ModCloth Stylish Surprise

A few times a year, ModCloth announces their “Stylish Surprise”, where they sell select mystery items you at a deep discount. We're talking typically pricier pieces for around $10-$20! Stylish Surprise is kind of like the Mystery Bags I would periodically get at the candy store I used to g to as a kid. You choose the category and select the size, but otherwise, you don't know what you will receive until it arrives in the mail; hence the surprise! It can be a bit of a gamble because you can get anything from their wide range of styles and aesthetics, but that is the fun of it all!

Stylish Surprise sell out incredibly fast! I went onto their site a few hours after it was announced and apartment, shoes, and accessories were all sold out at that point. Last time I checked the site, it seems it has ended. July’s lasted over a week, so I am surprised how quickly this one went. The great thing about Stylish Surprise, though, is there always seems to be another one right around the corner.

As with normal Mod Cloth orders, the box comes with an invoice, though it gives you the price you paid for the Stylish Surprise itself; not the original cost of the items you get. I ended up getting a dress, swimsuit, top, and bottoms this time around. I missed shoes this time around again like my last review for Stylish Surprise, but I still got a lot; so I really can’t complain!

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Bottoms: Eunina Mina Mid Rise Cuffed Shortie, Size 3xl - Cost $15; Value $39.99? (similar style by brand found here in straight sizes. I found in alternative plus size style here.)

I think the last time I wore a pair of shorts, aside from bike shorts under dresses and skirts, was in high school. I didn’t feel comfortable in them physically--- THE CHUB RUB STRUGGLE IS REAL! I know all of you bodacious babes know what I am talking about! Shorts can be a painful option, but I have been toying with getting a pair since I got my ChafeZone Chub Rub stick at CurvyCon (it is life changing!). I feel like Modcloth must have read my mind by sending these perfect jorts my way! I was skeptical that these would fit, but I was able to pull them up with ease. These shorts have a nice stretch to them but aren’t too thin or flimsy either. The mid-rise cut is amazing too and hits me in my midsection perfectly! Even though the weather is unseasonably warm this fall, I wanted to style these jean shorts for a cooler weather look with tights and boots (to be featured in my ShoeDazzle review coming soon!). I topped the outfit off with jewelry from Jewelry Subscription box (review coming soon also!), western style belt, and a floppy hat. This witchy look may be my new fall go to!

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Swimsuit by Girlhowdy, Size 3x (Labeled as 26) Cost $15; Value $89.99 (Similar style found here)

Nothing says warm weather like some pastel plaid, am I right? The print reminds me of a tablecloth and makes me want to pack a picnic basket. This swimsuit has a very retro pin-up style with the halter top, ruched sides, and low cut legs. The only negative was that there was no support in the chest. It could have been the stretch fabric or that I may have needed a smaller size. I felt as though I was going to plop out of the top at any minute; which does not make me confident for how my bits will stay in place while prancing about a pool. I opted to show this swimsuit worn as a bodysuit top with my tapered denim jeans, saddle shoes, and mustard yellow and cream cat eye sunglasses for a cutesy Indian Summer look.

Stylish Surprise Top by Hell Bunny, Size 3xl—Cost $15; Value $39.99? (similar style found here.)

Hell Bunny is a brand I rarely can fit myself into. They are notoriously known as a brand to size up in because an XXL may fit more like a 14/16. This top in a 3x actually does fit me due to the stretchy knit cotton fabric. I like the incredibly retro feel of the top; it looks like something that could have been in Wanda from Cry Baby’s closet. I felt compelled to pair this aqua polka dot accented top with saddle shoes and my faux leather skirt for that John Waters movie character look I always aim for. The only issue I have with the top is what I do with most off shoulder tops: my broad shoulders make the top roll. I had to have my photographer (aka my dad) make sure the seam wasn’t exposed a few times. Otherwise, this is a cute top and at the price of fifteen bucks, you can’t beat it!

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Dress by Geode, Size 4x—Cost $20, Value Unkown

I have heard about this phenomenon of commenters receiving wedding dresses in their Stylish Surprise. One even said they got not one wedding dress, but THREE. Well, I apparently am joining this club as well! I had to chuckle upon seeing it in the box initially! This dress is a big pile of tulle on me. I had opted for the 4x since my last Stylish Surprise in a 3x was a bit snug; but this dress is rather oversized on me, sadly. The one thing I really like is the sweetheart neckline, but I do not like the skirt of the dress’s design. The dotted tulle was felt very heavy and itchy. The layering on the skirt did not wow me either. However, getting a wedding dress at $20 is a crazy great deal, regardless of whether I need or want one. Heck, for $20 bucks you could do an Andi from Pretty in Pink and Frankenstein this with another dress if you are tremendously crafty. Go for it! The fabric alone is more than $20! Halloween is right around the corner and this could always be used as a costume as well. For the styling, I was inspired by a mix of  Madonna and Tiffany from Bride of Chucky because… why not?!

Verdict: This Stylish Surprise was a real mixed bag! I scored big time with the denim shorts and Hell Bunny top, but the plaid swimsuit and wedding dress were definite low points. Both the swimsuit and the wedding dress were a bit too big for me, and I have no use for a wedding gown at this time. With that being said, for $60 and expedited shipping, I still came out on top! My shorts and the top alone would have been $80, so to get four items for $60 is a real deal. Stylish Surprise is a real roll of the dice at times, but I still find it worth the gamble!

The wedding dresses transformed into zombie brides are an awesome way to repurpose the unwanted dresses!

