Birchbox’s The Holiday Nail Care Kit Review
An info card was provided that details each item in this kit.
Noir Holographic Bag
I don’t think Birchbox could have picked a better bag to pack this kit into- I absolutely adore it. It catches the light beautifully and is spacious inside. This is definitely my new main makeup bag.
Tweezerman Pink Chevron Nail File – Listed Value $5 (linked to the same product in a different style)
I can’t tell you where but I have used the Tweezerman Filemate nail file before. I like the grit on these for filing off a jagged edge or smoothing out my shape, and it doesn’t tear into my cuticles when I am using it.
Avène Cold Cream Concentrated Hand Cream, Full-Size! Retail Value $15
This is on the pricier end for hand creams, and while I generally like the skincare Avene makes this hand cream isn’t for me. It took a long time to soak in and left my palms sticky, and I wasn’t a fan of the smell (that reminded me of a hospital). I also am not impressed with the ingredients list – while it is relatively short it contains mineral oil and aluminum. Thank you, next.
EXO Supply Co. Pure Remover Wipes, 2 wipes – Estimated Value $2.40 (buy a box of 10 for $12)
This is an acetone-free nail polish removing wipe that is also scented with lavender essential oil. I don’t know if I believe that these wipes can remove gel polishes, but it removed my regular nail polish with a little bit of elbow grease. Even though it took longer than my regular nail polish remover since this isn’t acetone based the wipe didn’t dry out while I was using it, enabling me to remove all of my polish.
Adesse New York Nail & Cuticle Energizer, Full-Size! Retail Value $18
Well I don’t think it is possible to have a more gorgeous cuticle oil, do you? This energizer is packed with guarana extract, peppermint oil, green tea extract, and aloe extract. It is has a light peppermint scent that I enjoy and it is designed to nourish your cuticles and promote natural nail growth. The only thing I would disagree with is the instructions- it says to apply before you polish your nails, but applying oils before nail polish means the polish will not adhere to your nail bed the way it should (and thus lead to chipping and peeling). I applied this after polishing my nails, and I was happy with the light hydration.
Smith & Cult Nailed Lacquer – Kundalini Hustle, Full-Size! Retail Value $18
This is a gorgeous true red crème polish that was almost fully opaque with one coat. If you are searching for a classic red to wear this holiday season (or any season!), look no further. Also, isn’t Smith & Cults packaging just gorgeous? And if you weren’t aware, the metal cap can be pulled off to give you better control of the brush.
Smith & Cult Nailed Lacquer – Glass Souls, Full-Size! Retail Value $18
Glass Souls is a clear polish with large and small silver glitter suspended within. This could probably be built up to full opacity with three coats, but I recommend using this on top of another color (silver/light grey if you’re going for that full glitter look without having thick nail polish). Smith & Cults nail polish formulas are 8-free and this one picks up glitter easily so you don’t have to fish around the bottle.
Here are Kundalini Hustle and Glass Souls used together. I free-handed some half-moons at the base of my nails with Glass Souls, and I used liquid latex to keep the glitter from covering the entire nail.
HUM Nutrition Killer Nails® Supplements, 60 days supply – Retail Value $20
These are a plant-based biotin supplement that promotes nail, cuticle, and hair growth. You only have to take one a day, so this bottle is a 2-month supply.
STARSKIN® Hollywood Hand Model™ Nourishing Double-Layer Hand Mask Gloves – Retail Value $10
This hand mask is made with shea butter and 16 different botanicals and oils. I try to wear gloves like these once every week or so because nail polish remover is hard on my cuticles, and this was a great hydrating treat for my hands after a weekend of swatching nail polishes.
The Verdict: Wow! Other than the two nail polish remover wipes, everything in this box is full-sized! Everything other than the hand cream was a hit for me, and I am so happy to have two new Smith & Cult polishes to add to my collection. If you have a nail polish lover in your life I think this Birchbox kit would be an amazing gift for them – or for anyone who just loves beauty products. Value-wise I calculated a total value of $106.40. That is a little lower than Birchbox’s promised value of $112, but I think it is close enough.
