Mariér Box “Lifestyle Essentials” September 2018 Review

Marier info sheet

Here is the info sheet for the box.

Marier palette 1 Marier palette 2

Beauty Creations Cali Set Eyeshadow Palette – Retail Value $17

First up this month is this eyeshadow palette! I am always happy to see palettes in subscription boxes, even if I may have way too many. At first glance, I loved the warm-toned pink and brown hues, and I was excited to play with them. This palette has four shimmers and five mattes, and unfortunately while the shades looked gorgeous in the palette when I went to swatch them I had difficulty with patchiness and lack of pigmentation.

Marier palette swatch

Here is the swatch with one finger swipe of each. I decided to try and play with the palette to create a simple look using three of the shades.

Here is my completed look. I took Melrose and applied it to both the inner and outer corners of my eyes. Next, I took Valley Girl and blended it into Melrose on both corners of my eyes. Finally, I patted Calabasas into the center of my lip and then took a fluffy brush to blend all of the shades together. I was happy with the end result, but blending Valley Girl and Melrose (the mattes) and building up to the pigmentation I wanted was very difficult. Calabasas (the shimmer) applied like a dream. My lashes, eyeliner, and lipstick are from the Bless Summer LE Box (review coming soon!).

Marier bb

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Medium/Deep, 1.0 fl oz. – Retail Value $8.99

I love the idea of including a BB cream in this box and Maybelline is a drugstore classic! However, during the signup process for Marier, nowhere can you specify your skin tone, and I received the shade medium/deep when I am definitely on the light end of light/medium. This is unfortunately way too dark for me, and I will be passing it along to a friend who has beautiful honey-toned skin. When we reached out to Marier about this, they said that starting next month they will be offering surveys to subscribers so that appropriate shades are selected moving forward.

Marier ciate 1

Ciate Mini Polish in Hopscotch, 0.17 oz – Listed Value $5.99 (buy a similar full-sized version for $15)

I love Ciate! Their full-size polishes have some of the cutest packagings in the business, and they offer a really fun selection of colors. Hopscotch is an orange-red cream polish with lots of shine.

Marier ciate 2

Here it is on, with two coats and no top coat.

Marier garnier

Garnier Nourishing Cleansing Oil, Full-Size – Listed Value $10.99 (Discontinued)

I really love cleansing oils for my skin- they always leave my skin feeling clean but not stripped. Even though it looks like this was discontinued by Garnier, this did a good job of removing my makeup, and it was a good step one in a two-step cleanse.

Marier brush 1 Marier brush 2

Marier Powder Brush – Listed Value $9

I am a bit of a makeup brush addict, so I am always happy to receive a new one. This Marier-branded brush has a fluffy domed top that is dense with bristles, making it feel super soft while also picking up a good amount of powder. I definitely think this is worth the $9 listed value.

Marier luxe 1 Marier luxe 2 Marier luxe 3

Luxe by Marier “Stacey” Bracelet – Listed Value $7

I absolutely love the marble trend that has been circulating around Instagram and everywhere else, so I was happy to see this bracelet! It features two marble triangles outlined in gold-toned metal and the bracelet itself is adjustable. I was able to adjust it to fit my wide wrists with ease. The metal is a bit flimsy, but I definitely think the quality of the bracelet, overall, is worth the listed value of $7.

Marier clarks 1 Marier clarks 2 Marier clarks 3

Clarks Leather Coin Purse – Listed Value $10

I was so excited to see this coin purse! When I need to carry only the essentials I currently use a beat up Vera Bradley one, and this is a nice one to replace it with. I love the emerald green shade and the buttery soft leather. It has three card slots on the outside and inside of the zipper pouch is a keychain that can attach this wallet to a lanyard or your keys. Unfortunately, my zipper has a bent tooth that prevents it from closing. If any subscribers have the same issue, Marier will gladly replace your coin purse if you let them know!

Marier shampoo 1 Marier shampoo 2

Silicone Shampoo Brush – Listed Value $5

This is the lowest-valued item in the bunch, but it may be my favorite. This shampoo brush has silicone nubs that massage your scalp, and it feels heavenly. I have a cheap, less nice shampoo brush I purchased off Amazon, and this one is so much better! The grip on the other side makes it easier to hold with wet hands, and it helps me work through any tangles that are near the top of my head.

Marier wine 1 Marier wine 2

Special Gift: Custom Martha Steward Stemless Wine Glass – Listed Value $10

I love this so much! Subscribers received a glass stemless wine glass personalized with rose gold cursive that spells your name. I think the design is so classy, and I like that the glass has a good amount of weight in my hand. This also definitely fits in well with the box promise of sending you items that help you relax and unwind.

The Verdict: Marier promises a value of at least $40 in every month, and this months value equals almost $84! I really loved the wineglass and shampoo brush, and I love the coin purse too even though my zipper arrived broken. I thought the “lifestyle essentials” theme this month was well-curated, and I am excited to see them grow in the future and implement ways to better serve subscribers like the survey for customer preferences launching next month.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? No. Next month's box ships on the 4th.

I like the variety of items in this box. Hope to see more reviews of this box in future months.

This is the 4th box that I have received from this sub. Overall I’ve been pretty happy with the items I was sent. CS was attentive the one time that I had to contact them. Another box also had a personalized item. Of all the years and hundreds (thousands?) of boxes that I have received this is the first time I’ve gotten a scalp brush or a Clark’s item.

Not a bad box, but I know I’d expect a higher value – EVERY month, than just $5 over the price I pay. Maybe I’ve been spoiled with subs that do send a higher value.

They’d need to lower the price, offer free shipping or raise the overall value to get me in.

I agree, offer free shipping

Where did you see that the value was $5 over what you would pay? The calculated value in the review was $49 OVER the cost of the box+ shipping

If you read the sub details it says they promise a $40 value. Yes – this month was over that but its not what they could do.

The Verdict: Marier promises a value of at least $40 in every month

Jennifer

I have a BB cream that is too dark for me, but I mix a little with the Nia24 sunscreen that came in a BeautyFix a while back since it has a bit of a white cast. The end result is the perfect color. I sometimes use a darker BB cream or foundation for contour in a pinch as well – a good way to cut through tiny samples in the wrong color.

Thanks Jennifer!!! I don’t want to trash the Nia sunscreen, but that white cast is unreal. Your idea will solve it!

Thanks for the Tip, Jennifer!

It looks like they are putting more items in the boxes, which is great! I do miss the Etsy spotlight items – I loved the first box but wasn’t so crazy about the second. But I like some of the useful items shown here – a shampoo brush sounds like something I need!

It’s also nice that rv doesn’t seem over-inflated – and a personalized wine glass is a nice touch!

I loved the first box they had with etsy sellers products. A candle and a bath bomb that I had no problem paying retail for. I really wish they would go back to that.

Nice review! I felt I got a thorough grasp of what I could expect from this subscription box from reading your review and I liked your pic of how you applied the makeup palette. Nice job.
