The Holo Hookup Love Connection February 2018 Review

Just a heads up, this subscription does not come with an info sheet. All of the value estimates are from what a different holographic polish from the brand would cost. Also, holographic polishes are notoriously difficult to photograph. I did my best, but I promise you that all of the polishes look even better in person.

Cupcake Polish in XOXO, 15 mL - Estimated Value $13 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Cupcake Polish here).

XOXO is a silver holo with pink shimmer and iridescent flakies that will look green, purple, or blue depending on how the light hits it. This one is definitely my favorite one out of the bunch because the iridescent flakies really make this polish stand out compared to other silver holos. My only regret is that the flakies did not like to come out when I was photographing the swatches.

This polish is a bit watery in its application, but I only used two coats and no topcoat. Look at that shine!

Different Dimension in Forever, 15 mL - Estimated Value $11 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Different Dimension here).

Forever is a mauvy-pink holo with scattered shimmer. The rainbow sparkle that is what makes holo so great isn't as pronounced in this polish as I prefer it to be, but when the direct sunlight hits it that is when it really shines. I think this would be a good polish to wear to work (if you have a more conservative dress code) because you get a touch of holographic goodness without it being in your face. This looks like the slightly sparklier version of the pink nail polish my mom wore about 6 months out of every year when I was growing up, and I am okay with that.

Consistency wise it was perfect and easy to control, and the swatch shows two coats with no top coat.

Glisten & Glow in Smooches, 15 mL - Estimated Value $12 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Glisten & Glow here).

Smooches is a cherry red holo with holographic microglitter. In my mind, red holographic polishes are definitely less common compared to other colors, so I was excited to see this in the box. I have over 300 bottles of nail polish, but nothing quite like this one.

This was another polish that had a seamlessly smooth application, and the swatch shows two coats and no top coat. Honestly, if you wanted to you could probably get away with one coat.

Beyond The Nail in Wink, 15 mL - Estimated Value $7.93 USD ($10 CAD. This is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Beyond The Nail here)

I had heard of the other three brands from Instagram, but this was the first time I have encountered Beyond The Nail. Purple is one of my favorite colors, so I was excited to see Wink, which is a light purple linear holo. The Holo was strong with this one, and I love it!

The application was smooth, and I used two coats and no top coat for the swatch.

The Holo Hookup February 2018 Nail Art

Since the theme of this box was Love Connection, I thought I would do a Valentine's Day themed nail art look using all of the polishes included. Honestly, I think all four really work together, and really fit the theme. One thing to look out for is that Forever ran a bit when I applied my top coat (Seche Vite), so keep that in mind if using it for nail art.

Verdict: I knew of three of the four brands included in The Holo Hookup before I got this box, and I had been wanting to try them. If you are used to only the polishes from Ulta or Sallys, you may think the $44 cost of the box is high. I disagree. I got a box of four holographic nail polishes, from four different indie nail polish brands. There is nowhere on the internet right now where I could get a polish from each of these brands in one fell swoop, which really adds to the value for me. Holographic polishes are harder to come by in the nail polish world compared to cremes, shimmers, and glitters, so getting four holographic polishes from four different specialty brands really make this box a home run for me. While I know the exclusivity of the polishes adds to the box value as well, I am a bit bummed I will not be able to buy XOXO when mine runs out— it really is a gorgeous, unique polish! In terms of how long the color will last, I top all of my nails with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, and chipping is never an issue I have. I will report back if that changes with any of these!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this box is now sold out. Check back here for when the March box goes on sale.

Value Breakdown: I got four polishes for $44, which means each polish cost $11. Considering the estimated value for each one is higher than that, and if I were to purchase a polish from each brand individually I would have four shipping costs, I really think this is a good deal for what you get!

Hi, Jessica! Thanks for reviewing these! My favorite is the Cupcake polish in XOXO! It looks so pretty. Thank you!

THank you for your thorough review, those polishes are something special Do they chip easily? No matter what I do my nail polish seems to chip within a days time which makes me not want to bother.

I second the suggest to look into your top/base coat combos. Your unique chemistry really does make a difference. I used to maybe get 4 days out of a manicure, but with Zoya’s base coat and Posche (another quick dry top coat like Seche Vite) I can get 6-7 fairly easily.

Hi NYAmicas! My nails are 2+ days with nary a chip in sight. The problem may be the base coat or top coat you use, and not the polishes themselves.

How did you make the hearts? I would love to do something like that for Valentine’s day!

And the rainbow ombre in the other photos??

Hi Michelle. My Valentine’s Day nail art was done using nail vinyls from polishedvino. My other nail art was an ombré using the OPI color paints collection.

Oooh how did you do your other hand??? Looks gorgeous!

Hi Jackie!
I used the OPI color paints collection for the other hand. They’re designed to be like water colors so they ombré really well. These nails were over a silver base
