this month was the chai, but I don’t like chai as a general rule. On the other hand, Will cannot get enough of it and is more than happy to make sure this tea does not go to waste. My favorite this month was by far the little bonus of Matcha, but I also really enjoyed the Toasty Goddess and Keemun. I always really enjoy this subscription because it sends teas I would not ever reach for myself and is also very educational. As always, this box is beautiful and a joy to open, with the tiny details and included info card.
