Quirky Crate August 2018 Box Review
This month, Quirky Crate is all about back to school season. I might be uh, several years removed from my school days, but I still get excited about all of the new desk accessories/stationery that pop up this time of year. Besides, it’s the perfect time to refresh my style/vibe for fall.
The featured artist this month is Elora Nelson. I’ve been browsing her stuff online—her super cute pieces are SUCH a perfect match for this subscription box!
Elora Nelson Rainbow Flower Power Lapel Pin – Retail Value 12.00 CAD (about $9.19 USD), Listed Value $10.00
This rainbow pin is so cute! It’s a relatively simple design, but the bright colors and golden gem center make it stand out. And the soft rubbery backing is yellow! I know you don’t usually see it, but that little playful touch makes this piece feel all the more fun.
Girl Gang Backpack – Listed Value $34.00
I’ve gotten totes and other bags from this subscription before, so it’s not a huge surprise that they opted for a backpack this month! I should say, it’s not just a backpack—it’s a backpack with a removable rainbow tassel and a burger keychain, too! The bag has a made in China tag inside, but I couldn’t find any fabric/care info listed for it. It feels like some kind of polyester weave with a light weight to it and a canvas-like finish. To be honest, I’m not wild about the “girl gang” print on the front (I’d prefer if it was just plain), but I do think the watermelon-esque color scheme is cute. Plus it’s big enough for my laptop and then some. It might not be great for toting around big textbooks, but it’s just fine for my commute on the way to a coffee shop workday.
Ooly Bamboo Brights Scented Highlighters – Retail Value $4.99, Listed Value $5.00
Scented markers always bring me back to my elementary school days! These colorful highlighters do have fruity, candy-like scents to them. I like that they stack on top of one another, too! Their small size is great for stashing in a pencil pouch or even a pocket. I’m torn as to whether I like the rosy pink or the bright electric blue better…
Pencil Patch – Listed Value $5.00
I love the iron-on patches I get from this subscription. This pencil is about the length of a business card and has a great glistening quality to its golden and pink thread. I love stationery, and there’s something SO classic and cool about a yellow no. 2 pencil. Still, I might have to give this patch to Marne—I mean, the girl’s got a pencil tattoo!
Rose Cosmetic Mirror – Listed Value $6.00
As weird as it sounds, my beauty routine almost never happens in front of a bathroom mirror or vanity. My vanity is my car! LOL! And if I’m not putting on eyeliner in a parking lot, I’m messing with my hair in the reflections in shop windows or mirrored walls at restaurants, etc. (Do you ever find yourself in the same sitch, dear reader?) Thanks to this little pocket-sized mirror, though, I can do touch ups without incurring the sideways stares of other folks around me. The creamy pink plastic of this mirror has a real Barbie/Polly Pocket vibe to it. I can tell it’s not the most sophisticated, high-quality compact in the world (as is what I’ve come to expect from Quirky Crate), but it’s still awfully fun. And handy!
Bentoy Fuzzy Case – Listed Value $12.00
I wish this case was fuzzy all the way around rather than just fuzzy on one side! The pastel fur (which I’m 90% sure is fake, though there isn’t any fabric tag on the item…) reminds me of rainbow sherbet, and I dig the pom pom on the zipper. There’s something a little creepy about the embroidered little person on the non-fuzzy side of this pleather-like bag, but otherwise, I’m into it. It’s a great size for makeup or, in this case, pencils and pens!
Creative Socks Cotton School Socks – Listed Value $9.00
I LOVE the socks I get in this box!!! This beige pair features a pattern of protractors, binder clips, and other office-y goodies. The color palette is just right for fall, and the designs are just so unconventional and cool! I can’t wait to wear these with ballet flats or heck, poking out from the straps of some sandals as we transition from summer to fall weather.
Bling Ring Eraser – Listed Value $3.00
Whoa, this is one glamorous eraser! It’s honestly not the greatest eraser (I found it to be a little smudgy), but it’s so darn fun that I’ll probably keep it around for emergencies anyway. I love that it has glitter inside of it AND that you can wear it!
Note Pals Caterpillar Sticky Tabs – Listed Value $2.00
Tabs like this are my fave. They’re great for marking up planner pages and flagging favorite passages in books. Plus, I love that this set feels like a nod to the Very Hungry Caterpillar!
The Verdict: While the quality of the items in this box is hit or miss, there’s no denying that I still get some of the biggest smiles from this subscription. I love the pins, the socks, and the cute gift items they find. Some of it feels a little discount store-ish (like the hand mirror and the ring-shaped eraser), but I’ve got a pretty good track record of still using almost everything I get in these boxes! If it’s not your aesthetic, though, I’d say go with another subscription—it’s usually the cute colors and designs that make me forgive any so-so quality. The fact that they support an indie artist in each box is awesome, too!
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Order soon to get the September box! Order by the 13th of the month to get that month’s box. Boxes ship of the 15th of each month.
Value Breakdown: This box cost $40.94 (price + US shipping) and has an estimated value of $85.18 using the values I could find online and the prices listed on the info card for items that I couldn’t find a reliable price for. The average price per item is $4.55.
