TreatLuv dog treats

This is a review of the Large (50+ pounds) Dog Size box. My dog, Del, is a mutt who we adopted from the local shelter a little over a year ago (the shelter suggested he might be an Airedale-Lab mix). He just makes the cut for the Large dog size, weighing in at about 55 pounds.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

TreatLuv July 2018 Review

TreatLuv sub

TreatLuv handwritten note

My TreatLuv box was packaged simply and with this cute little card to greet me. I love the handwritten note, it's so filled with personality! It's a similar message to the one in the last TreatLuv box I received (in April), but just as delightful.

TreatLuv purina bacon dog treats

TreatLuv bacon treats

TreatLuv bacon strips

Purina Original Bacon Flavor Beggin' Strips, 3 oz. – Retail Value $7.95

It's hard to go wrong with a bacon-flavored dog treat! Del was way into these strips. I also liked that they weren't greasy on my fingertips.

Here he is sitting for his treat. He would have loved a full strip, but he had just eaten when this box arrived, so I broke a small piece off for him. That'll make 'em last longer, anyway!

TreatLuv salmon treats

Blue Wilderness Salmon Grain-Free Dog Biscuits, 10 oz. – Retail Value $6.49 (found on sale here for $5.99)

These grain-free biscuits were the hit of the box. I know they're biscuits, which are usually a pretty tidy experience for the treat-giver, but given how strongly like salmon they smell, I'm again amazed at/appreciative of how not-greasy they are.

In fact, they smell so strongly like salmon that even the cat wanted in on it! He didn't get any, but he sure tried.

Here's Del getting a sniff. He was a little impatient to get his teeth around this one and ate it so quickly! For a dog that usually turns his nose up at biscuits, I couldn't believe how much he loved these.

TreatLuv paws barkery treats

TreatLuv cookie treats TreatLuv dog cookies

Paws Barkery BowWow Snickerdoodles Treats, 8 oz. – Retail Value $6.99

These dog cookies were included in my last TreatLuv dog box and I feel the same way now that I did then, which is that I want to eat one myself! They smell so good! The ingredients list is simple and healthy for your dog: Wheat flour, Honey, Vegetable Fat, Egg, Potassium Bitartrate ("Cream of Tartar"), Cinnamon, Baking Soda, and Vanilla. Even though Del definitely could gobble one of these whole, we usually give him smaller treats, so I broke one in half for him. They're pretty crumbly, so I would recommend breaking the treats inside the bag instead of over the floor. Ultimately these weren't Del's cup of tea—he left lots of crumbs behind—so I brought the last bag to work to give to the dogs in the office. They all loved 'em, so I'll bring this bag to keep in my desk as well!

Verdict: This was another successful TreatLuv dog box! The Beggin' Strips are an indulgent treat for Del, the Blue Wilderness grain-free biscuits are a good everyday snack/reward, and the slightly more indulgent dog snickerdoodles are a fun one to share with some of our pup friends. Value-wise, this box costs $24.99 (with free US shipping), which is a little high given that the three treats found elsewhere add up to $21.43.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be August's. Also, box content can vary based on your dog’s size.

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.

While I like the idea of this box, I feel it’s expensive for what it is. Maybe if it was more exclusive type dog treats (small batch) it would feel more special. Also 3 bags of treats are a lot for a month. I have two (small) dogs and depending on the treat type, we may get through half of that. Of course other people with larger or more dogs may go through this easily. But for the rest of us, an option as bimonthly may be better (maybe that is offered??) . just my opinion…

It’s a lot of treats for us, too, Jessica. I usually end up sharing them with other dogs like I mentioned above, but I agree that this box is a bit pricey to be doing that every month. I’d love to see more specialized treats included!
