GiftLit June 2018 Review

Before receiving my books, I received a card in the mail from GiftLit that welcomed me and provided my gift code. One thing I really like about this service is that you always have the option to go online and swap out any of the books you’re scheduled to receive. This is great to ensure that recipients get books that they really want and don’t end up with any books that they already have or are not interested in. They also allow you to return any book that is shipped to you within 30 days.

My book came wrapped in this bright, colorful paper. This is an option that costs an extra $3/month. It’s nice that they have this option, but when you’re paying for a gift subscription, I feel like this is one of those things that should already be included.

Penguin and Pinecone: A Friendship Story by Salina Yoon

Penguin and Pinecone: A Friendship Story by Salina Yoon - Retail Value $14.99 (Found here for $13.47)

My kids and I have never read any of these Penguin books although I’ve seen the series before. This book was a cute story about a penguin who befriends a pinecone. The story is simply written with sweet illustrations of Penguin and Pinecone wrapped in matching scarves. They play and have fun together until Penguin realizes that Pinecone needs to go back to his home where it’s warmer. He takes Pinecone home and leaves him there, but comes back to visit hoping that Pinecone has grown bigger and stronger which he has, as he is now a tree. They play together once more until Penguin has to leave for home and the story leaves you with a good message about friendship and love.

I really enjoyed this one and I think the kids did too. I’d definitely like to read more books from this Penguin series.

Merry Makers Penguin Stuffed Animal - Retail Value $15.00 (found here for $10.90)

The Cuddle Collection is such a great idea for my kids who are 2 and 3. It definitely engages them more in the story when they get to hold one of the characters in their arms! Plus this Penguin stuffed animal is so soft and plush. So far all of the stuffed animals we’ve received have looked exactly like the characters which is so fun to us!

Verdict: The total value of the book and stuffed animal was $29.99. The cost of GiftLit is $33.41 per month ($172.46 for 6 months + $28 shipping). This was another cute book and adorable little penguin plush, but the value just isn’t quite there, especially when you take into account the sale prices. It seems like this box just needs something else to make it feel a little more special and unique.

This subscription service does offer a lot of different books and various collections, so the value could change a lot depending on your choices and even vary from month to month. I do think this is a great gift for a book lover since you really can’t go wrong with them being able to choose their own books if they want to, but it just depends on what your budget is.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you can order this collection and customize it so that you receive the same book.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

This is a sweet subscription. Right now libraries across the U.S. are doing their children’s summer reading programs. They have options for little ones to, since reading to your children count as participation. It is a great way to encourage a life long love of reading.
