Stitch Fix Review – My Hacks to Improve Your First Fix

Stich Fix Review - Modeling the items I received

Updated: March, 11th, 2020.

If you’re considering signing up for Stitch Fix, or you’ve tried Stitch Fix and weren’t thrilled with your items, this list of Stitch Fix hacks is for you! The main issue I’ve heard from readers (and experienced myself), is that sometimes it doesn’t feel like your stylist got your style right. And getting a box of items that are mostly misses is a pretty frustrating shopping experience.

If you aren’t familiar, Stitch Fix is a clothing and styling personal styling service. When you initially sign up, you take an in-depth survey that asks you about your clothing size, personal style, and price preferences. Your stylist handpicks five items based on your preferences within the survey. The fee for this service is $20, and that includes free shipping as well as free returns. If you keep any of the items they send you, you get to deduct the $20 fee from the total. If you keep all five items, you also get a 25% discount. Stitch Fix offers clothing for Men, Kids, Maternity, Petite, and Plus Size.

Below, you’ll find my review of my first Stitch Fix following their standard sign up and profile set up so you know exactly what to expect. And after that, I’ll share my hacks for how to make your first Stitch Fix even better than mine now that I’ve learned how to master Stitch Fix!

Stitch Fix Items

My Subscription Addiction paid for this Stitch Fix. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review products).

Each shipment comes with a free return bag. All you have to do is package up anything you want to return and send it back. Super easy.

When you first sign up for Stitch Fix, you’ll fill out a survey to give your stylist specifics on your size, style, clothing needs etc. And the best part is you can also leave notes for exactly what you are looking for. In my case, I told my stylist that I love maxi dresses and that I need bold tops that are good for filming YouTube videos. (That means eye-catching but not distracting.) As you can see on the note included from my stylist, she used that feedback!

And there are also cards for each piece to give you styling ideas.

This is the invoice that was sent. As you can see, it provides specifics on the brand, size, and price of each item. They also give instructions at the bottom for how to check out and either purchase or return your items. My total came to $253, but with the 25% off if I keep everything, it would be $189.75.

OK, here are the pieces:

Market & Spruce Hans Crochet Front Top – Cost to Keep $58

(Size Medium)

This top is fully lined on the torso, with see-through sleeves.

I like this as a new take on a basic white top. The fit is somewhat loose, but the crochet still gives it structure. So I get the comfort I love, and I think I could still dress this up for a more formal look.

Vigoss Colle Distressed Cropped Skinny Jean – Cost to Keep $68

(Size 6)

I LOVE a distressed jean, and I indicated that in my style profile, so I was very happy to see my stylist deliver! The fit is great too, and these jeans had the right amount of stretch. (But I just wish they were high-waisted! I’ll let my stylist know to only send high-waist styles for my next Fix.)

Urban Expressions Maison Whipstitch Trim Crossbody Bag – Cost to Keep $39

This purse features a zippered fold over section and a removable chain so you can also wear it as a clutch.

And a whipstitch finish on the edges:

In my style profile, I indicated that I wanted to try bags, but I picked the cheapest price range, and again, my stylist nailed it – I love the cross-body style. It has the hands-free convenience of the fanny pack, while still being pretty much considered fashionably acceptable by all.

Here it is on:

And I don’t have any taupe-colored accessories, so this fills in a hole in my wardrobe, too.

Papermoon Conner Lattice Top – Cost to Keep $34

(Size: Medium)

Eh, this top isn’t too exciting for me. It’s soft, but the one interesting detail is in the back:

And that means either an exposed bra, a bra challenge, or wearing a tank underneath this – none of which have the easy-to-wear tee vibe!

Papermoon Danyela Knit Maxi Dress – Cost to keep $54

(Size: Medium)

First, please excuse my paler-than-normal arms – I need to catch up on my self-tanning!

This elastic-waist dress fits well, but I wasn’t in love with it. For one thing, as I alluded to above, I’m somewhat lazy when it comes to clothes and bras, and usually, end up wearing the items I can wear with a traditional bra. That means items with necklines like these will stay in my closet with the tags on. I left a note on my account after seeing this dress that I’d like to see maxis with sleeves – hopefully, I get one next month!

