Birchbox The Fun With Fragrance Kit Review

Here is the info sheet detailing the products included!

TOCCA Nourishing Body Scrub in Bianca, 1 oz – Estimated Value $4.71 (buy the full-size version for $32)

I love TOCCA hand creams but I believe this is the first time I have had the chance to try the scrub! This provided a gentle exfoliation while still being hydrating thanks to the beeswax and shea butter, and I really loved the light and delicate scent of the green tea and lemon. The full-size version of this is a little pricey, but this would make an awesome gift to someone who appreciates really high-quality skincare and fragrance (and if that someone is you, I totally believe in treating yourself).

TOCCA Nourishing Body Scrub in Bianca, 1 oz

TOCCA Cleopatra Eau de Parfum, 0.17 oz – Estimated Value $7.20 (buy the full-size version for $72)

There was no size listed on this perfume, so my size and the estimated value is based on my guesstimation. That being said, I love this perfume! The grapefruit and peach scents were what I really picked up on and as a lover of citrus and peach that was a heavenly combo. The backnotes of vanilla musk really rounded out the scent, and it is definitely a scent I could see a strong woman like Cleopatra wearing!

By Rosie Jane James Perfume Oil, 0.17 oz –  Retail Value $40

I had to do a double take on this one—I thought it was a typo when I saw Birchbox said this 0.17-ounce rollerball retails for $40! It’s right there in black and white, however, so this means we are over the cost of the box alone with this product. The fig and gardenia on this perfume combine for a really lovely scent that is both fruity and floral at the same time, and it makes me feel like I am in a garden surrounded by flowers and fruit trees. This also has an oil base which means the scent lasts all day (which is exactly what I want), and it is definitely a strong fragrance. It is both feminine and assertive at the same time, and I am digging it.

CLEAN Reserve Smoked Vetiver Eau de Parfum, 0.17 oz

CLEAN Reserve Smoked Vetiver Eau de Parfum, 0.17 oz – Estimated Value $4.75 (buy the full-size version for $95)

I much prefer sprays to roll-ons, so I am happy this is in a neat spray bottle—I love wood lid! I would say that this scent leans a touch masculine thanks to the woody, spicy scent. It isn’t a guy’s cologne, but it definitely isn’t a scent I would associate with being feminine and delicate. I actually love it though—the combination of wood, bamboo, vetiver, and pear is a scent that actually makes me feel really sexy! This is another perfume that lasts throughout the day, and I love that this is a perfume I want to both display and carry in my purse for perfume touch-ups.

Solinotes Paris Fleur de Cerisier Eau de Parfum, 0.5 oz – Estimated Value $5.88 (buy the full-size version for $20

This perfume is very fresh and sweet smelling thanks the cherry blossom as the dominant scent, and the lemon and raspberry notes compliment it well. The scent didn’t last as long as I prefer my scents to last, but it smells so good I don’t mind horribly that I need to reapply it. The scent reminds me of a raspberry lemonade, and that is definitely a vibe I want to embody during the summer time.

Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume Eau de Parfum, 0.17 oz

Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume Eau de Parfum, 0.17 oz – Estimated Value $6.95 (buy the full-size version for $135)

I did some research on this perfume since the only scent note is Cetalox. Cetalox is the synthetic version of ambergris, which is the intestinal fluid of a sperm whale. Apparently, the digestive tracts of sperm whales create delicious scents, as ambergris is a big ingredient in the fragrance industry! Luckily, no sperm whales were harmed in the making of this perfume. This is a very strong, spicy fragrance, and it isn’t really my jam.  It may be my body chemistry that is affecting my opinion—according to the reviews of this other people find it to be clean, lightweight, and citrusy. This does last as throughout the day, which is important considering the full-size version of this is $135.

The Verdict: I had a lot of fun trying everything out with this kit! I thought a good array of scents were included to appeal to a broad variety of people, and I discovered some new favorites in the TOCCA Cleopatra and Clean Smoked Vetiver. All of these sizes are big enough that I should be set with perfume for a while to come, and I am happy that I will be able to choose a different scent depending on my mood. My only complaint is the value—Birchbox promised a $90 value, and by my math, the estimated value comes out to $69.49. I still think this kit is a good value, but it is frustrating that Birchbox consistently over-promises on the values of their discovery kits. I still definitely recommend this kit if you enjoy trying out new fragrances, just be aware that it is not quite at that $90 value mark.
