Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag.

This is one of Liz’s top recommendations if you are looking for a beauty box - the value and sample sizes are amazing. (Check out our list of the Top Beauty Boxes for 2017 and our reviews of Cheap Subscription Boxes for more recommendations!)

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Ipsy July 2018 Review

My bag this month features all makeup products. Let’s see what I got!

The theme for this month is “Dive into Summer”. The included info card gives some summer beauty tips and info on products available in the Ipsy Shopper.

Each month, ipsy subscribers get a makeup bag in addition to their 5 items.

This month, subscribers will receive this holographic aqua pouch. It feels like it would be the perfect material to throw in your pool or beach bag. The zipper is rubberized too so hopefully it will keep sand out.

IBY Eyeshadow Fluff Brush -

IBY Eyeshadow Fluff Brush - Retail Value $8

This vegan eyeshadow brush has a flat, rounded shape with soft bristles. It can be used to pack shadow onto the lid but has just enough fluffiness to be able to blend with it too. It would also work for a precise highlight or concealer brush.

Sugar Cosmetics Stroke of Genius Heavy Duty Kohl in Green Light - Retail Value $13.99

I love colored liners but I can't say I’ve played around with green very much. This is a beautiful metallic emerald liner that has a gel-like consistency and glides on without tugging at all. It doesn’t smudge or fade and is supposedly waterproof (though I didn’t test that). I’m loving how it looks with the eyeshadow I received this month (see below).

Ofra Cosmetics Eyeshadow Pan in Exquisite, 4g - Retail Value $12

This sparkly black shade didn’t swatch with a lot of pigment but it applied beautifully to my lid. The sparkle is subtle but can be amped up by dampening your brush. I didn’t have any creasing or fallout and it’s easy to blend. These pans are perfect for popping into a magnetic palette and help cut down on excess packaging.

BKR The Water Balm - 2.4g Estimated Value $10.15 (buy a 5.2g balm for $22)

Known for their trendy glass water bottles, BKR added to their product line with this super hydrating balm. It is thick and emollient without being sticky. It leaves a glossy finish and is perfect by itself or under/over lip color to gloss it up. At just under half of the full size, this deluxe sample is perfect to throw in your bag but pretty enough to leave on your vanity.

Mellow Cosmetics Creamy Matte Lipstick in Candy Floss -

Mellow Cosmetics Creamy Matte Lipstick in Candy Floss - Retail Value $15

I love Mellow’s lipstick formulas and this one is no exception. The color is rich and opaque and has a matte finish without looking dry. Candy Floss is a vibrant, cool-toned fuschia that’s not for the faint of heart. I never have an issue with feathering and the color stays put for a surprisingly long time even though some of it transfers to my coffee cups.

Swatches (from left to right): Mellow lipstick, BKR Water Balm, Sugar Eyeliner, and Ofra Eyeshadow.

I’m excited that all of the products can be put together to create a look this month. Before starting my makeup, I swiped on some of the BKR balm to hydrate my super chapped lips. They instantly felt and looked better. For my eyes, I blended the Ofra shadow all over the lid and concentrated it onto the outer corners to add depth. Then I lined my top lid with a line of the green Sugar liner. For my lips, I blotted off the excess balm and applied a layer of the Mellow lipstick. This look is not normal for me but I think it’s fun and great for summer.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $59.14 which is great for $10. I’m loving all of my items this month and am glad to see some shades other than gold and nude. Ipsy is a great way to try new products without much risk and I hope next month includes more new products and brands.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up in this month, you’ll get next month’s box as your first box. (Check out our Ipsy Spoilers to see what’s coming up next)

Good to know: Ipsy sends out variations. You may get a completely different bag than me.

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • IBY Brush - $1.35
  • Sugar Eyeliner - $2.37
  • Ofra Shadow - $2.03
  • BKR Water Balm - $1.72
  • Mellow Lipstick - $2.54
  • Bag – Not counted toward value

Hey all, I have not received my bag yet, but I wanted to know if any of you makeup experts had opinions on what I am receiving:
Lip Gloss in the Affair by Give Them Lala Beauty, Rosehip Night Serim by Mintpiar, Studio Concealer by Smashbox, pressed eye shadow in Harmony by Ella Eden, and Oasis Ultra Hydrating Cream by H2O+ Beauty. Any input is greatly appreciated! Anyone else getting the same products?

You have good items: the Smashbox concealer, the Lala Beauty gloss, the hydrating cream from H2O is tiny but I just tried it and is quite nice (i have dry skin). The first two items the gloss and concealer makes your bag a good one in my opinion. You will see in comments people either love or hat their bag, and it’s hard to get 2 items that you love.

