Irish Taste Club October 2018 Review

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Info Card 1

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Info Card 2

Irish Taste Club includes an information sheet that provides tidbits about each product and its producer. There is also a special note from the owners, Pauline and Tom. The friendly, conversational tone of the info sheet was very sweet! It was easy to feel a connection to everyone involved in making this box come together.

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Soda Bread 2

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Soda Bread 3

The Big Red Kitchen Brown Soda Bread Mix, 300g - Retail Value $3.59 (€2.95)

This twine-tied package was so cute! I knew I had to make the soda bread first, so I’d have a vehicle for all the jam, honey, and sauces that came in the box. It was easy enough to whip together; I just combined the bread mix with 1 and 1/4 cups of milk and one egg. While it was baking, my apartment smelled so heavenly. It was nice and crusty on the outside, and soft on the inside. Hearty, textured, and mild, it was really enjoyable. I was excited to spread some of this month’s many toppings over it. More on those later. As the bread baked, I cracked into the other treats.

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Macaroon Bars 1

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Macaroon Bars 2

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Macaroon Bars 3

Ballyshiel Macaroon Bars, 90g

On the info sheet, Pauline and Tom challenge the reader to find a nicer macaroon anywhere in the world, and you know what? I don’t think I can. These macaroon bars were so GOOD! I can only describe them as a gourmet version of Samoas Girl Scout cookies. Sweet chocolate, a little bit of rice crisp, and lovely coconut—these were to die for. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited over sweets!

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - West Cork Cookies 1

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - West Cork Cookies 3

West Cork Biscuit Company Baci Di Dama, 175g - Retail Value $5.53 (€4.55)

“Baci Di Dama” translates to “lady’s kisses” in Italian. Crafted from locally-sourced ingredients and produced in small batches, these little cookies promised a light almond flavor and a center of dark Belgian chocolate. They definitely delivered! The cookie itself had a nice chew to it while still being light and a little crumbly, and the Belgian chocolate center was deliciously decadent. I loved these, and if I don’t immediately scarf down the entire box, then I’ll excitedly share them with friends.

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Hot Chocolate 1

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Hot Chocolate 3

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Hot Chocolate 4

Àine Handmade Hot Chocolate Swirl Stick, 40g - Retail Value $2.06 (€1.70)

What a fun take on hot chocolate! Instead of a brown mystery powder, this chocolate swirl stick combines fresh, pure, and natural ingredients like Irish butter and cream, as well as the best cocoa solids in the world. Àine’s Handmade Chocolate has also won no less than 21 Great Taste Awards (essentially the Oscars of the food industry). I couldn’t wait to try this. After warming 3/4 cup (200ml) of milk on the stove, I poured the milk into my Mister Rogers mug, and let the swirling begin. It felt so gourmet to move the stick around and watch the hot chocolate appear. It took a few minutes for all of the chocolate to melt, but it was worth the wait. Another winner! I would definitely purchase these sticks in bulk, with most to give as gifts to loved ones, and a few to keep for myself. So, so good.

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Salted Butterscotch 1

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Salted Butterscotch 2

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Salted Butterscotch 3

The Big Red Kitchen Salted Butterscotch Sauce, 220g - Retail Value $5.47 (€4.50)

Wow, this sauce was incredible. I tested a tiny bit from the knife I used to spread on the soda bread before eating those two things together, and it about knocked my socks off. You know when a cartoon character falls in love, and their eyes turn into hearts and blow out of their head? Yeah, that was me with this sauce. It’s sweet, rich, and a true butterscotch dream. Plus, it was great on the soda bread. You can really tell it was made with a lot of love and care. The hits really do keep coming with this box!

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Raspberry Preserves 1

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Raspberry Preserves 2

Mileeven Raspberry & Irish Poitin Preserve, 225g - Retail Value $8.99

This was so fresh and full of flavor! Once again, very delicious on the soda bread. I wasn’t sure what poitin was, so a quick search revealed it’s a traditional distilled Irish beverage. Berries and booze? Count me in.