Hacks for improving your first Stitch Fix:

  1. When you are filling out the style profile, be pickier than you think you should be. There’s a section with different body parts to let them know if you like to show them off, show them sometimes, keep them covered, etc. (Arms, torso, cleavage, legs, etc.) I was neutral on showing off my arms, but the reality is I don’t really like/wear sleeveless tops, so I should have just taken a firm no on that one. (You can always update your profile at any time, too.)
  2. On the final page of your style profile, you can leave detailed notes. Your stylist will read these, so make sure to get as specific as you can. If you’re going to an event and need an outfit for it, give all the details.
  3. Create a Pinterest board with outfits/styles you love. When you are filling out your style profile you can share this and it’s a great way to give your stylist a visual of what you like. This is the best way to make sure your stylist can visualize your style. If you have the time to do it, do not skip this step! (Check out my review of Stitch Fix once I gave my stylist a Pinterest board to see the difference.)
  4. Play Style Shuffle! On your account page, you can vote thumbs up or down on items. It’s fun and also helps add more data to your profile for your stylist to work with.

Lastly, one thing to keep in mind, even with these hacks, there’s still a chance that you’ll get an item or two that you don’t love. My last tip? Make sure to get very specific in your feedback about why you don’t like the item. Your stylist will read all this feedback when picking your next items, so make sure you give them as much info as possible!

  1. I get the best pants from stitch fix!

  2. I have been researching but just don’t have it in me to pull the trigger.

    • If you still haven’t tried, I’d suggest you check reddit dot com every now and then, or set up a Google Alert for “100 stitch fix credit”
Sometimes Stitch Fix will give their customers referral offers over $25, but it’s only for a limited time. I think it was October/November when I saw a customer share a $100 credit on reddit–that should be enough to buy one piece, ha ha ha (seriously though, maybe that’s not even enough for two items!)

  3. I would love to try Stitch Fix. I’m in a clothing rut and could use some help.

  4. I had two boxes in a row where i kept every single item!!

  5. I just started getting it and in my first box I got an awesome pair of pink pants that I wouldn’t have picked out shopping on my own

  6. My little town does not have a wide variety of anything!! This would be heaven sent!!

  7. I’ve gotten some of my best pieces from Stitch Fix. The stylists are great and really listen to your feedback! I get compliments all the time on most of the stuff I get but on one dress in particular. People love it and I love wearing it!

  8. I’ve had two stitch fix boxes so far. I’ve been very descriptive on my preferences; my second stylist was pretty much dead on to my tastes and size. I just put in a special box request for a business casual look.
It’s been the first place that had s box of jeans that fit me perfectly.

  9. I’ve never tried StitchFix before. I’d be interested to see how close they get on fit (I try on lots and lots of things in the store before finding something I love) and style!

  10. I’m most interested in someone finding clothes for me.

But, I worry about the price and fit. I just don’t know how likely I’d be to keep things…

  11. I’ve not tried Stitch fix but they have some great dresses and blouses that I like.

    • I haven’t. (Argh)

  12. I have never tried Stitchfix but I have been wanting to. I need to expand my wardrobe. I tend to get stuck in a rut and buy the same things.

  13. I’d love to discover some new jeans brands

  14. Well my first box was really really bad and the stylist didn’t look at my boards and so on so I wasn’t a fan. But then I asked for a new stylist and it was AMAZING…She really did such a great job that I kept lots of pieces and a whole box 2 times. I am very sad that my old stylist is no longer thete but I am excited. Thank you MSA for this amazing guveaway. Ohh and Stitch Fix too.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  15. I’m interested in some new casual looks

  16. I”m interested in finding new brands thru Stitch Fix

  17. I would love to find new clothes. I have been wanting to change my style up a little bit so I think it would be so much fun to have someone else pick items out for me that I would not have chosen for myself.

  18. Looking for help in transitioning from yoga pants to casual chic.

  19. I won a Stitch Fix contest before they carried my size so I gave it to my daughter and she liked what she got. I would want just basic items with a little color or print.

  20. I got a maxi dress that was short enough for me and I loved it! Unfortunately, it cost way too much, even though I asked for the lowest price point.

