Face Mask Alchemy is a monthly DIY mask subscription that sends you everything you need to create a new at-home face mask experience. Hawaiian-born subscription box lover Marie began "hacking" face masks on YouTube and would look up all the ingredients to see if she could recreate it, and thus, FMA was born.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The Subscription Box: Face Mask Alchemy

The Cost: $10.88/month with free shipping!

The Products: A months supply of dry face mask, a unique oil or other potion, a Hawaiian honey stick and bamboo spoon

Face Mask Alchemy December 2018 Review

You'll find an info sheet in your Face Mask Alchemy delivery which goes over what I received, the ingredients, how to use/make it and some extra tips.

Everything comes in a mesh pouch to keep it together.

Bamboo Spoon

You'll always receive a bamboo spoon in your package to get things stirred up!

Hawaiian Honey Stick

You will also find a Hawaiian honey stick in each one that you can choose to add to the mask (or just some tea)!

Honi Honi Face Mask Powder, 0.5 oz.

Marie sounded very excited about this month's mask due to the inclusion of Hawaiian sandalwood powder. I love the smell of sandalwood, so I am on-board for this one. It has a kaolin clay base like many of her masks, and in addition to the sandalwood, has an all-organic lineup of honey powder, coconut milk powder, hibiscus powder, and Hawaiian turmeric.

Fruit Cake Oil Blend

The oil this month is made with wild-harvested watermelon seed oil, cold-pressed prickly pear seed oil, wild-crafter passion fruit seed oil, and organic pomegranate extraction. The benefits are listed as a lotion-like texture from the watermelon, anti-oxidant rich from the pomegranate and prickly pear, and skin-balancing from the passion fruit. All of this sounds lovely to me. I'll definitely be using this alone later in addition to adding it to the mask.

I began with the dry Honi Honi powder.

This time, I decided to use rose water instead of the usual tap water since I just got a large bottle of it from another box. I have to say- using the spray to add it to the powder gave me way more control than trying to pour tap water in. I think I'll be using rose water from now on! It really didn't take much to get it wet.

Next, I added several shakes of the included fruit cake oil. I ended up worrying that I wouldn't have enough mask, so I went ahead and added more powder, and then a few more drops to get the amount you see here.

I then added about 1/4 of the honey stick. On the info sheet, Marie mentions that if you have dry skin due to the cold weather (um, yes) to use both the oil and honey to boost hydration and conditioning for the skin.

This is a much more creamy consistency than the paste but I am liking how it turned out.

Here's a swatch of it on my hand.

I used the bamboo spoon along with my fingertips to spread the mask onto my clean face. Once I had it on, I could clearly see turmeric ingredient but knew it wasn't enough to stain my skin. After about 10 minutes, even though it didn't turn a lighter shade like clay masks tend to do and get more "crusty", I could tell it was dry. I think the addition of honey and perhaps the oil as well made this seem less dry overall and more like the consistency of a peel-off mask. I splashed water on my face and then continued to remove the mask by lightly massaging and adding more water. Eventually, with a cloth, I removed the rest. Wow- my face felt super clean (a little tight) but almost as though I had already added moisturizer! My skin felt incredibly soft and well-hydrated. I think this is a winning combo for me!

Verdict: I'm so glad I used rose water in addition to the included honey + oil with this month's Face Mask Alchemy. The results were amazing and I love that I know all of the ingredients that went into it which didn't contain any weird chemicals. This is such a fun subscription and always gets me excited about natural skincare!

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, but sign up today to get January as your first!

Value Breakdown: For $10.88 I received enough ingredients to make a custom face mask with some leftover, as well as a bamboo spoon and plenty of the honey stick left. There was also most of the oil still to use as an after-mask treatment.

I love this sub. She gets powders I can’t find here. I’m totally bummed she’s done! Maybe she’ll change her mind!

Hey Heather! Subscribers get charged on the 25th of each month. I get an email the day before as a reminder. 🙂

Heather

I too was about to sub. This looks so cool. I wish i had heard of this box sooner. Maybe i will still sub for the remaining 2-3 months. We still have January and February at least.

I’m thinking about trying this subscription… it seems really good. I want to focus more on skincare this year of my subscription boxes.

Marie mentioned that she’ll be discontinuing FMA with either the February or March box (she said February a few times, but then said “or March I think” really quickly). Sad! She’s discontinuing it to focus on creating soaps and her skincare line she’s always wanted to create (plus she has a 3rd child on the way too!).

Oh no! Somehow I missed that. Thanks for letting me know, Luna. Where did she talk about it?

Oh no! I was hoping to subscribe at some point
