Gramma In a Box September 2018 Review
This card describes the candy and cookie projects for this month. On the back, it lists the contents of the box as well as a list of items that you would need from home. It also mentioned that the two sheets of included wax paper were to be used as placemats to make for easy cleanup. This month's theme is Back to School and I love the creativity this month!
Project #1: Wafer Pencils
The first candy project was wafer pencils. Each recipe comes on its own card with the ingredients listed on the back. They are always labeled in the order that you should make them so everything is well- planned out and easy to follow.
The first step was to melt our white chocolate wafers in a bowl and stir them until melted.
We dumped our sprinkles into a bowl to prepare them for dipping. It's hard to tell but these red sprinkles have a little bit of gold to them as well making them super shiny and perfect for these crafts!
We laid out our pencil wafers and chocolate chips in preparation and then we got to it!
We dipped the square end in the chocolate and then dipped them in sprinkles to create our eraser, then we dipped the pointed tip in the chocolate and added a chocolate chip for our pencil tip. How adorable are these? They were also delicious since the middle layers of our wafers was actually strawberry flavored!
Project #2: Teacher's Apples
Our second project were Teacher's Apples and they are the cutest little apples I've ever made!
First, we dumped out our little pretzel sticks, marshmallows, and leaf sprinkles. They gave us a lollipop stick to use for dipping, so we stuck a marshmallow on, coated it in chocolate and then rolled them in the shiny, red sprinkles and removed them from the stick. Then I let my daughter add the pretzel stick for the stem and our tiny leaves.
This picture doesn't do it justice, but they really did look like cute, shiny apples. Those sprinkles had a real wow factor to them! I always claim I am not a marshmallow fan, but each month, I always enjoy the marshmallow crafts- mostly because they are always covered in chocolate, which is the only way to eat a marshmallow in my opinion!
Project #3: Back to School Cookie Decorating
The last activity was the cookie decorating. They included 6 ABC cookies (2 of each letter), 4 mini apple cookies and three bags of icing in red, yellow and blue. We also had three different types of sprinkles to use.
We got pretty into our cookie decorating so I didn't get any process photos, but these are some of the cookies my daughter made. I think these taste best after a few hours when the icing has hardened up a little!
We always have plenty of extra icing leftover despite the fact that my daughter always goes super heavy on the icing!
The projects this month were perfect for Back to School. I thought they were very creative and super cute! In the end, we had 20 finished projects: 4 pencils, 6 apples, and 10 cookies.
I always appreciate the individual recipe cards for each project because they are easy to save and use again if we find one that we really like.
I love how easy clean up is each month. I literally just put all of the empty containers and papers into the box that it ships in and throw it in the recycle bin. After a quick wipe up, I get to spend that time enjoying some treats with the kids instead of doing dishes! We probably spent about 30 minutes working on our crafts and it made for a perfect rainy day afternoon activity.
Verdict: I really enjoyed the theme and the crafts this month. Gramma In A Box is always so well organized with well thought out projects and step by step directions. It feels very homemade, yet they always make sure to include important ingredient and allergen information.
This box costs $20 per month, and while it's probably something I could recreate on my own for less, the value in this box is definitely in the fact that I don't have to plan or organize any of it. Instead, my time is spent being creative with my daughter, making festive treats with little to no mess. We have really begun to look forward to this box each month, and it's so nice to have some built-in bonding time!
