Yumble is a meal delivery service that sends prepared, healthy kids meals along with free activities and collectibles.

Yumble offers a variety of meal plans per week that include lunches, dinners, and/or snacks. You can choose between 6 meals (for 1 kid) for $47.94 per week, 12 meals (for 1-2 kids) for $89.88 per week or 24 meals (for 2-3 kids) for $167.76 per week and delivery is free. They offer specific meals that change weekly and you can either customize your meal plan or have them select items for you. (They send you an email reminder which is very helpful for forgetful parents like me!). All meals are always pre-cooked and require minimal effort and maybe some reheating! The subscription is very flexible: you can skip a week, pause your subscription or cancel at any time or make changes up to a certain point before your delivery.

Yumble Kids Meal Delivery Box May 2018 Review

The box included 2 large ice packs that work very well to keep the inside of the box cool. These can be reused or they can be thawed and recycled once you dispose of the gel inside. The packing material you see around the edges is not recyclable, but it is made from recycled materials and their FAQs section recommends that it be used for crafts. The trays that they serve the food in are safe to use in both oven and microwave and are degradable.

All of the meals come in these cardboard wraps with a peekaboo window telling you what’s inside. Normally, they have cute colorful characters on them and open up to reveal a mask that kids can color. This time, they were just plain white so I’m not sure if they discontinued this or just had a printing issue this month.

This is the Weekly Fun Pack with free activities and collectibles such as coloring sheets, trading cards and “caught you being good” coins.  In your first box, you are supposed to receive a Welcome Pack to get you started which included this chart that your kids can fill out and send in a picture of for a prize. From the Yumble Kids site:

In addition to a weeks worth of delicious meals, upon subscribing to Yumble, all customers are sent a welcome pack that includes some fun things for the kids and subscription guide for the parents. Parents can send us a picture of their children with their completely filled in charts in order to receive a prize! For every subsequent delivery, children receive collectible coins that may be traded in for really fun prizes.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much info about how to redeem prizes on the website, and since it took me two deliveries and a separate mailing to receive my own welcome pack, I haven’t even had a chance to dive into this aspect of the service yet.

Included in our weekly fun pack was this helpful sheet on heating tips for your meals.

Each week you have the option to either select your own meals or let them select for you. I opted to pick my meals so that I could try some different meals than last time. The inner containers all have the nutrition labels on top with the use by date and preparation instructions. The use by dates are usually well after your delivery date which I really appreciate because it means I can spread the meals over two weeks if I need to and use them as last-minute meals.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner - grilled chicken strips served with honey glazed carrots and jasmine rice

330 calories per serving, 14 grams of fat, 6  grams of sugar, 15 grams of protein

Prep: Heat tray in the oven for 15 minutes (microwave is an option too!).

The chicken in this meal was juicy and flavorful and my son really enjoyed it. My daughter wouldn’t eat it because of the “stuff” on top, which I think is a good point. These meals are supposed to appeal to kids and putting a big layer of black and green looking seasoning on top is something I know a lot of kids might try to avoid. As for the side, it was a generous portion and the rice and carrots were really good with just a touch of sweetness from the honey. My son wasn’t a fan though.

Gobble Meat Up - turkey kale meatballs served with sweet potato mash and popcorn cauliflower

170 calories per serving, 2 grams of fat, 4 grams of sugar, 18 grams of protein

Prep: Heat tray in the oven for 15 minutes (microwave is an option too!).

The meatballs were good - flavorful and filling, but the dried cranberries inside turned a bit mushy and really stood out. I think if they hadn’t been whole chunks then it wouldn’t have been such a big deal. Both kids ate these, but neither were crazy about the sweet potato mash or cauliflower. The cauliflower tasted like it had a curry seasoning on it, which I thought was a good flavor, but the sweet potatoes were pretty bland even though they had honey in them.

Cheeseburger Empanada - served with loaded mashed potatoes:

450 calories per serving, 31 grams of fat, 2 grams of sugar, 18 grams of protein

Prep: Heat tray in the oven for 15 minutes (microwave is an option too!).

My daughter loves cheeseburgers and I thought this would be a fun meal with it being in its own little pocket. I thought it was good, but unfortunately, it did not taste like a cheeseburger at all and instead was more like a shepherd’s pie flavor with the beef and onion filling. The loaded potatoes were certainly loaded with cheese (which must be why the fat content is so high!) and they were pretty gummy. They really tasted like instant mashed potatoes with tons of cheese to me. I wish this had more of a traditional cheeseburger flavor and maybe that the toppings for the potatoes were on the side. It would have made it much more kid-friendly.

Finger Lickin’ Chicken Fingers - crunchy chicken fingers served with hash browns and steamed broccoli

230 calories per serving, 8 grams of fat, 1 gram of sugar, 15  grams of protein.

Prep: Heat tray in the oven for 15 minutes (microwave is an option too!).

The chicken fingers were a hit. They were lightly breaded, thick pieces of white meat chicken that both of my kids enjoyed. They felt healthier than other nuggets I might give my kids and I thought the size was good for little hands, but I think 3 would have been a better portion size. The hashbrowns were okay, but it was like some pieces were a little burnt which affected the flavor. The broccoli was plain, but that’s how my kids like it.

Munch a Lunch - pepperoni and cheese slices served with naan triangles, dried cranberries and avocado chips

530 calories per serving, 28 grams of fat, 5 grams of sugar, 20 grams of protein

Prep: No prep necessary.

My daughter really enjoyed having this for her lunch one day. I know this is easily something  I could put together myself for the kids for lunch, but I wanted to see what their portions would be like for a meal like this. I thought they gave a fair amount of everything included, especially the pepperoni. She ate everything except for the avocado chips which even I thought were a bit strange in texture. Some were hard and almost had a stale taste while others were a bit mushy. The flavor was good, but I think actual chip slices might have had a more consistent texture than these little curls.

Holy Moly Ravioli - cheese ravioli served with dark chocolate pretzels and dried apricots

600 calories per serving, 14 grams of fat, 37 grams of sugar, 18 grams of protein

Prep: Remove pretzels and apricots and heat in the oven for 8-10 minutes.

Wow, 600 calories and 37 grams of fat does not sound like a healthy meal to me. I’m sure it’s not much better when I serve them spaghetti with meat sauce, but this seems like a lot for a “healthy” alternative. The ravioli was in really fun shapes which were great for the kids, but it had no flavor and the sauce was even bland. Plus the sauce was really thick and there wasn’t enough of it for the amount of ravioli they gave us. The pretzels were delicious of course and the apricots were good, too, but these are side dishes I could have easily provided on my own with the same amount of prep.

Verdict: I wasn’t very impressed with our meals this week. We had a handful of things that we liked and the convenience can’t be beaten, but I felt like we wasted a lot more food than we actually ate this week, which really makes me cringe at $7.99 per meal! At least when we pay that for chicken nuggets and french fries, I can guarantee it will get eaten and the calorie and fat content might be close to the Ravioli meal!

The value has been there in previous months because I was pregnant and then adjusting to life with a newborn and needed the convenience, but now that we are settled in a bit more, it doesn’t feel like the value is there for us. It is still incredibly convenient getting delivered to your door, but we are paying $47.94 per box and that’s not worth it for meals that my kids aren’t enjoying at least 80% of the time.

Great review, I try to do convenience foods for my son instead of fast food and keep checking these reviews but the portion sizes and lack of standard bland foods he likes thus far have kept me from ordering. I actually used and loved a suggestion from my mom to order from Schwans for quick fix items and it’s convenient and they offer sales a lot.
