Vegan Cuts Snack Box November 2018 Review
I think Vegan Cuts has really stepped things up lately in terms of snack box curation. Let’s see what they sent for November:
The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box.
There were some coupons this month (there usually are). One was for an item not in the box (but it’s appeared in past months).
Bean Smash Chipotle Black Bean (2 oz)
This is apparently out in stores but not available online yet. Basically, you add water, microwave, and then let it sit for a few minutes. It looked kind of sad and pathetic after the initial microwaving but after the waiting period, it actually looked really good, and it tasted pretty good too. I see there are some other varieties available and I would be happy to receive those in future months. I was a fan of this.
Vegetarian Express Parma Zaan Sprinkles (sample) – Buy 6 oz for $8.99
The main ingredient here is blanched almond meal. There’s some nutritional yeast, sea salt, and onion, but it is weirdly flavorless. You’d have to dump the entire jar on your food to make it work. I think the ratio of almond meal to other ingredients is not right.
Popped Chickpeatos in Zesty Ranch (0.8 oz) – Buy 4 oz for $3.49
I’ve had these from food subscription boxes in several flavors but I have to say, the savory flavors are the best, and this does a passable job at mimicking a ranch flavor despite being dairy free (“ranch” is really “buttermilk with herbs”). These have a good consistency for me; I think the green pea and chickpea flour really help with that.
Mozaics Veggie and Potato Chips in Salsa (3.5 oz) – Buy 8, 1.25 oz Bags for $14.99 (found here for $7.49)
These have various veggie and grain flours as a base with a bit of spice (jalapeno, paprika, onion, etc.) added in. They made an excellent delivery vehicle for the bean dip shown above. These have an average sodium level for a chip but actually quite a bit more fiber than similar items (that’s a good thing, and it doesn’t interfere with the texture).
Endangered Species Chocolate Smooth Dark Chocolate with Salted Peanuts (3 oz) – Retail Value $3.49 (found here for $2.83)
Having just made my way through the Vegan Cuts Chocolate Treasure Chest, at first I was like, “oh no, not more” but this was pretty good. It actually was smooth, as advertised (not quite like milk chocolate, but more than other dark chocolates) and the peanuts were a nice touch.
Rise Brewing Co. Nitro Blood Orange Coffee (7 fl oz) – Buy 12 Cans for $34.99
I am not a coffee drinker but I like blood orange flavor so I opened this up and sniffed it and whew, but it smelled strongly of coffee (which I suppose it should). So I handed the can off to my husband who tasted it and was not a fan. He says that fruit and coffee don’t mix (and he drinks a couple of cups of coffee a day so I trust his opinion over mine in this instance).
Doughbar Crispy Bar Original (2.05 oz) – Buy 12 for $33.99
Being a vegetarian, one thing I haven’t had in ages (OK, in over 25 years) is a Rice Krispie treat because those are made with marshmallows and marshmallow have gelatin. I would not say this tastes exactly like my memory of Rice Krispie treats, but it is similar in a lot of ways (but with a lot of added protein, which makes these way more nutritious).
Pressed Kind in Apple Cherry Chia (1.2 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $17.88
I’ve had these before because someone ordered them for the break room at work. They’re what you might expect from a pressed fruit bar. The chia work here (in some products, it can be kind of gritty, but it really isn’t in these). Please note that most KIND products are not vegan (many contain honey and a few contain dairy) but this particular product line is vegan.
Neat Cinnamon Pecan Pancakes Baking Mix (10.8 oz) – Buy 6 Bags for $36.44
I need some advice here so if you have any tips, please reply in the comments. This company also makes a brownie mix, which came in the Vegan Cuts Chocolate Treasure Chest. I followed the directions for that one exactly and the brownies never set. Like they were just mushy pudding even after extended baking. I’m a little afraid that’s going to happen with these pancakes, too, so I’m just wondering if anyone has tips for how to make these work. (Neat is an egg substitute. I’ve tried it before in a quickbread and that was fine. I don’t know if the brownies are an anomaly or if something else is going on.)
Purely Inspired Organic Protein in French Vanilla (1.27 oz) – Buy 1.5 lbs for $19.99
This has pea and brown rice protein as the base but it doesn’t taste beany. It also has some fruits and veggies but I think they’re in pretty small amounts because they don’t really affect the appearance. This is sweetened with cane sugar but it is actually pretty low in sugar, anyway. If you are looking for a plant-based protein powder without artificial sweeteners, this may be the way to go. I tried it in a smoothie and it worked quite well.
Cusa Tea Premium Instant Tea Taster Pack – Retail Value $2.99
I approached this product with trepidation. I’ve been burned recently by other “instant tea” (basically ended up with a lot of gunk at the bottom of my mug). But. This dissolved very well and there was no residue at the bottom of the cup. It was good tea, too! This has one each of English breakfast, oolong, and mango green tea. (I drank this at work so there are no photos of the brewed tea.)
Tru-Nut Powdered Peanut Butter (0.42 oz) – Buy 6.7 oz for $5.99
This is the month of powdered peanut butter for me. I’ve received several different brands in several different subscription boxes. I’m not complaining because it’s a type of product I always keep in the pantry. I do not mix it with water and make sandwiches (which a lot of people recommend) but instead add it to smoothies, pancakes, etc. If you have had PB2 or PBFit, this is very similar.
Verdict: This month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box had 12 items for an average value per item of about $1.91. A lot of the items and/or brands were new to me. The bean dip was a big hit, the instant tea was a pleasant surprise, and of course, I thought the chocolate bar was delicious. Although the coffee drink didn’t work for me and I didn’t find the fake Parmesan to have much flavor, most of the items were pretty good, and you can’t please every person with every single item, and the overall ratio of successes to failures was decent.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be December’s box, but some of the products may be available from the Vegan Cuts shop.
Value Breakdown: This box costs $22.95 + free US shipping, which means that each of the 12 items in the box has an average cost of $1.91.
