Astral Box October 2018 Review
Welcome to this month’s Astral Box! This is my first time reviewing this box, and I am incredibly excited because it has a reputation for super unique items and incredibly thoughtful curation. Included was a beautiful postcard sizes sheet with a lovely picture and quote on the front, and a list of the included items on the back. This month’s theme is Yogi, which I loved immediately because I have been practicing yoga for around 4 years now. Note that its values are listed in New Zealand dollars (NZD).
Tibetan Singing Bowl – Listed Retail Value $34.69 USD ($52 NZD) Similar found here, minus carrying bag.
This is a WOW item. I have been to many classes where the teacher used a singing bowl as a meditation tool, and I have always found them so beautiful! This is a little guy, about 3.5 inches across which makes it perfect for travel. It has a beautiful silk pedestal and a coordinating bag. Although it is a smaller bowl, the sound is still very rich and peaceful. I figured out how to make it sing rather quickly; I started with hitting the rim with the wooden striker then sliding the instrument around the outside rim of the bowl. There is a little learning curve, but soon you can change the tone and volume by pressure. I find the practice really centering, and it is a great way to quiet your mind.
Amazonite Mala – Listed Retail Value $34.03 USD ($51 NZD)
In addition to being beautiful, Mala beads are also excellent meditation tools. The beads feel beautiful in my hands and have a great weight to them. The combination of the amazonite and wood is really unique and the bold teal tassel is striking. In addition to my yoga class, I also plan on wearing this beauty with everyday outfits, as a reminder to take a breath and be mindful during the day.
Clear Quartz Points — Listed Retail Value $6.67 USD ($10 NZD)
These 2-3 inch specimens will make beautiful additions to my evergrowing crystal collection. Clear quartz is a healing stone, and also a magnifier for other stones. It is said to absorb and store the powers of other stones it is placed near and I always have a few points on my kitchen windowsill to catch the glow the morning sun. It is also just a really pretty stone, so even if you are not totally into crystals, they make beautiful additions to your decor. This pair also came with an informational card.
Yoga Deck – Listed Retail Value $33.36 ($50 NZD)
As much as I love yoga, my schedule is sometimes so crazy that I admittedly don’t always make it to my favorite classes. Created by Shirley McLeod, these cards are large enough to be easy to read but small enough to travel well. The front of each had a pose and instructional cues to guide you. The back has modification alternatives, which are super helpful if you have an injury, are new to yoga, or simply find the traditional variation uncomfortable As my yoga teacher Jamie always says, “Yoga should not hurt. If it does, modify, modify, modify!” I really enjoyed using these on my mat in my guest room and can absolutely see them as a tool I will reach for frequently.
Verdict: This month’s Astral Box was so thoughtfully put together. Aside from a yoga mat, I basically received a yoga class in a box, complete with meditation tools. As an avid yogi that doesn’t always have time to make it to her classes when real life gets in that way, I was really thrilled with the pose deck, and I am never disappointed when a get a box with crystals. That being said, if you have no interest in yoga, you could still appreciate the beautiful mala and singing bowl.
