The Holo Hookup May 2018 "Mermaid" Review

Just a heads up, this subscription does not come with an info sheet. All of the value estimates are from what a different holographic polish from the brand would cost. Also, holographic polishes are notoriously difficult to photograph. I did my best, but I promise you that all of the polishes look even better in person:

Cupcake Polish in Mesmerizing, 15 mL

Cupcake Polish in Mesmerizing, 15 mL – Estimated Value $13 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Cupcake Polish here)

This is a sky blue holo with purple and blue iridescent flakies. When the light hits this, you can see a really gorgeous lavender shift in the polish. Mesmerizing indeed!

Formula-wise, this polish applied smoothly in two coats and had plenty of shine without a top coat.

Different Dimension in Mermaid Hair, Don't Care, 15 mL

Different Dimension in Mermaid Hair, Don't Care, 15 mL – Estimated Value $11 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Different Dimension here)

This was the polish that made me realize that consistently, Different Dimension is my favorite polish of the month. Just look at the gorgeous teal holo with multi-color flakies that will have gold sparkle when the light hits it just right. This was the last color I swatched, and I haven't been able to bring myself to take it off yet. This would also pack a punch layered over a black polish for even more depth.

The Application was an easy and smooth two coats, and it probably could have been a one-coater if I wanted it to be.

Glisten & Glow in Mermaid Squad, 15 mL

Glisten & Glow in Mermaid Squad, 15 mL – Estimated Value $12 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Glisten & Glow here)

This is a light blue creme with some linear holo sparkle and gold shimmer thrown in for good measure.

This polish makes me think of sea glass floating in the water, and the application was an effortless two coats.

Anchor & Heart - Let's Be Mermaids, 15 mL

Anchor & Heart - Let's Be Mermaids, 15 mL - Estimated Value $10 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Anchor and Heart here)

This was my first time trying Anchor and Heart, and I was happy with it! This is an orchid pink with small flakies and a holo that leans gold.

The consistency of this polish was perfect, so I was able to get full coverage without it pooling at my cuticles or going on patchy. I like that this provides a bit of contrast to the blues that make up the rest of the polishes, too!

Verdict: As I mentioned in previous reviewsThe Holo Hookup is the only place where you can currently get four different polishes from the four featured brands. If you are used to only the polishes from Ulta or Sallys, you may think the $44 cost of the box is high. I disagree. I only had to pay for one shipping cost instead of four, and I got four exclusive nail polish shades. The Different Dimension Polish in this months box is one of my new all-time favorites, and I loved getting a mermaid themed collection. In terms of how long the color will last, I top all of my nails with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, and I have never had an issue with my holo polishes chipping.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this box is now sold out. Check back here for when the June box (which is themed!) goes on sale.

Value Breakdown: I got four polishes for $44, which means each polish cost $11. Considering the estimated value for three of the four polishes is higher than that, and if I were to purchase a polish from each brand individually I would have four shipping costs, I really think this is a good deal for what you get!

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.
