VetPet Box (Cat Version) July 2018 Review

Every month, VetPet Box sends toys, supplies, and wellness items. The wellness items this time around relate to 4th of July safety. My box looks like it got run over by a truck, and in fact, it traveled to at least two incorrect neighboring post offices in different Atlanta suburbs before making it to me:

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box.

This month, the educational material deals with 4th of July safety (both making sure your cats don’t get lost because of being scared/anxious, and dealing with the anxiety itself). My kitties are definitely freaked out by the sound of firecrackers.

All for Paws Vintage Cat Sack – Listed Value $22.99

I can’t find a US-based source for this item so I’m using the value from the information card, which seems reasonable. (I receive this brand frequently in cat subscription boxes and I rarely find their items for sale in the US.) This is a crinkly sack that provides a hiding place for your cat. Mr. Kitty is the only one willing to investigate the day I took photos, but I suspect this is mostly going to be an Angus item going forward.

Vetriscience Composure Treats (30 count)

Vetriscience Composure Treats (30 count) – Retail Value $11.99 (found here for $8.99)

I am familiar with this product because I have tried it before. When Sneaky’s asthma started getting worse (it used to be seasonal, but now it is year-round), attacks seemed brought on by stress (i.e., Angus) so I tried giving these to calm her down. Unfortunately, they didn’t cut down on the asthma attacks. But, she did like them and they may work in other situations. Actually Sneaky has been pretty angry lately so I am willing to try them again.

Cool Cucumber by Mad Cat (2 count) –

Cool Cucumber by Mad Cat (2 count) – Total Retail Value $9.98 ($4.99 each)

We love Mad Cat toys! I don’t even care that they’re the same one as the cats have no idea. Madison, especially, is a fan, although he wouldn’t play when I tried to take pictures (cats are fickle). These have catnip, but also silvervine, which some cats prefer over catnip.

Cat Dreams DVD by Go Cat

Cat Dreams DVD by Go Cat – Retail Value $14.95 (found here for $7.88)

This is a bunch of video clips of things that are supposed to be interesting to cats. In the first few minutes, we saw gerbils, birds at a bird bath, mice, butterflies, and a hamster, all with accompanying sounds. I tried to get Monkey and Sneaky to watch it but they were more interested in exploring my basement exercise room. I am not giving up, though – I’ll put this on, on the nice TV in the living room with the fancy stereo system, right as soon as my husband shows me how to operate it…I think Angus may find it interesting (he likes to look at his own reflection on various surfaces), but I can’t catch him to take him downstairs!

Fruitables Wildly Natural Salmon Treats (2.5 oz) – Retail Value $2.99 (found here for $2.69)

These are US-made, small, crunchy treats. They come in a resealable bag and are not stinky despite the fish flavor (the main protein here is actually chicken, though, and there are some grain ingredients – rice flour and barley – but they are free of wheat, corn, and soy). The cats liked these a lot.

Fruitables Wildly Natural Tuna Treats (2.5 oz)

Fruitables Wildly Natural Tuna Treats (2.5 oz) – Retail Value $2.99 (found here for $2.69)

This is a tuna version of the treats above. I have pretty much the same things to say about these as I do the salmon ones. (Always happy to get a treat that is not freeze-dried meat.)

Gratuitous cat photo time:

Angus was all about the treats on the day I took photos.

Madison liked the treats as well.

Here he is with the cucumbers. I couldn’t get him to go nuts like with the ice cream cone last month. But I know it will happen eventually.

Time for today’s episode of “Monkey rubs his chin on things.”

Monkey didn’t want treats. He was working on a big hairball at the time though and not eating much of anything.

I was injured while taking these photos. My thumb now sports a new bandaid.

Mr. Kitty poses with the cucumbers.

And here he investigates the bed/sack thing. He seems to like crinkle tubes/hidey holes/toys more than the other cats do.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $65.89 for July’s VetPet Box. That’s about $20 above the cost of the box and one of the best values I have ever seen for this subscription. The treats were all hits, I did get some interest in the bed, and Mad Cat toys are perennial favorites in my house. I am still trying to get the cats interested in the DVD, as well. Plus, I think the theme of trying to calm anxiety is a good idea at this time of year – my cats are totally affected by the sound of firecrackers.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? New subscribers usually get an introductory box. However, if you contact Vet Pet Box, you can get a past month’s box (like say you really want to get the dental one more than once, because your cat has bad teeth).

Value Breakdown: At $45 for the multi-cat box, you are paying approximately the following per item (double items counted as one in the list below):

  • Crinkle sack: $15.70
  • Composure treat: $8.19
  • Cucumber toys: $6.82 ($3.41 each)
  • DVD: $10.21
  • Salmon treats: $2.04
  • Tuna treats: $2.04

Coconut oil works great for hair balls. I have 2 cats That will eat it in their bowl or mixed with their food and the other two I have to feed it to them on a finger. It works much better than the hairball remedies they sell and its natural

Monkey likes coconut oil but he has some intestinal issues at the moment so I don’t want to upset the balance. I may start giving him some once his issues have resolved (let’s just say, I had to cut a bunch of hair off his rear end and hind legs).

I know what you mean! One of my cats is part Maine coon and he’s got some long furry hair on his hind end. He needs some assistance at times lol

I’m just here for the gratuitous cat photos. They did not disappoint! 😉

Carry on.