  21. I have tried stitch fix several times, but the last 3 fixes did not work for me at all. I have taken a break for a year. Great way to get new items that a good quality.

  22. My most recent stitch fix wine was a bright yellow shirt with crochet shoulders and floral shorts that matched absolutely perfect.

  23. I love it! I get anxious trying to shop, so having stitch fix has really helped broaden my closet!! And I love the jeans they send 😉

  24. Haven’t tried yet but would love some new casual clothes

  25. Absolutely the best pants! We just tried the kid box too (daughter, age 7). She loved it, and the stylist did a great job accommodating her preferences.

  26. Excited!! Waiting for my first box arriving next week.

  27. I like the idea of Stitch Fix but usually i keep clothes and then never wear them because they are a little uncomfortable.

  28. I love all the cute clothes would love to try.

  29. I haven’t tried stitch fix yet. My concern about it are that I’m so short nothing will fit. Maybe one day I’ll get over it and give them a try.

    • If you have a referral credit, I’d say go for it. On reddit, you might find referral credits of more than $25 (I once saw a referral credit of $100!, but it was for a limited time).
There are a few opportunities for you to give the stylist specifics about your concerns and your measurements.
What I wish, is that they could send you 5 pairs of pants, or 5 tops in one shipment, to increase the chance that you’ll like something, but unfortunately, I think they always send 5 different types of things. What I did was to say I did not want dresses, purses, bracelets, etc., and they didn’t send those, so that was good. And then you can change those restrictions later.

  30. I have a very hard time finding cute and classy clothes that fit me right. I can spend hours shopping and walk away with nothing! I decided to give Stitch Fix a try and who would have known that this would be the solution! I must say I’m very impressed. I loved everything in my first box and they fit perfectly! I was shocked! How can an online personal shopper find clothes that fit me and meet my style! I’m excited to finally have some cute clothes to wear! Thank you so much!

  31. I’m not too sure how it works still but I’m interested in seeing if they can find things for a plus size woman with my measurements.

  32. I’ve never tried Stitch Fix before but I would be most interested in finding comfy, non-jeans pants after years of wearing dresses most of the time.

  33. I haven’t tried this or any clothing subscription before but it would be fun to maybe find new styles that I would never have tried before.

  34. I have been subscribed to Stitch Fix for over a year. I love my monthly shipments. I’ve had a few different stylists, and they have all brought something new and fabulous to the table! I would love the opportunity to win $500 in order to buy more excellent pieces! Thank you!

  35. I’m most excited about trying some tops, if I’m selected a winner!

  36. I’ve never tried it but I’m interested in trying something new and different than what I normally wear.

  37. My favorite thing about them is they are the only clothing box that let’s you order boxes as needed, for example, every quarter when a new season starts. I have gotten a handful of items I really love, like two cardigans. I wear those the most.

  38. I enjoyed when I got StitchFix. One of my successes was an Emily Rose cardigan I never would’ve found otherwise.

  39. I want to gift myself a Stitch Fix subscription when I hit my goal weight! I have been dying to try it!

  40. My success story is that I finally found a pair of jeans that fits perfectly through Stitch Fix!

    • Are you able, then, to easily buy ANOTHER pair of the SAME jeans? Did you :)?

  41. Love Stitch Fix, I’ve updated alot of my closet from items they’ve sent me.

  42. I would love to try Stitch Fix and add some items to modernize and freshen up my wardrobe. I’ve just always got that “Mom guilt” when I buy for myself rather than my kiddos. Thanks for the opportunity!!!

  43. I have never tried stitch fix, but I would be most excited to see what a real stylist would pick for me….. I dislike clothing shopping very much!

  44. Never tried it, but I like the idea of saving time and frustration by having someone else do my seasonal shopping for me.

  45. never tried it, but would love too!

  46. Would love to try some different styles and get out of my t-shirt and jeans.

  47. Never tried. But sounds really interesting!

  48. Has been mostly a miss for me. Everyone seems to get better items.

  49. All the outfits look so nice on you!

  50. I have gotten 2 pairs of jeans from Stitch Fix, which is nothing short of a miracle! I’m short and have an hourglass figure, which means jeans NEVER fit me, and somehow they managed to find me two pairs that work perfectly.
