A few times a year, ModCloth announces their “Stylish Surprise”, where they sell select mystery items you at a deep discount. We're talking typically pricier pieces for around $10-$20! Stylish Surprise is kind of like the Mystery Bags I would periodically get at the candy store I used to g to as a kid. You choose the category and select the size, but otherwise, you don't know what you will receive until it arrives in the mail; hence the surprise! It can be a bit of a gamble because you can get anything from their wide range of styles and aesthetics, but that is the fun of it all!

open Modcloth Stylish Surprise Box

FYI - no boxes are currently available for purchase. Stylish Surprises sell out incredibly fast! I went onto their site a few hours after it was announced and there were categories already sold out. July’s came and went rather quickly. The great thing about Stylish Surprise, though, is there always seems to be another one right around the corner.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes)

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Plus Size Clothing and Jewelry Unboxing

As with normal ModCloth orders, the box comes with an invoice, though it gives you the price you paid for the Stylish Surprise itself; not the original cost of the items you get. I was supposed to get a top, dress, and jewelry item, but instead was sent two tops and a jewelry item. I would have loved to get the dress I was supposed to, so this is a bit of a bummer! I contacted their customer service about this mix-up and received a $25 credit for the dress/top mix-up.

Also, a cute post card is included to let you know who selected and packed your items. J.G, I have a bone to pick with you! I am kidding. Maybe.

Stylish Surprise Top/Outerwear: Snappy Study Blazer in Umbrellas by Modcloth, Size 2x —Retail Value $79.99 (found here for $24.97)

I rarely wear blazers due to how broad my shoulders are, but the cut of this jacket is rather flattering. It is not bulky and does not give me linebacker shoulders like most blazers I have tried in the past. The fabric is rather lightweight, so this can easily be worn in summer months at the office and beyond! However, I do not like the print. I would prefer it to be plain or possibly have stripes or dots for a design. I paired this blazer with cut off shorts from my October Stylish Surprise box, a striped shirt, and white cat eye glasses from Pinup in a Pack (review coming soon!). This blazer would look amazing paired with a solid colored dress or a yellow pussy-bow blouse and high waist, dark rinse, skinny leg jeans, and heels.

Stylish Surprise Top: Noticeably Noble Knit Top in Grey, Size 2x — Retail Value $39.00 (found here for $11.97)

Honestly, when I unboxed this, I was rather indifferent about this piece. Upon trying it on, I was impressed by how flattering this piece looked. The fabric is rather stretchy and soft. The ruffles both at the wrist and waist are a cute touch. This is far and away my favorite piece in the box. I paired this top with dark denim jeans, the necklace included in my Stylish Surprise, and a pair of faux cork, orange platform heels to tie in with the warm tones of the necklace.

Stylish Surprise Jewelry: Just What I Beaded in Warm — Retail Value $19.00 (found here for $9.99)

Oh, why did you do me so dirty? First, you forgot my dress and then you packed me this necklace. Don’t get me wrong, I do like aspects of this necklace. I have quite a few pairs of dangly earrings featuring similar rope covered beads. They were a big trend last summer and have carried on into this year as well. However, I am not feeling the combo of these beads with the clear abstract plastic beads and the wooden beads. Just not my style or cup of tea, but I do appreciate the warm tones and the how lightweight and easy this piece is to wear. Even though I am not a fan, doesn’t mean that you won’t be! This would look great paired with a striped jumpsuit and canvas, platform espadrilles for a sassy, yet modest summer look!

Verdict: This Stylish Surprise was not the best I have received. Stylish Surprise is always a roll of the dice, but this is the first time I was sent an item in error. The styles selected for me weren’t necessarily my style, but fortunately, I do like the grey, ruffled sweater included for me this time around. Though this Stylish Surprise was a bit of a disappointment, I still look forward to the next one. I just might hit the jackpot, you never know!

I paid $50 plus $7.99 shipping for the $25 Dress, $15 Top, and $10 Jewelry Style Surprises, but received a $25 credit for the dress mix up. I received $137.99 worth of items ($46.93 with sale prices).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, Stylish Surprise is over, but it happens a few times a year so one might be right around the corner!

I didn’t have very good luck with this round of Stylish Surprises. I ordered a dress, top, bottom, jewelry and non-clothing item. The dress and skirt were waaaay too short. The top was labeled incorrectly. (I ordered a 3x what arrived was an XL. Seriously cheesed off about that because it was a cute chambray top.) Can’t return the clothes so they all went to the donation pile. The jewelry is a cute pair of unicorn stud earrings. (Kept those.) And the non-clothing item is a pink kitty notebook. I think next time I’ll pass on this and order something that I want.

I got two cute dresses (yay!) one plaid and one mint, but then a hugely ugly mustard yellow infinity scarf, an astronaut themed sweatshirt that someone else would probably love but is so not me, and …. fox paper dolls? These are home decor? I am truly perplexed.

This was my first go ay the stylish surprise and I think my last. LOL. Nice dresses though.

I got my box and I think I got lucky.