Nicole Rieder

Totally agree, SquirrellyGirl! It could definitely be used in some great costumes, that is for sure!

I always look forward to seeing your reviews, Nicole.

It takes a lot of talent to take a single item of clothing and style it into an enviable outfit. You do a fantastic job!

I would LOVE to get an obnoxious wedding dress for $20 just to use as a corpse bride costume or something. I would have some fun with that! That top is PERFECT for you! I LOVE your reviews! Chub rub, hahahaha! I’ve become bodacious in the last few years, and I didn’t know that was a thing until recently. I feel like I’ve joined a club, lol. Too funny!

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Oh yes! Chub Rub is a real thing! I mean, it happens when your thighs are bffs, what can I say? hahaha. But that ChafeZone stick is AWESOME! If you do try it, let me know if it works for you, Rie!

it is a pretty good deal for a wedding dress! I was thinking of turning it into a costume too, but I feel like I would love to give it to anyone in need for a wedding gown. Nice thing is it can definitely be altered and embellished further for more personalized touches. I really love some of the wedding dresses on the Modcloth site tbh! Some adorable retro styled ones.

Thanks for checking out my review and welcome to club! :o)

A while ago I commented that you are my idol. Now you are also my hero. In the stone age when I was in school, girls had to wear dresses. No one seemed to understand how painful my inner thigh irritation was. Eventually they invented pantyhose which at least helped. Then I found pettipants (pants slip). And finally I was old enough to rebel and wear shorts or pants under my dresses. The rules finally changed in schools after I left but I still had to wear dresses to work. Now I am retired but thanks to your information above I have found products available that will allow be to wear a dress should I ever want to. Thank you.

Nicole Rieder

Awwwwe Rachelle! You are so dang sweet! I am so glad to steer you towards such a good product. It really works so amazingly. I usually wear bike shorts under certain skirts and dresses, but I don’t even need them with ChafeZone’s Chub Rub stick. You will have to let me know if it works as well for you as it has for me!

OMG I ordered a dress from stylish surprise that will get here today I hope it’s not a wedding dress. I did use a 20% off for my 2 items so at least I’m only out $35 for whatever dress and shirt I get.

Nicole Rieder

$35 isn’t bad at all! I wonder if you got a wedding gown too!

Vanessa

OOH, I would love to trade you for the wedding dress! I have a few different 4x and 3x dresses from this and previous stylish surprises. I have https://www.modcloth.com/shop/panache-priority-a-line-dress/137350.html in 3x, I have https://www.modcloth.com/shop/hidden/surprise-party-honoree-midi-dress/149526.html in 4x (but it’s definitely a size 26w) , https://www.modcloth.com/shop/sights-and-soundtracks-a-line-dress/10070801.html in 4x. https://www.modcloth.com/shop/hidden/kheer-to-join-us%3F-shirt-dress/140317.html in 4x. OH so and also https://www.modcloth.com/shop/hidden/sweet-sunday-midi-dress/150383.html in 4x. Then I have some tops also… I have an awesome plaid shirt you would ROCK https://www.modcloth.com/shop/blouses/at-home-editor-plaid-tunic/144907.html in 4x. Also https://www.modcloth.com/shop/stand-your-fairground-tank-top/10075238.html in 4x and https://www.modcloth.com/shop/hidden/miami-moments-top/142936.html?dwvar_142936_color=BLUMU Just let me know! Great review BTW! Aren’t these stylish surprises fun??! It’s like a box of chocolates in the movies (because in real life you CAN know what you’re gonna get if you use the handy guide that comes with the chocolates, hehe) but with stylish surprise, no never know!

Hey, thanks Vanessa! Thanks for checking out my review. Stylish Surprise is a lot of fun for sure!

You got some really adorable things! I am so in between sizes these days that I am not sure if I should opt for any 4x sizes, unless they seem to be made smaller. It is making online shopping that much more of a gamble, I tell ya! hahaha

Reply ButtonReply

Vanessa

Nicole, I hear ya on that! It’s crazy when vendors carry numerous brands and some seem to go by us sizing while some go by european. It’s even WORSE when you try shopping on amazon! Most things use the asian sizing system and 4x is like… size 14 or something. I think I figured it out once and I was like size 1millionX.

The panache priority dress I have is size 3X and is size accurate (plus it’s adorable. just didn’t come with the belt.) and the surprise party honoree dress says 4x but is known to run small. The measurements put it right at size 26w. So both of those dresses would fit like 3x. I don’t have those 2 listed for swap but will list anything you’re interested in. My swap profile is: https://boxes.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/users/69010/profile . I actually have a cute top that says size 4x that runs small that’s listed on here for swap. It’s https://swap.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/item/123764/modcloth-pros-and-convertibles-button-up-top-in-chambray-plus-size-3x-4x. OH YEAH! I did get some 4X Hell Bunny Pants (which DEFINITELY run small… I think the reviews said 4x fits more like upper 2X in size. But they are stretchy. Pointless for me to even try them though. Here’s the link: https://www.modcloth.com/shop/hidden/hell-bunny-jive-got-a-feeling-pants/136506.html – in color black dots.

P.S. No pressure or anything. I just know you were not wanting the wedding dress, plus it’s way big on you (you skinny minnie!)

P.S.S. WHERE did you get your saddle shoes??!! I LOVE THEM… BOTH pair!

RaeKatz

Nicole: Where did you get those jeans?!? I need those in my life right now. Your reviews are the best! I love how upbeat and happy you look in all your pictures. Thank you for helping me feel more comfortable about my own body. (^-^)/
