The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club June 2018 Review
A detailed newsletter is included each month where you can read about the two featured breweries and the beer that you will find in your box. I love reading the stories behind each brewery and learning more about how they make each beer. The featured breweries for June are Wild Ride Brewing Company and Christian Moerlein Brewing Company. Now for the beers!
Our first brewery of the month is Wild Ride Brewing Company from Redmond, OR. Wild Ride began in 2014 when a group of Redmond natives and friends put their dreams into motion. Paul Bergeman serves as brewmaster and the brewhouse is located at an old lumber warehouse right in downtown Redmond. If you are ever in the area, you can visit the taproom that offers multiple food trucks daily and to see their 20-barrel brewing system.
The first beer from Wild Ride is the Whoopty Whoop Wheat, an American Hefeweizen with 5.5% alcohol and 20 IBUs. This was our favorite of the month and went to a lot of good friends at a summer picnic the other night! You get a big hit of citrus, including a lemon tartness, along with some floral notes. The wheat provides that crisp spice flavor that makes this drink so refreshing and easy to enjoy!
Our next beer from Wild Ride is their Brenna A Amber Lager with 5.5% alcohol and 25 IBUs. This beer, at first, tastes like a traditional amber lager with a strong toast and light caramel flavors. Then you are hit with a big citrus flavor! I love the unique blend of traditional with something oh so different like this bold sweet kick that you get in each sip. I also loved reading that this beer is named after one of the crab fishing boats that is featured in the show, Deadliest Catch. A portion of the profits from this beer go towards fighting ALS which took the life of Captain Pat Dwyer. A great beer going to a great cause!
Our second brewery is Christian Moerlein Brewing Company out of Cincinnati, OH. Over-the-Rhine is a thriving location in Cincinnati that was once home to at least 36 breweries. It had a bit of a downtime over the years that I was in college at Xavier, but Cincinnati has worked hard to build this area back up. I am so happy to see another OTR brewery featured this month! Christian Moerlein was founded in 1853 by Moerlein himself, a blacksmith and apprentice brewer from Bavaria. The brewery was so successful it was even sold internationally, which was rare at the time. By 1920, when prohibition hit, the brewery was forced to close its doors. By 2004, after a few different owners, Moerlein Brewing was bought by Cincinnati resident Greg Hardman to bring back to its roots. It has been thriving along with Over-the-Rhine!
The first beer is Third Wave IPA, an American IPA with 6.2% alcohol and 55 IBUs. Now, this is the type of beer that we love in our house! Rich pine notes, spice, and a tiny aftertaste of citrus. There is that perfect blend of bitterness that pairs so nicely with the blend of citrus flavors. I could see myself enjoying this beer at any time of the year, it is so bold, bitter, yet refreshing.
The last beer of the month is Seven, a German-style Hefeweizen with 4.8% alcohol and 19 IBUs. This beer is so incredible and light! It has that yummy clove and pepper flavor right at my first sip but then you get some light sweetness. You also get lots of wheat flavors that pair so nicely with the overall spice of this beer. This beer is so light and fresh! It reminds me of warm nights during our first few months back at school. I could see myself sipping on this along with a potato pancake, my favorite street food to get during the Cincinnati Oktoberfest!
Now that we are done tasting, here is a view of all the beers to see the difference in each! From left to right: Seven, Whoopty Whoop Wheat, Third Wave IPA, Brenna A Amber Lager.
Verdict: This Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club was incredible because it featured beers that were really great to enjoy no matter what the season! They were each light and fresh, great for sipping during this warm summer. We receive so many beers each month that we had so many leftovers to share with our friends at a recent summer picnic. The best part for me is reading and learning about breweries from all over! Many of the featured breweries are ones that I might never have a chance to visit and that I might not be able to purchase in my local store. Being able to taste test so many brews each month is where I really see the value! I also love that this is the second month featuring a brewery from my old hometown, Cincinnati!
To Wrap Up:
Can I still get this box if I sign up today? As of publication, you will start receiving the August Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club box.
Value Breakdown: This box costs $42.95 a month including the shipping cost. I received a total of 12 beers which is a value of $3.57 per bottle of beer, much less than you would pay for these beers if you ordered them at a pub. Plus, the overall curation and exclusivity of each brewery is where I really see the value each month.
