Lipstick Junkie November 2018 Review
The included info card has information about each of the items included, along with the retail values and a description of the theme. This month’s theme was a generalized “fall season” theme and was curated with colder weather in mind. The box contained one full-size lip crayon, a lip scrub, and a 4-shade lipstick palette.
Starlook’s Velveteen Lip Crayon in shade “Blue Blood” – Retail Value $15.00
This line of matte lip shades are designed to go on smoothly and provide a pop of color in your makeup look. The shade included in the box was a deep plum purple color.
The pigment in this crayon is great! It glides on smoothly and is super moisturizing. I love lip crayons for their ease of use, and always have several in my purse at all times! Lipstick Junkie’s main tagline is “not for the faint of heart,” so I understand why they would include a purple lipstick in their subscription box – but this shade is not going to be for everyone. See below for my swatches and how I used this lipstick for a more wearable look.
Nugg Beauty Sugar Lip Scrub & Smoother in “Vanilla Bean”, 0.24oz – Retail Value $9.99
Since the theme of this box is cold weather, I love that they included a lip scrub! Most of us can relate to the problem of dry, flaky lips come wintertime. This product contains all natural and vegan ingredients, which is great! The packaging is very cute, with mirrored pink on the outside.
The scrub has a heavy grit to it, which is common with sugar scrubs. If you have very sensitive skin you may want to be extra gentle when using it. After I wiped away the excess scrub, my lips felt very moisturized and soft. A thin layer of balm remains after you use the product, which I loved because some lip scrubs can be very drying after you use them!
The product is very sticky, which is nice because it only sticks where you want it to! My only complaint is that I had a hard time getting the scrub off of my fingers after applying it – I had to wash my hands several times to get all of the stickiness off of them. Although the round ball packaging makes this product easy to toss into your purse, I don’t see this being a product you would use while on-the-go due to the stickiness and mess associated with it.
The packaging of this palette is very sleek and compact, which is great for taking with you! The palette snaps open and closed easily.
The four shades included aren’t named, but from left to right include a rosy pink, a bright orange, a hot pink, and a true red. For the low price point of this palette, I was impressed with the pigmentation and quality of the lipsticks. The two pinks and red colors are very creamy, and it was easy to transfer product from the palette onto the brush. The orange color was a different consistency than the others, and it was harder to get the pigment to transfer to the brush.
The brush included is actually pretty decent quality, which surprised me, as brushes included in makeup palettes tend to be not very great. I didn’t have any bristles fall out during my testing process, and the brush kept its shape well. If you are someone who loves to always have a bold lip color, I like that this palette allows you to experiment with mixing shades together to create different looks! I tend to be more of a “swipe and go” type of girl, so having to pull out a palette and look in the mirror to apply lipstick misses the mark for me, but I appreciate that Lipstick Junkie is dedicated to showing us a variety of different lip products
The top swatch is the Blue Blood lip crayon, and underneath are the four Coastal Scents palette colors.
Here I am wearing the purple lip crayon. I applied just one sheer coat of the color and blended the product out with my finger. I was surprised at how wearable this look is! Blended out, the color became a very pretty shade of lilac. Blue-toned lipsticks do make your teeth and whites of your eyes appear brighter and whiter (always a bonus!), and I can see wearing this lip color for a fun, unique look!
In this photo, I first applied the purple lip crayon in a couple heavy swipes (I couldn’t bring myself to take a photo of the saturated purple by itself! It’s was way too much for me personally). I then used the red shade included in the palette on top of the purple, and I love the result! The combination of the two shades created a vampy dark red, which is a great twist on the classic red lip. I think this lip color look is perfect for the holiday season! I did experience a little bit of feathering with the red color, so in the future when I use this lipstick again I would use a lip liner pencil first.
Verdict: This month’s Lipstick Junkie has a value of $34.94. Since the subscription costs only $18 a month, I think that’s a good value to be able to try multiple new products every month, especially since all the products are full-size. I also think it’s a great way to try new things you wouldn’t typically pick up for yourself – for example, I would never purchase a purple lipstick on my own, but I love that this box made me think of layering it to create new shades out of lipsticks I already own!
