Apollo Surprise Box September 2018 Review

When you sign up for Apollo Surprise Box, they will have you answer some questions to get a feel for your tastes!

You first begin with your gender. Too bad you can't skip this or have an "either" option. Who's to say what items are more "male" or "female" when it comes to personal preference?

You'll then choose which categories you're interested in (I chose Home Decor, Kitchen, Fancy Food, Outdoor, Beauty & Accessories, and Terrarium & Garden).

Then the styles you are attracted to (I chose Cute, Minimalist, Punk, Vintage, and Modern).

You will then choose which plan you want, and when you want it delivered before adding your shipping and payment info.

packing list

Here's the packing list that shows the cost of each item on their website and how much you saved by subscribing. The total retail value came to $56.15, so I saved $26.15 by subscribing to the $30.00 price point. Shipping also isn't included on this sheet though, so you can subtract $4.99 from that savings.

info cards

I received four items this time and info cards for each with a photo and short description. There was one item that didn't come with a card.

Back to the Basics Organic Mushroom Farm - Retail Value $19.99 (Found here for $15.99)

Alright, I'm legit stoked on this. I love mushrooms and have never tried to (purposefully) grow them, so we shall see how I do. The kit comes with a big ol pod full of "Organic Mushroom Spawn" that you soak overnight and then place into the box as it's h0me. The box stays upright and you have to mist twice a day with the included spray bottle for 6 days. Around day 7 you should start to see those mushrooms grow straight out of the box and once you hit day 11 they should be ready to harvest. The other cool thing is that there's a recipe for Mushroom and Herb Pasta on the back that you can use your fresh mushrooms in! The Kit also includes a small instruction card and bonus cherry tomato seeds. Very cool! Even though this may be oriented towards kids, I'm excited to try it.

Brave Pal Business Card Holder - Retail Value $29.99 (listed as $14.99 on the packing list, similar item found here for $21.95)

The next item is maybe the most unique of this box. A product of Taiwan, this little desk buddy is a business card holder that you can play around with using the included magnetic accessories. The "about" card that came with it describes it rather nicely and says that sometimes it's just not your day but you can use your Brave Pal to cheer you up. The character is a hard plastic green figure with a yellow cape that stands about five inches tall atop a grey podium. The podium has a slot for business cards although the character's belly sort of pushes them outward. Each of the little arrows, swords, and the plunger has a magnet that allows it to stick to the character so you can place them all over its body. I suppose that could be therapeutic and distract you for a few minutes if you're in a crabby headspace. The bottom of the podium opens to reveal storage for the accessories if you aren't using them. This item doesn't seem super practical but is a fun little item to receive.

Donut Bendy Straw Pen writing sample for Donut Bendy Straw Pen

Donut Bendy Straw Gel Pen - Listed Value $1.98

I couldn't find this one on Apollo's site, but it is rather funny and I have to say writes really well. With all the focus on reusable straws, this pen that looks like a metallic purple bendy straw arrived at the right time to be rather topical. The cap comes off to reveal a super fine point which I like and there's also a little rubber donut charm on it to add a bit of flare. The bendy part does move slightly, so can be fidgeted with while in deep thought about what to write.

Skull Ring Bracelet - Retail Value $19.19

This box is truly filled with wonders! While this bracelet/ring accessory isn't my style, I know a lot of skull and Halloween enthusiasts who'd probably love it. The bracelet is made of a silver chain that is accessorized by a rhinestone encrusted skull which then has a chain attaching it to a rhinestone encrusted ring. The ring is quite large and has an adjustable band. The whole combo reminds me of something a "rocker" would wear in the 80s or 90s and gives me quite a giggle. Not convinced it's worth close to $20, but at least it's the perfect time of year for this.

Verdict: Apollo Surprise Box was such a random mix this month, as it always is. It's certainly fun to see what arrives and there's always at least one or two items that I find usable. This month's total value is $56.15 (using the values listed), which exceeds the $34.99 box cost ($30.00 a month + $4.99 shipping), so the value is there. I think this would be a good box to share with a family or friend since the items run a wide gamut of style and theme. There's bound to be something for everyone in this one.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? The items you will receive are based on your preferences, so you aren't likely to get the same things I did. When you sign up, you can choose your delivery date window as well.

My first Apollo box was terrible. The only thing that I received and liked was a Harry Potter bath bomb. I canceled but was already charged for a second box. It shipped before i was able to get a refund. Go figure but the second box was amazing. Pinky Up cat mug that I’ve wanted forever, succulent candle in a cement pot, indoor basil growing kit, and a round moon lamp that really looks like the moon and is gorgeous.

Now I’m torn on if to resubscribe.

I always forget about this box but I like the idea of it. I love stuff I don’t need but I try not to buy it for myself because… I don’t need it! But it’d be fun to get it in the mail, especially with the coupon decreasing the cost. I’m tempted to try it leading up to the holiday season so I can hopefully use whatever I don’t like as gifts and decrease some of the risk thay way. Has anyone tried to cancel? I’m wary of the subs that I haven’t heard much about and their reliability.

You can cancel easily on the account page. Just be sure to do it before your renewal date.

This is such a strange box, but always so interesting. Seems too risky to sub but I always enjoy seeing reviews.
