Stitch Fix Review – My Hacks to Improve Your First Fix

Stich Fix Review - Modeling the items I received

Updated: March, 11th, 2020.

If you’re considering signing up for Stitch Fix, or you’ve tried Stitch Fix and weren’t thrilled with your items, this list of Stitch Fix hacks is for you! The main issue I’ve heard from readers (and experienced myself), is that sometimes it doesn’t feel like your stylist got your style right. And getting a box of items that are mostly misses is a pretty frustrating shopping experience.

If you aren’t familiar, Stitch Fix is a clothing and styling personal styling service. When you initially sign up, you take an in-depth survey that asks you about your clothing size, personal style, and price preferences. Your stylist handpicks five items based on your preferences within the survey. The fee for this service is $20, and that includes free shipping as well as free returns. If you keep any of the items they send you, you get to deduct the $20 fee from the total. If you keep all five items, you also get a 25% discount. Stitch Fix offers clothing for Men, Kids, Maternity, Petite, and Plus Size.

Below, you’ll find my review of my first Stitch Fix following their standard sign up and profile set up so you know exactly what to expect. And after that, I’ll share my hacks for how to make your first Stitch Fix even better than mine now that I’ve learned how to master Stitch Fix!

Stitch Fix Items

My Subscription Addiction paid for this Stitch Fix. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review products).

Each shipment comes with a free return bag. All you have to do is package up anything you want to return and send it back. Super easy.

When you first sign up for Stitch Fix, you’ll fill out a survey to give your stylist specifics on your size, style, clothing needs etc. And the best part is you can also leave notes for exactly what you are looking for. In my case, I told my stylist that I love maxi dresses and that I need bold tops that are good for filming YouTube videos. (That means eye-catching but not distracting.) As you can see on the note included from my stylist, she used that feedback!

And there are also cards for each piece to give you styling ideas.

This is the invoice that was sent. As you can see, it provides specifics on the brand, size, and price of each item. They also give instructions at the bottom for how to check out and either purchase or return your items. My total came to $253, but with the 25% off if I keep everything, it would be $189.75.

OK, here are the pieces:

Market & Spruce Hans Crochet Front Top – Cost to Keep $58

(Size Medium)

This top is fully lined on the torso, with see-through sleeves.

I like this as a new take on a basic white top. The fit is somewhat loose, but the crochet still gives it structure. So I get the comfort I love, and I think I could still dress this up for a more formal look.

Vigoss Colle Distressed Cropped Skinny Jean – Cost to Keep $68

(Size 6)

I LOVE a distressed jean, and I indicated that in my style profile, so I was very happy to see my stylist deliver! The fit is great too, and these jeans had the right amount of stretch. (But I just wish they were high-waisted! I’ll let my stylist know to only send high-waist styles for my next Fix.)

Urban Expressions Maison Whipstitch Trim Crossbody Bag – Cost to Keep $39

This purse features a zippered fold over section and a removable chain so you can also wear it as a clutch.

And a whipstitch finish on the edges:

In my style profile, I indicated that I wanted to try bags, but I picked the cheapest price range, and again, my stylist nailed it – I love the cross-body style. It has the hands-free convenience of the fanny pack, while still being pretty much considered fashionably acceptable by all.

Here it is on:

And I don’t have any taupe-colored accessories, so this fills in a hole in my wardrobe, too.

Papermoon Conner Lattice Top – Cost to Keep $34

(Size: Medium)

Eh, this top isn’t too exciting for me. It’s soft, but the one interesting detail is in the back:

And that means either an exposed bra, a bra challenge, or wearing a tank underneath this – none of which have the easy-to-wear tee vibe!

Papermoon Danyela Knit Maxi Dress – Cost to keep $54

(Size: Medium)

First, please excuse my paler-than-normal arms – I need to catch up on my self-tanning!

This elastic-waist dress fits well, but I wasn’t in love with it. For one thing, as I alluded to above, I’m somewhat lazy when it comes to clothes and bras, and usually, end up wearing the items I can wear with a traditional bra. That means items with necklines like these will stay in my closet with the tags on. I left a note on my account after seeing this dress that I’d like to see maxis with sleeves – hopefully, I get one next month!

