Go Native! July 2018 Review

Go Native info card

The front of the info card this month teaches us the Hawaiian word "makai" which is a directional word telling us to look at the ocean. It also talks about Ho'oulu Aina, the featured native organization.

other side of Go Native info card

On the flipside, you'll find a list of the items and a short description of each.

Ho'oulu Aina Natural Pareau Ho'oulu Aina Natural Pareau on model

Ho'oulu Aina Natural Pareau

I immediately loved the colors of this large pareau (aka sarong or coverup). Even though I only wear neutrals, the bright turquoise with lavender ink is so fun and summery. The thin cotton is lightweight so it will keep your skin protected from the sun but won't hinder you from feeling the cool breeze that may blow by. I have this simply tied around my waist, but there are a billion ways to wear it, or you can even use it as a beach blanket or canopy.

Mamalani Ke'ala Lemongrass Natural Deodorant back of Mamalani Ke'ala Lemongrass Natural Deodorant Mamalani Ke'ala Lemongrass Natural Deodorant with lid off

Mamalani Ke'ala Lemongrass Natural Deodorant - Retail Value $12.00

Lemongrass is one of my favorite scents of all time so I love this natural deodorant stick! This is made without aluminum so while it may not prevent you from sweating, it's going to keep you smelling nice and fresh. I'm going to pop this in my desk at work for those mornings where I rush out the door and forget to put deodorant on! It happens, people!

Hawaiian Medicinals Clear Sunscreen Stick back of Hawaiian Medicinals Clear Sunscreen Stick Hawaiian Medicinals Clear Sunscreen Stick with lid off

Hawaiian Medicinals Clear Sunscreen Stick - Retail Value $14.00 (found here for $12.00)

I'm a little surprised to see a sunscreen stick this month since we just got one last month, however, the one last month was tinted (although I didn't see too much of a pigment when spread on), while this one is clear. Tis the season, I suppose! I can toss this one my bag or leave it at home to cover my bases. Just last week I found myself wandering around without sunblock like a dummy and ended up getting sunburn. This stick is made with beeswax which helps keep the sunscreen on while participating in water (or sweaty) activities.

Kunoa Hawaiian Grown Beef Bar back of Kunoa Hawaiian Grown Beef Bar

Kunoa Hawaiian Grown Beef Bar - Buy a box of 12 for $42.00 (found here for $38.28)

It's not super often that Go Native includes edible items, but when they do they're always fantastic. Here we have a Hawaiian-raised beef bar from Kunoa. I thoroughly enjoyed this hormone and additive-free meat that was a little peppery as well as a little sweet. More, please!

My Manoa Natural Surf Wax back of My Manoa Natural Surf Wax

My Manoa Natural Surf Wax - Estimated Value $7.50 (Buy a pack of 2 for $15.00)

The final item from the box is a lemon-scented surf wax from My Manoa. This is certainly an item that is hit or miss and since I don't surf, it has to be a miss for me. Although surf wax may have other uses for those of us not near an ocean, they didn't include it on the info card. The wax is 100% organic which is apparently a good idea since it comes in contact with your skin a lot while surfing and has the potential to get absorbed while catching a wave.

Verdict: This month's Go Native! sent me five items for $41.60 ($37.00 + $4.60 shipping) which makes each one less than $9.00 each. While the beef stick and surf wax are under that, the other 3 items are above, so it sort of evens out. The deodorant and sunscreen will get the most use from me and the beef stick is already gone! The surf wax was, unfortunately, a swing and a miss unless I find alternate ways to use it that don't involve a surfboard. While the pareau isn't something I'll wear much, it will be a nice thing to have to toss over my shoulders if I head to the beach or pool.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but their cutoff date is the 15th to receive the following month so order today to receive August as your first month.

Value Breakdown: At $37.00 a month + $4.60 shipping for this box, you're paying $8.32 per item.

“forget to put deodorant on! It happens, people!” Oh yes, yes it does! I have a mini stocked bathroom here at work because it isn’t the only thing I forget. It gets worse as I get older. I forgot perfume this morning.

All natural would be healthier for the ocean waters. My grandson would have loved the wax.