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Manuka Honey 1

Irish Taste Club October 2018 - Manuka Honey 2

Mileeven Pure Honey, 340g - Retail Value $4.37 (€3.59)

Of all the treats in this month’s box, I was most excited by this pure honey. Truth be told, I’m a honey fiend. It had a nice, natural sweetness that made it my favorite topping for the soda bread. The jar was also quite large and will last a long time, so I’m very happy to add it to my pantry!

Verdict: Irish Taste Club far exceeded my expectations! I had no idea there was so much culinary talent in Ireland, and it was an absolute pleasure to explore the craft behind each artisan product. This box would make for an incredible gift, as the items are very high quality, and Irish Taste Club offers the convenience of a one-time box purchase. The info sheet had such a charming sense of humor and was a wonderful, personable guide for introducing each product. It was difficult to pick a favorite, but for the sake of review, I’ll go with the Ballyshiel macaroon bars and the salted butterscotch sauce. Overall, I loved my time with Irish Taste Club, and would definitely recommend it.

Value Breakdown: This box is $49 a month with free shipping. I received a total of seven items, which is an average of $7. For the superb quality and amazing taste of each, I think it’s totally worth it, especially considering the huge jar of specialty honey that’s now hanging out in my pantry.

First I want to say great review! You’re very good at describing the items and I like that you’re giving more info to those who ask for it in the comments.

I’m not sure if this is appropriate but I LOVE your Mr. Rogers mug! Can I ask where you got it? I’d love to get 1 for myself and it would be a great surprise for my best friend. We’ve been besties since kindergarten and watched his show together all the time as kids lol

Thanks so much for your positive feedback, Sarah! It’s very much appreciated. This was easily one of my favorite subscription box experiences to date, so it’s a pleasure to share the love.

As for the mug, it was a next-level thrift store find from my mom. The copyright is from ’96, so with that detail in mind, you may be able to scope something out on eBay or the like. Happy hunting!

I wish I could afford this one but $50+ a month is too steep for me n

I am so sad we can’t get this box, I have never wanted a food box more. I need to look at their website immediately!

Reply ButtonReply

Savannah

You should definitely check out their website, Pamela! As a friendly suggestion, you could create your own version of this box with the items you covet the most. I was able to link almost all of the items to sites where you can purchase them individually, with the exception of the macaroon sticks. All hope is not lost!

Hi Savannah,

Already did! I After I left the comment I went on their website to see if I could buy some of their items listed. Unfortunately not, so I then went to the websites of the companies that make the products so I could buy there. I’m interested in subscribing but will wait a couple of months to see what they have. I’m really attracted to this box because of the sweets so if the other boxes don’t have this sort of stuff (sweets/jams/breads) then I won’t subscribe. But I will buy these items featured because they look amazing.

Pamela

Savannah, do you know if we can change our names on our comments and NOT have it mess with anything, including our swap page. Or can we change both maybe? I ask because there is at least 1 other Pamela and I read the post above by a different Pamela and I was like, “what! did I say that about this post” LOL. It’s not a huge deal, but I’d like to change it and am not sure if changing anything makes a mess of the account. TIA

Yurena

I just wish they would ship to other European countries too 🙁

Michelle

So disappointed this isn’t available. Your review made my mouth water. I am sad

Savannah

Oh no, don’t be sad, Michelle! You could try buying these treats individually. I was able to link almost all of them to sites where they can be purchased, with the exception of the macaroon bars. Highly recommend the soda bread mix, the butterscotch sauce, and the hot chocolate sticks if you decide to go that route!

I have never wanted a food box more. Everything looks great. Super bummed I can’t get this exact box but I may need to subscribe to this.

Reply ButtonReply

Savannah

I definitely think it’s worth a shot, Wendy. I’m still pretty green to the world of subscription boxes, having only tried a handful of different ones in the past few months, but this one ranked toward the tip top of my list. Give it a go—you may just love it as much as I did!

Pamela

I feel the same way. I know if I subscribe I’ll get items not as yummy looking as these, lol. This box looks amazing.

Vanessa

Based on past reviews, it looks like they do send quality products every month, so I have high hopes for this sub!

Vanessa

As a person of Irish descent and a serious bread girl, this box is calling my name. Putting it at the top of my list for the new year!

Savannah

That’s great, Vanessa! I had so much fun with this review, and I hope your experience with the sub is just as—if not more—enjoyable.