Hacks for improving your first Stitch Fix:

  1. When you are filling out the style profile, be pickier than you think you should be. There’s a section with different body parts to let them know if you like to show them off, show them sometimes, keep them covered, etc. (Arms, torso, cleavage, legs, etc.) I was neutral on showing off my arms, but the reality is I don’t really like/wear sleeveless tops, so I should have just taken a firm no on that one. (You can always update your profile at any time, too.)
  2. On the final page of your style profile, you can leave detailed notes. Your stylist will read these, so make sure to get as specific as you can. If you’re going to an event and need an outfit for it, give all the details.
  3. Create a Pinterest board with outfits/styles you love. When you are filling out your style profile you can share this and it’s a great way to give your stylist a visual of what you like. This is the best way to make sure your stylist can visualize your style. If you have the time to do it, do not skip this step! (Check out my review of Stitch Fix once I gave my stylist a Pinterest board to see the difference.)
  4. Play Style Shuffle! On your account page, you can vote thumbs up or down on items. It’s fun and also helps add more data to your profile for your stylist to work with.

Lastly, one thing to keep in mind, even with these hacks, there’s still a chance that you’ll get an item or two that you don’t love. My last tip? Make sure to get very specific in your feedback about why you don’t like the item. Your stylist will read all this feedback when picking your next items, so make sure you give them as much info as possible!

  1. I have gotten 2 stitch fix boxes and have kept multiple pieces from both. Stopped because i wanted to lose some weight. Giving as much information as possible is the way to go!

  2. i have liked most of the items sent to me. Super comfortable.

  3. I want to be more adventurous with trying new styles, but I don’t know how. This will be a great box to get me started on feeling more stylish!

  4. I hate to shop for clothes, so Stitch Fix would be a lifesaver.

  5. Not a stitch fix member but would be excited to try. I wear pretty basic stuff, so it’d be nice to get more stylish options to wear to work and relaxed weekends.

  6. I’ve never tried Stitch Fix before but I would love some pretty maxi dresses!

  7. Love this service. My favorite outfits and the pieces I most get comments on are from stitch fix!

  8. I’m excited about being able to have a pinterest board that shows my style for the,. Great feature!

  9. I’ve never tried it. But I have less and less time to shop and would love the opportunity!

  10. I’ve received two boxes and kept all the pieces from both. My jeans by liver pool are my favorite. I can’t wait to get my next box!

  11. Thank you

  12. I am absolutely loving stitch fix and I got my husband hooked too! Received a pair of Tom’s in my last fix and they are like walking on pillows. I’m thrilled! My stylist totally gets me!

  13. I’ve never tried it but read all the reviews and it seems amazing!

  14. I’ve never tried Stitch Fix before. Since I’ll be wearing nursing clothes for the foreseeable future, if I win, I would let my husband or daughter use it. I know they would be thrilled. Thank you for the chance to win.

  15. I haven’t tried stich fix but could really use some fashion help. Lol. (T shirt and jeans are my go to.)

  16. I’m most interested in finding clothes tailored to my personal style and preferences!

  17. I live in the Midwest and it’s hard sometimes to find fashionable plus size clothing that fits well-this might be a good way to find that!

  18. They helped sent me my favorite (and only one of two) pair of jeans- Kut from the Kloth!

  19. I’ve never tried Stitch Fix but I’ve always wanted to. It’d be interesting to be pushed outside the box of what I’m comfortable, but I’m too chicken to do it on my own.

  20. I have not tried StitchFix but I think it might help me get out of my clothing “comfort zone”.

  21. They introduced me to Kut by the Kloth jeans, which are now my favorite, and always, miraculously fit me perfectly!

  22. I have had over 40 fixes and am still loving the fun of opening up that box! Stitch fix has seen me through 3 pregnancies over the past 6 years and all of the weight changes that come along with that. They have saved me SO much time and energy, being able to spend that precious time with my babies instead of inside a dressing room…My closet is filled with quality, unique and fun pieces that spark a whole lot of joy for me! 🙂

  23. I’ve received 3 fixes from Stitch Fix, and I haven’t absolutely loved any of them. I did keep a long floral maxi dress from one that I enjoy wearing occasionally. I know it takes several times for your stylist to really get to know what you want, so I’m willing to give it a few more tries. My boyfriend, on the other hand, gets good stuff from Stitch Fix pretty consistently!

