Tea Box Express April 2018 Review

You can usually expect one tea (sometimes more), one accessory, and one edible item (sometimes more) in this box. Occasionally there will be other tea-themed items as well:

There was a card asking you to share your box contents on social media. This subscription typically does not have an information card with it.

McCrea’s Black Lava Sea Salt Caramels (1.4 oz)

McCrea’s Black Lava Sea Salt Caramels (1.4 oz) – Retail Value $3.95

These are traditional dairy-based caramels and they are delicious. They were not too sticky and the black sea salt crystals provided an interesting contrast both visually and in terms of flavor/texture. I want to join this company’s “caramel of the month club” now…

Cloister Honey Straws, lemon flavor (12 count)

Cloister Honey Straws, lemon flavor (12 count) – Retail Value $6

These are advertised as snacks on the manufacturer’s website but I like to keep them in my desk drawer at work for tea. I get a lot of tea subscriptions and have a few teas I’ve been holding off on consuming in full because they’re too tart. So I have been using these in the tart teas to take off some of the edge. They’re not messy and since they’re not open jars, you don’t have to worry about crystallization. These are lightly lemon-flavored.

Flower Pot Tea Company Bright Chrysanthemum Blooming Floral Tisane (0.17 oz, makes about 4 cups) – Retail Value $8.99

This is a floral herbal tea (tisane) that has some definite greenness to the flavor if that makes sense. Even when consumed hot, it’s a refreshing beverage because of those notes. I think it is really just dried flowers, and I had never thought of having chrysanthemum tea before, but now I am a fan. You can probably get more than four cups out of this if you re-steep the flowers or use a little less at a time than recommended but just leave it in the water longer (it doesn’t get bitter).

This is a super light color but it is actually quite flavored.

Flower Pot Tea Company Powerful Pomegranate Flavored Blooming Tea (1.13 oz, 4 blooms) – Retail Value $8.99

This is a white tea with a little pomegranate flavor to it. It’s a really nice blend that’s more “floral” than “tea,” to be honest. When you unwrap the blooms and put them in hot water, they unfold, as you can see below:

I think I’d been better off doing this in my glass teapot, which is a bit larger, and next time I will surely try that. But hopefully, you get a little sense of the product from these photos.

The tea, itself, is quite light in color, but it is not lacking in flavor. This is too expensive to be an everyday tea, but it is wonderful for a special occasion.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $27.93 for this month’s Tea Box Express. That is slightly under the cost of the box plus shipping, but I am OK with that, and here’s why: (1) I liked everything a lot, (2) all the brands were new to me except the honey and I don’t know how I ever would’ve discovered these items otherwise, (3) all the producers were pretty small and if you’d bought everything alone, you’d likely have had to pay shipping as well. Plus, over time the value of this box averages out.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  No, your subscription would start with the June box. From Tea Box Express:
