A Little Touch of Magick August 2018 “The Conservatory” Review
I am still fairly new to reviewing this subscription and was excited to see what they had in store:
The box came with this information card listing the items and retail values. Since the items were unbranded, I used these values when writing the review.
Original Short Fiction
This was the first thing I saw when I opened the box. I think you are supposed to read it before diving into the box contents (it doesn’t take long, though the lengths do vary by up to a couple of pages each month) but because I am taking unboxing photographs, I usually wait until later in the evening. Anyway, this story wasn’t quite as dark in tone as some of those in past months.
Striped Travel Visor – Listed Value $24
This is fun and seems to be quite nice in quality – not flimsy at all. It has a hook and loop tape closure in the back (i.e., Velcro) that is cleverly hidden by the bow. Also, that makes the size adjustable. I don’t really like wearing things on my head, but the fact that this has an open top makes it work a lot better for me than a baseball cap. This will be great for shading my face when I am out walking Nyx or doing touristy things when I have visitors in town.
Golden Rose Necklace – Listed Value $30
I would say this has a rose gold finish and it is really delicate. (You also see it in one of the visor pictures above.) The information card value is reasonable for something of this size with an actual rose gold plating. I have some other necklaces with the same finish I could layer this with, or I could just wear it on its own. I definitely prefer delicate jewelry so this is perfect for me.
The Conservatory Bath Bomb – Listed Value $3
I have a heated foot bath that says you can put bath bombs in it, so that’s what I did with this last night since I never have time to take baths these days. It fizzed nicely but did not overflow (which is good since my living room carpet is off-white…). The water was such a dark green I couldn’t see my feet, but obviously in a bathtub that would probably not be true since there is a ton more water involved! This had a lovely fragrance that I am hard-pressed to describe and it did not irritate my skin, even at a high concentration in my foot bath.
The Conservatory Perfume Oil Blend – Listed Value $10
The notes in this actually tie in with the story, which is fun, but they also happen to be notes that I like quite a bit, including woods and musk, so this will see a lot of use.
Flower Crowned Cat Note Card – Listed Value $4
There is a cat (of sorts) in the story so this ties in, but also you will usually get a card or note card or two in this box. They are usually blank (like this one) so they can be used for any occasion. I like having a stash of cards without ever having to buy any!
Embroidered Floral Crossbody Pouch – Listed Value $28
This is a fun little drawstring pouch with a shoulder strap that you can either use or conceal inside the bag. It is not really a full purse, as you can see, but it is big enough for a few essentials if you don’t want to lug around a huge bag to a function. As with the other bags (usually totes) we’ve received in this subscription, the embroidery feels and looks to be of a nice quality when viewed in person.
Peacock Shawl – Listed Value $45
You will sometimes get a clothing item in this subscription, but from what I have seen, it is always something like a shawl or a wrap that will work with a lot of different body shapes and sizes, which I think is really thoughtful. I love the details on the back of this and also the color and I would probably actually wear this out with a plain black dress like this one (from Unique Vintage) so that this accessory is the star of the outfit. It will probably be winter before I can wear it for real, in Georgia, because it is still in the 90s right now, but I think the red and gold could be good holiday colors. (Also apparently I cannot hold both my arms straight out to the sides at the same time…)
Verdict: I calculated a total value of $144 for the August 2018 A Little Touch of Magick. Granted, I did have to use all values from the information card, but that is almost triple the cost of the subscription plus shipping on a month-to-month basis, and that includes mostly unique handcrafted items. Even if you think one or two values from the card are a little high, you are still getting (easily) $100+ in merchandise.
I also think there is something to be said for curation here. Opening this box isn’t just about the items (which were all lovely), but there is also an element of experience here, helped along by the story. Although this is a relatively new subscription, I can tell that a great deal of thought has been put into it, from sourcing the items on down to the careful packaging.