  24. I would like to find some pants that fit my long legs.

  25. I haven’t gotten a box in a while, but past successes include my favorite dress, a great pair of Toms wedges, an amazing knit blazer, my favorite striped top, my first-ever denim jacket, and more than one great pair of jeans that magically fit!

  26. I got my first Stitch fix this week and am keeping everything! My stylist nailed it. Now I have some cute items for summer time!

  27. Never tried Stitch Fix, but love dresses

  28. Haven’t tried this subscription

  29. I haven’t tried Stitch Fix yet, but I’d be interested to try some clothes that can spruce up my wardrobe. My style is pretty simple and classic, but I wouldn’t mind trying pieces outside of my comfort zone. Might as well have a pro guide the way! 🙂

  30. I’ve never tried a subscription clothing box; I’m interested in dresses, dresses, dresses!

  31. I would like to try this simply because I’m lazy and want someone to do my shopping for me. 🙂

  32. I’ve only been able to afford one round so far, but have anxiously been awaiting the next time I can afford my fix. 🙂 The quality of the items was really good, and I was super surprised by what I ended up keeping – it honestly ended up being the opposite of what I had predicted prior to trying the pieces on. As long as you’re able to afford the fix, I’d say it’s definitely worth getting now and again!

  33. I recently got 2 boxes back to back. The first one was close, but no cigar. I kept one pair of pants that I really liked, and sent the rest back with very specific feedback (if the one top hadn’t been unwearable for me, I may have considered keeping the whole box, it totaled $150).

The next box I did keep, though one top was a bit of a puzzler as it looked more like scrubs, but I liked the color and with the discount it was pretty much free.

My stylist did a great job and I think boxes will keep getting more awesome as long as i keep communicating my wants/needs. I also keep a pretty large pinterest board

  34. You look great! I haven’t tried stitch fix or any other clothing subs. My weight has been fluctuating quite a bit since my last pregnancy and I’m super self conscious. I’d really like to find a pair of jeans that I just absolutely love.

  35. Always looking for my perfect Jeans but hate actually going to stores

  36. I love my Stitch Fix – I’ve received several items I would’ve never tried or looked twice at that I love. It’s taught me to be more open minded.

  37. I have never tried stitch fix. I have thought about trying it. I like ve reading the reviews and watching you tube reveals.

  38. I’ve never used stitch fix before, but this makes me think maybe I should! I love that maxi dress 😊

  39. I’ve gotten lots of good work clothes from Stitch Fix. For example, Margaret M. pants are very professional and comfortable.

  40. My first Fix arrives tomorrow!
I cheated though and looked to see what was coming! There is a gorgeous blazer and maxi dress that I am hoping work out. Especially the dress!
I signed up hoping to get some new work pieces and summery clothes.

I moved to Seattle from Orlando during the winter and only brought cold weather clothes with me then I bought a ton more cold weather clothes. I don’t have any summer clothes at all here and just haven’t been finding anything good at the malls!

  41. I’ve not tried it yet, but I’d love to try some new jeans and some sundresses.

  42. One of the reasons I love stitch fix is the pants fit like a glove. I’m a fairly petite woman so sometimes finding pants the right length can be difficult with that I think it’s worth the price tag. my stylist does a good job of sending me things that she knows I like and things that I might be interested in trying.

  43. Got a cute whimsical blouse with owls on it. Not something I’d pick out myself but I love it

  44. I’d love to try Stitchfix😊

  45. I love my stitch fixes! Sometimes I think oh that’s not my style, but then I try them on and perfect! I love all my stitch fix clothes

  46. I’ve been eyeing this subscription service and thinking about trying it. I would be most interested in finding a plus size maxi dress that isn’t too long, I’m 5’3″, and ankle strap low heeled sandals that fit my chunky ankles and are actually comfortable.

  47. I love stitch fix! I have been doing it as soon as they started carrying larger sizes as Dia and Co wasn’t cutting it for me. Receiving the box is like getting a present! I love to shop but it’s fun to see what your stylist picks out for you.

  48. Im interested in trying their jeans.

  49. I haven’t tried this before but would love to find some new dresses for the summer or cute tops and purses!

  50. I have never tried Stitchfix but it would definitely be great for my life right now. I have a newborn so I don’t have time to sleep, let alone shop. And it would be a pretty awesome self esteem booster to get some nice clothes.
