Luxe Box Summer 2018 Review

Skin&Co Truffle Therapy Face Gommage back of Skin&Co Truffle Therapy Face Gommage

Skin & Co Roma Truffle Therapy Face Gommage, 1 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $5.13 (Buy a 5.07 oz tube for $26.00)

I quite like this exfoliator! It has a creamy base with ground apricot kernel as the grit that will polish away any dry skin that is hiding your glow. It made my face feel nice and soft and didn't strip away too much moisture. It smells really nice too! Full size is always nice, but this travel size is perfect to toss in my dopp kit before heading out of town.

Delectable Body Butter Cream in triple citrus blend back of Delectable Body Butter Cream in triple citrus blend

Cake Beauty Delectable Body Butter Cream in Triple Citrus Blend, 1 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $2.50 (Buy a 6 oz. tub for $15.00)

This brand was in the last Luxe Box and I ended up liking it quite a bit. This time they've sent a body butter that is whipped and a bit thicker than your average hand cream. Like the offering last quarter, this triple citrus scent smells really nice and fades into a more subtle smell. I will say that this one is a little on the greasy side, so I won't be using it on my hands, but more on my body after a shower. This is a bit more intensive so it'll come in handy in the Fall.

Nude By Nature Perfecting Primer back of Nude By Nature Perfecting Primer

Nude By Nature Perfecting Primer, 0.5 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $15.95 (Buy 1 oz. for $31.90)

I dabbled in primers for only a short while before abandoning them for a BB cream more recently. This primer is actually different than the others I have used in that it doesn't really have a silky soft finish. It goes on like a lotion and although it smells nice and leaves a matte finish, it's not as velvety as I would like. Into the donation box, you go!

Mirabella Chroma Eyeshadow Palette with box closed Mirabella Chroma Eyeshadow Palette bottom of Mirabella Chroma Eyeshadow Palette opened Mirabella Chroma Eyeshadow Palette Mirabella Chroma Eyeshadow Palette swatches

Mirabella Chroma Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $24.50

Mirabella is no stranger to subscription boxes so I've seen some of their products before. This petite but plentiful palette delivers seven different shades for your lids that are harmoniously pleasing. As you can tell, some are subtle and some have more of a bold punch so there's a lot to play around with. I'm so torn with eyeshadow because although I want to keep my makeup routine simple, eyeshadow brings so much to the table for a complete look. I decided to use "eminence" (the dark plum color at the bottom of the swatches) on my lids this morning and then blend it into "washed" (third from the bottom) on my brow bone to give my eyes a bit of a boost. I really loved the results and Emily even complimented my eyeshadow game this morning. Win! Perhaps soon I will build up to using that top color, "goddess" because it's so packed with glittery pigment!

Smashbox Super Fan Mascara Smashbox Super Fan Mascara with wand

Smashbox Super Fan Mascara, 5ml trial size - Estimated Retail Value $9.50 (Buy the 10ml full size for $19.00)

I was just stating how I love getting mascara in sub boxes in another beauty box review and I stand by that. I don't recall trying Smashbox mascara before, so when I saw this trial size version of Super Fan, I was stoked. As Liz has mentioned before, it's also hard for me to use up a full-size product before losing it, growing tired of it, etc, so these trial sizes really have a similar value to me personally. The wand has short plastic bristles that are easy to control and really coat my lashes smoothly. Very impressed!

Benefit BadGal Bang! Mascara with box back of Benefit BadGal Bang! Mascara box Benefit BadGal Bang! Mascara with wand

Benefit BADgal Bang! Mascara, full size - Retail Value $24.00

Ask and you shall receive! This is the second mascara of the box which is a little strange. I do love mascara, but I also would have loved to see a different product in this box instead of two mascaras. Ah well. This is where I start becoming a makeup hoarder because there's no way I can use as many as I have right now, but darn it if I don't wanna try! This one is a full-size product AND from a beauty brand I know! Score! I've seen Benefit in Luxe Box before so it's a pleasure to see it again. The packaging for this one is a bit "punk" with its studded top and matte black finish. The wand here is similar to the Smashbox one but has a more tapered shape instead of a rounded one. I think I prefer a wand like this to a more fibrous one because again, it delivers the product really smoothly and cuts down on clumps. My lashes looked fuller and longer after a few swipes.

Pretty Woman Nail Polish in So Minaj bottom of Pretty Woman Nail Polish in So Minaj Pretty Woman Nail Polish in So Minaj on nails

Pretty Woman Nail Polish in So Minaj - Estimated Retail Value $7.99

Although I couldn't find this exact color on their website, this beautiful silvery pink looks like it belong in the "chromes" collection, so I am taking a guess on the value. I am simply mesmerized by this color! Full disclosure- I've been getting gel color at the nail salon now so this color is over by light grey talons, but you can still see how metallic this is reading. I just love how glossy and chrome-like this color looks and I am a huge fan of pink nails, so this is really up my alley.

Verdict: Luxe Box's Summer box didn't really feel summer-specific to me (I would expect some SPF) but I still really enjoyed what I received. I'll get a lot of use out of the mascaras, exfoliator, and body butter cream, but the primer will be donated or passed to a friend. I'm on the fence about keeping the shadow palette because I prefer more neutral tones, but it will do until another one comes my way. Same goes for the nail polish- I love it, but since I've been getting gel polish, I may pass it on. The cost of this box was $26.00 and I received three full-size products and four trial-size for a total of seven makeup and skincare products that have an estimated retail value of $89.57.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It looks like you will receive the Fall box, which ships September 15th. They do have an "Editor's Box" that they offer in between seasons though, so it ships right away before the next available season. It sounds like if Summer isn't sold out, you may receive it by choosing the "Editor's Box" option.

Value Breakdown: At $26.00 for this box, here's what you're paying per item:

  • Exfoliator: $1.49
  • Body Butter: $0.73
  • Primer: $4.63
  • Eyeshadow Palette: $7.11
  • Trial-size Mascara: $2.76
  • Full-size Mascara: $6.97
  • Nail Polish: $2.32

I’m actually really impressed by this box since the Benefit mascara is a pretty new product (came out in Feb), and a full-sized tube is almost worth the cost of the box. I like that nail color too!

It’s a shame you can’t still get this box, because I like it a lot.

Summer is definitely gone, but you would get their “Editor’s Box” right away to tide you over until the Fall box ships!

Oh gosh, it looks like I totally forgot to update that part at the end! Looking more closely, there is an option to subscribe to their “Editor’s Box” in between seasons and if they have the Summer leftover, you may receive it right away before the Fall one ships in Sept. I’m going to check in with them and I’ll get back to you!

Cake cream is sooo greasy and heavy –
Good for really dry skin. Not really a summertime item, but it is a Canadian company – and it was snowing in Newfoundland a couple of days ago! 😉

Topbox and Luxebox keep overloading us with Cake and Nude by Nature. I stick to curated boxes for this reason. I already have enough mascara to let a lifetime, and sending two is weird!

I have the full size tub of that cake beauty body butter (got the heavy cream in an ipsy bag and went a little nuts on their website, oops) it is SO thick I can only imagine how hard it is to squeeze out of that little tube!

I think I got two, maaaaybe three, uses out of that tube.

What BB cream do you use, Marne? I’m still looking for one that I like.

Hey Michelle!

I’ve been using the “fair to light” Dr. Jart BB Dis-A-Pore Beauty Balm (http://bit.ly/2KvuNAF) for a couple of months now and am really liking it. I don’t need (or want) too much coverage so I went for this instead of a foundation and as a bonus, it has 30 SPF in it.
Let me know what you think if you end up trying it!