Fervour Timeless Pleated Dress- don’t love it but it’s cute and will be easy to swap

Collectif Barbara Pom Pom Sweater- more quirky than my typical style but is soft and flattering.

Rock Steady Gray Bugle Joy…winner! I love swing skirts and have wanted a gray skirt for a while.

Overall, pretty happy with my box.

My one and only attempt at Stylish Surprise was such a hilariously bad disaster that I just can’t risk it again, but I LOVE seeing what other people get.

I am surprised you aren’t keen on the blazer and the necklace. The print on the blazer is pretty unique and the necklace matches your coloring perfectly.

Mine should arrive tomorrow. I’m nervous. Lol.

I feel like the person who picked my order was channeling my soul!

I received a super cute liza luxe A-line dress, an astronaut necklace (I actually squealed when I opened this), a pink pussy hat inspired woman empowerment journal, and a really cute pair of spring step l’artiste shoes that are very comfortable, and high quality.

I got very lucky. I hope lots of you did as well! Best I can tell I got around $200 of stuff for $65. Not bad!

I scored on this stylish surprise. I bought the dress, home, and accessories and received a nacho kit that included a cookbook, baking mat, and cheese grater. A lovely scarf for fall, and an adorable poodle dress https://www.modcloth.com/shop/dresses/i-rest-my-grace-a-line-dress-in-poodles/152237.html

For the first time I mostly lucked out!!! I ordered a dress, accessory and home decor. The dress is pretty, mauve chiffon with pleats, and actually fits!!! But as I have shopped with ModCloth in the past I finally learned to size up on dresses and it paid off. The accessory is actually a pretty purse, rectangle gold that shimmers iridescent rose gold, that matches the dress 🙂
The only bad item ended up being the home decor, its a desk sign that says “Cat Hair, Don’t Care”, if I owned a cat perhaps I would like it more? But the dress and purse made up for it. The first time out of 4 tries I have been happy and will actually wear the items!

Thanks for the link for the sweater! They only have it now in olive; and, unfortunately, they have L and XXL, but not the XL I would need. But if you want it in olive…

Seattleites here… I want that blazer, it’s so cute! I can see why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, though!

I think you did really well considering you got pieces you maybe didn’t like, but that actually fit! Some of us masochists keep paying Modcloth for boxes of items that are ill-fitting, totally not our style, or not worth as much as our Stylish Surprise cost. Yet we keep trying.

Allison

It just ain’t fair. How come all I ever get is prom dresses? And terrible thin tank tops with cutesy slogans?

I think Modcloth knows who the influencers are. Haley always received nice/higher value pieces too.

Allison, I’m writing my review of my items from this time and I’m not loving them as much as my past boxes 😂 I’m jealous of Nicole’s items too!!

As usual I was a little bummed by my items from this Stylish Surprise. For the first time I was able to get some apartment/home decor items and they were really love value. I did actually also receive the same necklace as you and I really like it! I think it will pair well with some of my maroon fall sweaters.

Elise

Love your new haircut! I’ve never ordered a stylish surprise, it’s just too much of a roll of the dice for me. high probability of getting a cutesy print like the blazer you got, though I do actually like that one!

MzBev

I think you look great with that necklace! I was surprised you didn’t like it. It goes well with your hair color and just “fits” you! (hopefully you get what I’m saying. lol) Its bold and colorful and matches your hair! so to speak. 🙂

Nicole Rieder

MzBev, I love the warm tones for sure! I usually gravitate towards oranges, reds, and yellows so the rusts and coral shades do work in that respect. I just wasn’t in love with the style itself this time around. I know I can be very picky at instances! Hahaha

Erin

Love the sweater and the blazer, although I feel you on the print. Still, I think you scored!

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Erin, the cut on that blazer is sooooo flattering. I feel I didnt emphasize how cute the cut is. But I was not a fan of the print. I would have even dug a retro paisley print over the umbrellas.

Lizc

I think the necklace looks great with your coloring and I love the blazer. The sweater looks great on you too! I tried their surprise box last year and didn’t do very well, so I passed this time, but looking at that blazer my never again surprise package resolve is melting. I did just send for the Unique Vintage catch of the day surprises, so my resistance isn’t very good.

katie

Lizc, Thank you for the information on The Unique Vintage Catch of the day! I didn’t want to try ModCloth again but I will try Unique😍.

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Lizc, OH yeah, for the price it is worth a go of it for sure with the stylish surprise. My last two ones were hits for sure! And OMG I had no idea unique vintage did something similar! My ears perked up when you said that! Hahaha

Lauren

I think you scored on the tops – both very cute and flattering!

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Thanks, Lauren! 😊

Christina

But you look so cute in everything! Including the necklace!

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Awe thanks, Christina! I just didn’t feel they were my style per se. But that is okay!

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

Nicole, the cut and style of the gray top looks amazing on you! You just need a brighter color. Gray does not match your personality.

Nicole Rieder

Awe Thanks, Jennifer! This top in a mustard would have been SUPER CUTE. Or even an olive!