Everything looks great on you! Good review. I also got the Mellow lipstick and agree that it’s a great formula but unfortunately the color is all wrong for me. I may be able to get some use by dabbing a little on and blending it with another shade. I’m just not a bright pink kinda person. It’s a shame because I also got a neon pink nail polish and I’m not sure I’ll use it. I got the green eyeliner, too, and really like it. It’s unique and goes on well. I got Ofra in Exquisite as well. I’ve tried Ofra eyeshadows before and the formula really irritates my eyes. My final item was a perfume in Vanilla Blackberry, and I thought I’d love it but it doesn’t smell good to me at all. It smells artificial and too sweet for my taste. I get ipsy to try/discover new products so I’m happy with my bag this month even though I may not use most of the items.

I really do Love my Ipsy bags samples😍, But when I look at ALL the samples list for the month it looks like I get the complete opposite of what my beauty profile preference choices are.🙄🤨A few examples are, I have always had eyebrows checked for one of my choice preferences but I didn’t get the eyebrow pencil and I do NOT have eyeshadow checked but I always get an eyeshadow sample and Yes I got another eyeshadow sample this month. I have perfumes checked as always wanting perfume samples but I never get a perfume sample and there are 2 perfume samples in the July All samples list, and my one choice concern I have checked is Dark Circles & under eye puffiness but I didn’t get the HERMINERALS 24K Gold Eye Mask thats in the July samples. In fact over the 2 yrs I have been subscribed I have gotten One sample for under eyes. I would understand if there wasn’t a sample that matched any of my choice preferences in the All Sample List for the month but usually every month there are samples that match my choice preferences but I don’t get them. I totally understand that it’s about trying New things but shouldn’t it be a little closer to our choices that we check?? If Not then why do we have preference choices? I’m just curious to why this is and if there is an actual reason or if it’s about just filling the bags and shipping them out…

I got the same eye shadow and I am so upset with it. Mine swatched worse than yours. No pigment, didn’t blend out and so much fall out. Waste of a product if you ask me. I complained to ipsy about this product, still waiting to hear back from them

Abigail

i received the red fondant liquid lip (ughhh)

Lisa

I am getting the Ofra shadow and the eyeliner my shipping email showed black and green not sure how accurate that is but since most people got black I probably will too . I am not sure how I feel about it yet. I like pitch black eye shadows but I also like silvers and gray so might work out.

Lisa

It came and yep I got black shadow and green eye liner. Oh well I always forget about the things in my z palette anyway.

Irina

Thanks God, I didn’t received that box. Everything looks so unuseful to me but looks greate on you

Christy

I got this exact bag!!!! I haven’t played with the shadow yet because the black was intimidating lol. But it looks amazing on you!! And that green liner…… Swoon!!

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany Waldorf

Hi Christy! You just need a little of the black shadow to start with, blend it out, and add more where you need. If you want it to be really intense (or to use it as a liner) you can wet your brush and pat it on. You might get more sparkle that way too.

I love that MSA does two reviews of ipsy per month, since they have so many different products! I’d love a third review, too! I got the black Ofra shadow and swapped to get the green eyeliner and that gorg lip, and this is the kind of look I was thinking of, since I love fuchsia, green, and black together.

I have never tried putting on lip balm right before lip color, though my poor lips could sure use it. For those of you who have done that, how long do you leave it on before blotting and then applying the color?

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

It depends on the balm and lip item for me. For super hydrating balms that soak in fast I let it sit 30 sec to a minute then apply cream lipstick – longer if I will be using a liquid lip. For chapstick, I let it sit about 10 minutes and do my other makeup, then blot. Or, I’ll put chapstick on in the house and do my makeup in the car a lot later, no blotting needed.

Reply ButtonReply

Christy

I usually do a balm first and let it sit while I’m getting ready (moisturizer, primer, get dressed, feed my cats lol) and if it’s not fully absorbed by then, blot off the extra.

Sharyn

Looking at that assortment of colors I thought – no way! But they look fantastic together and the whole thing just works. Great job! 👌🏼

Reply ButtonReply

Nan

Everything looks great on you! I never would have dreamed of using a black shadow or a green liner before now.

Reply ButtonReply

Juliane

Very nice! You look so pretty! You only used the Ofra Shadow on your lids, no other shades?

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany Waldorf

Thanks so much, Juliane! Yes! Isn’t that crazy. Just blending and adding a little at a time. I could have even used it as a liner if I wanted. I kept a highlighter at hand in case I needed to tone the black down, but only ended up putting a little on the very inner corner.

Jeannie

You look beautiful!

Melissa

All of these items flatter you so well! I thought, no way those items go together, and then your full face is such a look.

Carolann

I received the same shadow, lipstick, and eyeliner! I’m happy to get shades that push me outside of my comfort level. These were fun to play with.

I havent received my ipsy yet…. but i have been enjoying some.of the products that i have been getting since Oct.2017… i just started sephora 3 months and like them too. I wish ipsy would do a limited edition makeup bag with all full sizes…. i think that some.of their customers would return for a special limited edition box or boxes…..
